ISLAND WALKSThe Forts WalkPhoto Tourism and Events QueenslandHAWKINGS POINTDistance: 1.2km return Time: 1 hour Grade: easyFrom the eastern end of Picnic Street in Picnic Bay, atrack winds to the top of a large boulder, affordingviews over the island to Nelly and Geoffrey bays andback towards Townsville.PICNIC BAY TO WEST POINTDistance: 16km return Time: 5 hours Grade: easyThis walk follows an unsealed road that links the bayson the western side of the island. The track startsat Yule Street near the golf course, passing a tidalwetland, mangroves, paperbark swamps and savannagrasslands.NELLY BAY TO ARCADIA BAYDistance: 5km one wayTime: 2.5 hours Grade: moderateFrom the end of Mandalay Avenue in Nelly Bay, this walkpasses through a vine-thicket pocket, climbs graduallyto the saddle between Nelly and Horseshoe bays andthen follows a ridge with views over Horseshoe Bay. Thetrack then branches, with one track leading to ArcadiaBay and the other to Horseshoe Bay Road, where youcan continue on to other tracks. A 400m return sidetrackto the Sphinx lookout branches from the main track,750m from Arcadia.THE FORTS WALKDistance: 4km returnTime: 1.5 hours Grade: moderateOne of the most popular tracks on the island, theForts walk leads to historic WWII fortifications andinfrastructure. Lookouts along the way afford excellentviews to the Palm Island Group in the north and BowlingGreen Bay National Park in the south. Koalas are oftenseen in trees along the track. The walk culminates in 360degree views from the top of the fortifications. Startingon Horseshoe Bay Road at the turn-off to Radical Bay,the track ascends, sometimes steeply, to follow a ridgebehind the bays before arriving at the ruins of the Fortscomplex operated during World War II.ARTHUR, FLORENCE AND RADICAL BAYSDistance: 1.4km - 6km returnTime: 30mins - 2 hours returnStarting from the Forts carpark, an easy track leadsdown to these undeveloped bays, which provideexcellent swimming and snorkelling.HORSESHOE BAY LAGOONDistance: 200m return Time: 15minsHorseshoe Bay Lagoon is a popular area forbirdwatching. The track begins on Horseshoe Bay Road,about 200m from the beach, and leads to a lagoonwhere a number of waterbirds can be seen.HORSESHOE BAY TO BALDING & RADICAL BAYSDistance: 3.4km returnTime: 60 mins return Grade: moderateThe track begins at the eastern end of Horseshoe Baybeach and climbs through a steep gully of closed forestto an open eucalypt ridge. One branch of the trackleads down to the secluded Balding Bay (popular with‘sun lovers’) and the other continues onto Radical Baynorth facing so it’s cool in summer and warm in winter.Both bays offer excellent swimming opportunities. FromRadical you can continue on along the ungraded roadto end up at the Forts carpark.FOR THE FIT AND ADVENTUROUSTime: A few hours (depends on drink and rest stops)Take in a day of walking from Nelly Bay to HorseshoeBay and discover the entire beauty of the Island. Stopat the many views and see wildlife along the way,including rock wallabies, koalas and an abundance ofbirdlife. All tracks join at various points with distanceswell marked. Be prepared for some uphill climbs, theviews are rewarding. Once at Horseshoe Bay, rewardyourself with a cold refreshing drink, a gelato or coffeewhile waiting for the bus for the return trip.SAFETY TIPSTo help protect the environment, and to makeyour stay more enjoyable: Take your time, stopoften for rest breaks. On hot days, you can sufferheat exhaustion. Try to avoid the heat of themidday sun.Stay on track and take care on uneven or loosesurfaces. Take care around cliffs, steep slopesand rock faces along the tracks and at lookouts.Always carry plenty of drinking water. Wearsunscreen and a hat. Wear sturdy footwear, notthongs.
