THE ASTROS CHEATED. WHAT NOW?The Astros were caught stealing signs during the 2017 and 2018 playoffs. What started first as afeel-good story of an underdogteam losing its way into high draft picksand achieving success with home-growntalent has turned into a cheating scandalthat is unprecedented in its magnitudeand severity. The punishments have beenhefty and it seems like the entire baseballcommunity has weighed in with an opinionor testimony about the different waysthe Astros have cheated.First, it started with an accusation. A fewplayers came forward and claimed thatthe Astros possessed a complex systemto steal signs at home and that they hadutilized it between the 2016 and 2019 MLBseasons. This system involved a monitorthat displayed a live broadcast of the game,which allowed a personnel member in theAstros’ dugout to see the opposing team’scatcher’s hand signals, which determinedwhat pitch the pitcher was gonna throw,and relay it by banging on a trash can andalerting the batter as to what pitch wascoming. The person watching the monitorcould bang the trash can and effectivelyallow the batter to predict what pitch wascoming.These accusations were further backedup by an interview with former White Soxpitcher Danny Farquhar, who providedthe exact time and date for when he realizedthe Astros were stealing signs. Surelyenough, baseball analyst Jomboy Mediafound video footage of the pitch sequenceFarquhar was talking about and was ableto hear trash cans banging so loud theywere picked up by on-field microphones.What followed was an incredible seriesof events, wherein multiple eyewitnessaccounts and evidence helped paint thepicture of an incredibly complex cheatingsystem that was created with the helpof multiple Astros players and front officepersonnel. Many of the Astros’ starplayers were implicated, but they eitherdenied the accusations or refrained completelyfrom responding.The punishments were swift and harsh.The Astros were fined $5 million, themaximum amount allowed for a team tobe fined for, and they had all of their draftpicks taken away for the 2020 and 2021season. Mets manager Carlos Beltran andRed Sox manager Alex Cora were firedfrom their positions after it was revealedthat they masterminded the cheatingscheme in 2017 while they were playingand coaching for the Astros respectively.Additionally, manager AJ Hinch and generalmanager Jeff Luhnow were suspendedfor a year due to their active role in thecheating scheme. Additionally, the RedSox, who won a world series with Cora astheir manager in 2018, were subject to anofficial investigation by the commissioner’soffice on top of the cheating accusationsthey were already subject to.This scandal has thrown the results ofevery world series from 2017 to 2019 intoquestion. The Los Angeles Dodgers, wholost the 2017 and 2018 World Series to theAstros and Red Sox respectively, havebeen actively campaigning to promoteharsher punishments on both teams.Meanwhile, the Washington Nationals,who beat the Astros in the World Seriesin 2019, have asked for an investigation ontheir run.kartik mukalla | staff writer
