German GemsBruce WrightAs German manpower started to run low late in WWII, theGerman military turned to the inhabitants of their occupiedterritories. In 1943, a Danish volunteer army corps was formedwith the eventual name of the Schalburg Corps, after ChristianFrederik von Schalburg, commander of the Free CorpsDenmark, who was killed in action in the Demiansk Pocketon the Eastern Front in 1942.Because his death preceded theformation of the unit, von Schalburg never had any interactionwith the unit bearing his name. Due to a basic lack of trust innon-German recruits, the Schalburg Corps was used to protectrailroads and crossroads from partisan sabotage, rather thanserve in the front lines. In July 1944, it was incorporated intothe SS as a training battalion. Two stamps honoring the DanishLegion with the picture of von Schalburg were printed in 1944in vertical se-tenant pairs (Michel IV-V), with and without a 50Øre value. While the two stamps, singly or in pairs, are fairlycommon, this complete sheet is believed to be unique.April 2020 119
