What is a plant?
A plant is a living thing. Plants
can be many different shapes,
colours and sizes. They live in
many different places. Trees,
grass, shrubs, bushes, herbs,
ferns and moss are all plants.
Plants cannot move from the
place they are growing.
What parts does a plant have?
Plants have many different parts. The main parts are roots, stem or
trunk, leaves, flowers and branches. Flowers have small parts called
petals. Buds are small knobby parts of a plant that grow into a flower, a
leaf or both. Many plants start growing from a seed or bulb. The parts of
a plant all have a job to do.
What jobs do the parts of a plant have?
Roots hold the plant in the soil so it will not fall over. They suck up water
and nutrients for the plant like a straw. Roots can store extra food for
later.
Stems hold up the plant. They act like pipes to carry
water and nutrients around the plant. Stems can bend or
be stiff and hard like a tree trunk.
Leaves are the place where food is made. Leaves give off
oxygen into the air. They take carbon dioxide from the air,
and water and nutrients from the soil, and change them
into food.

Flowers are the part of the plant that make the seeds.
Some flowers grow into fruit. There are seeds inside fruit.
Flower petals and the smell of flowers attract bees and
insects. Insects and bees spread pollen that make new
seeds.
Seeds grow into new plants.
