Edge Hill University in Ormskirk has a
first-rate entertainments calendar.
On the way to see comedian James Acaster at the Uni’s
Arts Centre for his ‘Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999’
tour, I shared with a friend how I liked the fact that
the JA he’s funny without having to resort to swearing.
Fast forward to the gig, on strutted JA, sporting bold
mirrored Aviator shades and lurid jacket, spewing
F-words as if all his life of clean comedy had been
saving up for this moment! He revealed later this was
just a persona, a way of him mocking ‘edgy comedians’,
and not allowing the crowd to get too comfortable.
It worked. I’m still a fan.
