Unfortunately, even with all the available information, the historians
could not always ascertain specific facts. The full names of commanders and
the exact dates they assumed command, for example, were often not to be
found. To determine a particular fact from fragmentary and sometimes
conflicting evidence, in these circumstances, required the historian’s best
