help is much appreciated.
Do keep letting us know about the excellent services that
you have used lately. Don’t forget we drop off some
Messengers at the Melton Museum and the library should
you ever need an extra directory. I am always happy to

Cross-train to achieve your sporting goals
Whatever your sport or training goals
mixing it up with different activities can
pay dividends in terms of overall fitness,
strength, speed and endurance, writes
Michael Cooke.
My life has always been full of running but age
and injury have a habit of catching up with you
sooner or later, so rather belatedly I’m
discovering the benefits of
cross training, dynamic
stretching and sports
massage to keep body (and
soul) together. Movement is
improvement as the saying
goes.
By cross-training we
generally mean aerobic
activities which complement
your training programme
such as swimming, cycling,
rowing, weight training and
kettlebells. You’ll add a bit
of variety and help rectify some muscle
imbalances to make your whole body stronger,
able to withstand greater stresses and strains.
It’s a great way to avoid boredom and reduces
the risk of injury, too, in particular the tendency
to succumb to the same kind of problem time
and again. Focusing on other parts of your
body has other benefits, too, helping you to
tone up and stay trim.
Adding a stretch class, pilates or yoga to your
weekly routine will improve your flexibility and
core strength and your body will perform more
efficiently as a result.
Think of it as active recovery, prompting your
body to repair any muscle damage and
replenish glycogen. You are stimulating blood
flow to tired muscles, flushing out any lingering
toxins and getting fitter. Add some rest and a
good night’s sleep and you’ll feel 10 years
younger and ready for the next new challenge.
Another way to keep in top top shape is to
utilise sports massage. Deep tissue massage
techniques reduce muscular tension,
discomfort and soreness. It warms the muscles
up to increase local blood
circulation and aid the muscle
repair and healing process.
It can play a vital role in
maintaining your body’s
equilibrium and increase range
of motion and performance. It
will also give you a better
understanding of your own
biomechanics and areas of
weakness to work on.
All you need to start with is an
exercise mat and a foam or massage roller.
There is a lot of expert help out there, be they
coaches, instructors or sports massage
therapists, and once you have grasped it you
can develop your own cross-training and active
recovery plan. And where it will lead you is the
exciting part!

A new Kid on the Block
Yoof is a new children's entertainment centre
for 5-17 year olds found on Snow Hill in
Melton. It was set up by a local parents,
Christine and Simon, in response to the bad
press Melton received on the BBC as one of the
worst places in the country for kids to grow up
in. “We are passionate that the kids of Melton
have a safe and central location in town where
they can socialise and have fun. We don’t want
anyone knocking Melton we have two children
ourselves – it’s a great place to bring up kids.”
Yoof opened last November. It provides a great
range of fun, social activities for children and
teenagers with reasonably priced snacks and
refreshments available on site too.
It is hoped parents will make use of the facility to
drop kids off if they want to go shopping or go
out at the weekend. (NB 5-9 year olds must be
supervised) Opening hours are extended during
school holidays, providing parents somewhere
to send their kids while they work.
Tournaments run at the weekend in table tennis,
pool, basketball, football, etc. There are also
discos arranged for different age groups.
Please follow them on Facebook @ yoofltd
Or Instagram @ yoof.ltd for updates.

The aptly named
floral gift shop, Mrs
Leaf and Mrs Petal,
opened last
October. For the
last 14 years
owners Jackie and Simone have owned the
horticultural business Natural Gardeners
where they designed, built and maintained
private gardens throughout the East Midlands.
“It was a privilege to work for our regular
clientele. However, with the unavoidable event
of maturing years we had to make a change,
thus we decided to embrace the new
challenge of a flower and gift shop.”
Jackie and Simone have over 45 years
experience between them within the
horticultural industry. Simone has worked in
large commercial plant nurseries through to
award winning independent garden centres.
Jackie qualified at Rease Heath College as a
landscape designer some 20 years ago, and
also has experience in sports turf and
woodland management. She has also
managed specialist plant centres before
setting up Natural Gardeners.

“We are continuing to offer horticultural advice
from planting containers to full blown garden
and border design. We have a small selection
of houseplants and when in season there will
be a choice of herbaceous perennials.”
The shop offers Maileg soft toys and Nutscene
gardening sundries. There is a selection of
Weaver Green throws, blankets and bags
which are made from recycled plastic bottles.
A greeting card selection is from Nottingham
based company, The Art File, together with
recycled wrapping paper from Re-wrapped.
Fresh cut flowers arrive at least twice weekly
including when possible British grown
seasonal flowers. Flowers can be purchased
by the stem or can be arranged from standard
hand tied arrangements to Hat Box
presentations. Flower arrangements are all
bespoke and custom made to customers’
preferences and great pride is taken in making
customers feel part of the process.
They also offer a unique town delivery service
using their re-conditioned post office bike to
help cut down on their carbon footprint.
Appointments and consultations can be made
at the shop or at your home or office.

How to hedge - by Pippa Greenwood
Hedges can be smart or informal, neat and
compact or thick and sturdy, evergreen or
deciduous and can even be flowering - and
now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge.
First prepare the area by forking
the soil over thoroughly and
remove large stones, debris and
pernicious weeds. This also
helps to break up any
compaction and to aerate the
soil, making it a better place for
plant roots. Fork in well-rotted
garden compost, manure or
proprietary compost if the soil is
either very sandy and light or
very heavy with clay, and at the
same time incorporate a complete fertilizer.
Don’t plant right up against an existing fence,
as the plants won’t grow well.
At this time of year you can create a hedge
very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants which
you can plant out immediately. However if you
want to plant a hedge at any other time you
will need container-grown plants. Here you
should water them thoroughly, remove each
plant from its pot and tease out any tightly
packed roots before planting. It is essential to
plant and space the plants correctly, to ensure
the plants establish well. Once out of the pot,
position the plant in the prepared soil at the
same depth as it was in the pot;
for bare-root plants only the roots
should be beneath the soil. Firm
the soil around each so that it is
in good contact with the roots.
Hedging plants should generally
be spaced about 30-45cm apart.
For a thicker or denser hedge,
plant two parallel rows, each with
a 45cm spacing between the
plants, but positioned so that the
planting is staggered like bricks in a wall.
Once the whole hedge is planted, water the
soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around
the roots and so allow the plants to establish.
On windy sites or with larger plants use small,
temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to
stabilise the plants. Keep the hedge well
watered, especially during dry or windy
weather. The first 18 months is the most vital
period.

Some great hedging plants:
Yew - a formal, evergreen hedge.
Thuja - a stunning conifer hedge for year
round colour.
Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good
effect for much of the year. Both purple and
green-leafed forms.
Hornbeam - great as a neatly clipped hedge,
but more prone to mildew than beech.
Cypress – excellent if kept well clipped and
cut back regularly.
Pyracantha - spiny evergreen with pretty
creamy-white flowers and red-orange or
yellow berries.
Privet - the classic town hedge.
Euonymus - evergreen, some variegated
green and cream, others green and yellow.
Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny,
good for wildlife.
Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, with
pretty white flowers followed by sloes – but
can easily get too vigorous!

In an age of information overload in our
Industrialised Western society, it seems that
older voices are neither heeded nor needed.
Sadly, at a time when healthcare advances
are allowing people to live longer and the
world has more wise and experienced senior
citizens than ever before, older
people are having to fight for the
respect they believe is their due.
According to the Oxford
Dictionaries respect is “A feeling of
deep admiration for someone or
something elicited by their abilities,
qualities, or achievements”. But if
older people have lost their status as
guardians of our communal knowledge, can
they demand respect on the grounds of age
and experience alone? Twenty-something
Lifestyle blogger Michael Tawiah expresses
the views of many young people today when
he says: “Respect should be a choice and not
a forced thing ... personally, I’m not going to
respect someone just because they tell me to.”
Angie Jardine, a commentator on the website
Soapboxie.com, believes that young people
can still benefit from listening to the stories of
Respect your elders?
parents and grandparents: “Would we have
learnt anything about how a civilised society
should be run if the survivors of two world
wars and, in particular the Holocaust, had not
told their stories to someone who listened?
There is usually some tantalising nugget of
information in the
reminiscences of old folk from
which something can be
learned about the past and
where we came from.”
Today it’s not just warm words
of wisdom that older people
bring to the table. In 2010 the charity WRVS
estimated that over-65s contributed over
£40bn to the UK economy through taxes,
spending power, volunteering and caring, and
this figure is predicted to reach £77bn by
2030.
In China an “Elderly Rights Law” dictates the
way older people should be treated, while in
East Asia respect for the elderly, fathers and
ancestors is deeply rooted in society.
Maybe there are lessons to be learnt?

Driving Tips - by Ian Betson
The essence of a smooth drive is thinking
ahead. Take in road conditions, terrain, hazards
etc. and use the information to ensure
you are in the correct gear, at the right speed
for the conditions and are anticipating the
actions of other drivers.
Sometimes you have to go slower to go
faster. ‘Driving with the brakes’ is a great
example of this. Use your brakes to stop at
traffic lights, but if you see brake lights come
on ahead of you on the motorway don’t go
straight for the middle pedal. This may
contribute to the ‘pogo’ effect. The first car
may only apply them for two seconds but the
‘pogo’, working its way back down the queue
of bunched-up traffic, means that the driver
ten cars back has braked for five seconds
and slowed to a crawl. The result is everyone
is now going slower than if they had maintained
an adequate gap and just lifted off a
little.
Provided you’ve maintained an adequate gap
between you and the car in front, you have
time to think and apply the brakes gently.

Welcome services for happy caravaners!
Local experienced caravan and motorhome
engineers Jason and Phil have been running a
mobile repair and servicing service for over
ten years. Recently they have decided to set
up a more permanent business base at the
Old Dalby Business Park. As Jason explains,
“ With our new site we can now offer secure
caravan storage to compliment an on site
workshop and a new shop. There really isn’t
anything like this available in the local area
that we know of”
PB Caravans have 200 hard standing spaces
available all year round for both caravans and
motor homes. They are fully insured and approved
by the National Caravan Council.
As caravanning mechanics they are Gas safe
registered and offer both on site routine servicing
and repairs as well as a mobile call out
service where caravans can be worked on
whilst on your own driveway.
“ We can do anything from changing a shower
tray to fitting a motor mover or even installing
solar panels”.
The on site shop is a recent addition. Here you
can buy a whole range of camping and caravanning
equipment and accessories.
Jason and Phil are themselves caravanning
enthusiasts and caravanning is very much a
part of their own lifestyles. You may even have
seen them take their trade stand out to a Kennel
Club meeting or two. Proud of their oldfashioned
values they believe full heartedly in
honesty and integrity.

Book reviews - Books for discussion
The Binding – Bridget Collins
In Emmett Farmer’s world, it’s possible to
forget the pain of your past. All you have to
do is tell your story to a binder, who’ll lock it
away in a book. But as apprentice-binder
Emmett soon discovers, not all stories are
meant to be forgotten. A highly original book
that deftly combines fantasy, historical fiction
and romance into one captivating tale.
The Green Roasting Tin: Vegan and
Vegetarian One Dish Dinners – Rukmini
Iyer
If you’ve been inspired to eat more meat-free
meals, but don’t want to spend hours in the
kitchen, this is a useful reference book to
have on hand. It’s gained numerous positive
reviews in the last two years, and for good
reason. Each of the seventy-five recipes is
designed to make cooking healthy, tasty
meals as easy as possible. In most cases,
each dish takes just ten minutes to prepare.
Recipes include ‘Miso Aubergines with Tofu,
Sesame & Chilli’ and ‘Squash & Gorgonzola
Tart with Figs & Pecans’.
Grandmothers – Salley Vickers
Three different women find their paths
crossing. Wealthy Blanche has developed a
compulsion for shoplifting after being banned
from seeing her grandchildren. Poet Nan is
planning her funeral and isn’t afraid to speak
her mind, but she has a blind spot when it
comes to her grandson. And then finally
there’s shy Minna, who’s in danger of losing
the only person she really cares about. A
beautiful, quiet book that looks at family life in
all its complexities.
Big Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister – Jung
Chang
While it’s a bit heavy going in parts, Big
Sister, Little Sister, Red Sister is a fascinating
insight into three of the most powerful women
in Chinese history. Ching-ling, wife of Sun
Yat-sen, became Mao’s vice-chair. It placed
her in direct opposition to her two sisters –
May-ling (Madame Chiang Kai-shek), who
was the first lady of Nationalist China, and Eiling,
Chiang’s unofficial main adviser and one
of China’s wealthiest citizens.
Our Planet: The One Place We Call Home –
Matt Whyman and Richard Jones
This children’s companion to last year’s
Netflix hit is sure to prove popular with young
nature buffs. Stunning photography and
illustrations accompany short, easily
digestible paragraphs of text. Our Planet
educates and inspires in equal measure. As
Sir David Attenborough says, ‘You will be
among the next characters who can, if they
wish, tell the most extraordinary story of all –
how human beings in the twenty-first century
came to their senses and started to protect
Planet Earth.’
The Book of Echoes – Rosanna Amaka
A young black man struggles to come to
terms with a devastating tragedy in 1980s
England. Meanwhile, a girl in Nigeria tries to
build a better life for herself against the odds.
As the pair resist following the paths laid out
for them, they’re watched over by the ghost of
a murdered woman. A gripping, thoughtprovoking
debut novel.

The seeds for the earliest computers were
sown at the beginning of the nineteenth
century.
It is Charles Babbage
who is usually credited
with the invention of the
computer.
Born in 1791, he
conceived a steamdriven
programmable
engine able to work out
mathematical problems.
Sadly Babbage never
Tech - the birth of the computer
Charles Babbage’s
Difference Engine No 1.
lived to see his computer built, but amongst
his many drawings and plans he left behind
such a detailed technical design for
‘Difference Engine No. 2’ that the Science
Museum’s curator decided to undertake the
project in the 1980s. Finished in 2002, it
works accurately, produces printouts, and
weighs five tons.
During the late 1880s population growth in
the United States meant that the government
was struggling to calculate its census
figures. So in 1890 Herman Hollerith
designed a punch card system to automate
the task. He saved the government $5 million
and in the process established the company
that went on to become IBM.
Alan Turing is often described as the father
of modern computers. In 1936 he invented
the concept of the ‘Turing Machine’, capable
of universal calculation. Theoretically the
machine had limitless memory, could read
data, write results, and store a program of
instructions just like a modern computer.
Turing’s computer was not built , although
his contribution to the Bombe which broke
the Germans’ Enigma Code during World
War II is well-known.
After several electro-mechanical versions,
between 1943 and 1944 two American
professors, John Mauchly and J. Presper
Eckert, constructed the first electronic
computer. It was 1,000 times faster than any
previously, measured 800 square feet and
had 18,000 vacuum tubes. From this came
UNIVAC, the first commercial computer
launched in 1946.
The first computer languages were COBOL,
invented by Grace Hopper in 1953 and
FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslation),
developed by a team of programmers at
IBM. Written in a programming language
called C, the UNIX operating system was
useable across multiple platforms. It
subsequently became the standard for
mainframe computers.
The 1960s saw the development of the
computer mouse, graphical user interface
and the invention of the floppy disk, paving
the way for the availability of PCs to the
general public. Until then computers had only
been used by the military, government and
commercial companies.
Self-confessed computer geeks Paul Allen
and Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 and
two years later the two Steves – Jobs and
Wozniak – launched Apple Computers.
Surprisingly the first IBM PC, running on MS
DOS, wasn’t unveiled until 1981 while Apple
was busy developing its longstanding rival,
the Mackintosh.
In the last twenty years computer technology
has smashed through the glass ceiling with
the invention of the Internet and networking
using Wi-Fi and broadband. I wonder if
Charles Babbage would have believed that a
computer that once filled a whole room now
fits in our pockets.

Ground rent issues
Over recent months there has been
increased interest and increased press
coverage in relation to ground rents.
Ground rents are common and represent the
annual amount payable under the term of a
lease by way of rent. They can vary
significantly from a peppercorn (effectively zero
rent) to far more substantial amounts. It is not
uncommon for the lease to provide for the rent
to increase and this is the point of concern.
Many leases begin with a ground rent that
starts at a fairly innocuous amount, for example
£200.00 per annum. The lease, however, may
well provide for the rent to increase by an
arbitrary multiplier, in some instances doubling
every 10 years. This may not seem
unreasonable when given a cursory look. If,
however, the lease were for 125 years the rent
in the last 5 years would, in fact, be
£819,200.00 per annum. This would not be
acceptable to a majority of buyers and
mortgage companies. In such circumstances
the only option may be to have the lease varied
to reduce the rent but this may well involve the
payment of a premium to the freeholder as well
as the Freeholder's legal fees.
This is, obviously, a fairly dramatic example but
many lenders will not accept a lease where the
rent arbitrarily doubles or where the potential
rent increases are deemed to be unreasonable
and will not accept what they deem to be
unreasonable multipliers (e.g. the doubling of
rent every 10 years).
In the long term it is hoped that legislation will
be introduced to limit ground rents. New leases
are now far more wary of what is acceptable in
terms of ground rent and leases that are
extended are issued with a ground rent of a
peppercorn as long as you have owned the
property for 2 years.
For those leases already in existence,
however, the ideal solution would be for the
Freeholder to agree to vary (change) the lease
so as to have compliant ground rent provisions.
This, however, will often result in payments and
additional legal fees on the part of the current
owner.

Local tax and accountancy
specialist Lloyd Stubbs gives
some advice on financial matters
to small businesses.
The amendment to your tax return may be in
the form of a letter detailing the omissions, an
amended return, an extra supplementary page
that shows the relevant source of income, or
an amended supplementary page of one
originally submitted with the return.
Can I amend my Income Tax Return
Q: I rushed the submission of my tax
return in January, and realised that I
missed off the tax return the interest I
received from my bank accounts and
dividends received from some
investments during the 2018/19 tax year.
Can I revise my tax return and will I incur
any fines for doing this?
A: Just as the Revenue has the right to repair
an obvious error or mistake on a return, the
taxpayer has the right to amend it within 12
months of the filing date for the tax return,
which in the majority of cases is the following
31 January.
The Revenue will normally accept an
amendment to a return or self-assessment,
whether it is notified by the taxpayer or by their
agent. However, you must ensure the
amendment is supplied in writing.
No penalties for late filing will be applicable,
but you need to be aware that if the
amendment results in additional tax to pay you
will be charged interest from the due date of
payment, which in your case was 31 January
2020, and may be liable to a 5% surcharge if
this is not paid by the agreed date.

Imagine What Your Life Would Be Like If …
…You felt calm, balanced and connected
all the time. If you always treated yourself
with compassion and understanding, safe
in the knowledge that in any given moment
you know you are doing the best you can.
And you know that you are ok, exactly as
you are. And you feel you are living your
best, happiest, most successful, fulfilling
and meaningful life possible.
Imagine if all that was true for
you….
What would your life be like?
If you think this kind of life isn’t
possible think again.
Successful people who live
successful lives have consciously decided to
regularly and consistently follow Success
Secrets that let them live life in this way. And
you can do so too.
Are you your own worst critic? What do you
say to yourself if things never go to plan?
Learning to treat yourself with loving kindness
is vital to living a happy life, so one of the
biggest gifts you can give yourself is selfforgiveness.
You may have moments in your life when you
get flashbacks about situations from the past,
times when you may have said or done certain
things or behaved in a certain way that now,
with the benefit of age, wisdom and hindsight,
you wish you had done differently?
When this happens you probably invest time
and energy replaying it, wishing things had
played out differently and maybe thinking
about an alternative ending that you wish had
happened instead? A flashback can bring up
feelings of shame, remorse or regret that
really impact on you today, even though it
happened some time ago.
Self-forgiveness allows you to stop this pattern
before it even gets started, so that you can
stop carrying the emotional baggage around
with you and simply let it melt it away.
When you can look back at your younger self
with compassion and forgiveness for whatever
you feel you got wrong, you instantly release
yourself from having to carry the burden any
more. You make peace with that memory and
take the charge out of it, so it can never affect
you again.
We all carry emotional baggage around with
us. But what successful people do is
recognise it for what it is and deal with it in a
healthy, compassionate way so they can stop
carrying it around allowing it to affect their life
today.
Self-forgiveness is a Success
Secret that can make the
biggest difference in your life
when you do it properly.
Ready to learn how?
If you are ready for change, prepared to do
what it takes and want to learn the Success
Secrets that will change your life, come along

out about the Success & Self-Empowerment
Mentorship 8-week Intensive which starts

Following on from my last wet weather
report … nothing has happened by late
February other than it is now wetter than
ever! Perhaps by the time you read this,
things might have improved, we can but
hope.
Other than dealing with
the weather, assuming
that the Agriculture Bill
passes through
parliament relatively
unaltered, farmers will
soon be tussling with
forthcoming changes to
agricultural support,
against the uncertainty
of a new trading
environment post-Brexit.
Rural Ramblings -View from the Farm
Julia Hawley helps husband Ian
and his family to run Hall Farm
in Brentingby where his family
have farmed since the 1880’s.
Here they manage a traditional
mixed farm with sheep, beef,
arable and dairy enterprises.
Currently support payments take two forms –
the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and agrienvironment
schemes. Most farmers opt into
the former, which pays on an acreage basis
in return for compliance with a range of laws
and extra requirements. On most commercial
cropping arms, this includes an element of
‘greening’ such as maintaining hedgerows,
environmentally friendly cover crops or areas
of fallow. Fewer farmers are in the latter,
which pays for very specific elements of
capital and ongoing environmental work
tailored to each farm and applications have
historically been assessed on a ‘value for
money’ basis.
The Basic Payment will be phased out from
2021, with the largest reductions initially on
larger farms, but it will disappear from all
farms by 2027.
‘public payment for public goods’. As well as
options such as those currently available –
e.g. hay meadow management, pollen and
nectar mixes, beetle banks, protection of
historic landscapes – other ecosystem
services will be supported, such as flood
management and carbon sequestration.
Designing such a scheme is very complex
and widespread consultation with farmers
and other groups is taking place. Taking part
in such a scheme will probably be the only
way that farmers will gain any public sector
support.
The worrying part is that on many farms,
current profit equals or
is less than the current
Basic Payment – in
other words, the costs
of producing milk,
meat, vegetables, grain
and other produce are
more than the sales
revenue from them.
Taking part in any
environmental scheme
carries its own costs
and any ‘profit’ from the payment is unlikely
to support current farm viability.
This will be the biggest shake-up to our
industry for over 40 years when we joined the
Common Agricultural Policy. There is
potential for some productivity and efficiency
increases, partly with adoption of new
technology, but recent weather has shown
how our ability to produce food is, as ever, at
the mercy of the weather.
Will there be a much – needed realism that
the price of food has to rise if welfare and
environmental standards are to be
maintained? Or will consumers – via the
multiple retailers and big caterers – opt for
the easy option buying cheaper and possibly
food from where standards are not so
demanding?
A new scheme will be introduced –
supposedly from 2024 although that is
looking optimistic. The Environmental Land
Management (ELM) scheme will provide

Thread Veins
Also known as Spider or Red Veins
Thread Veins and Spider Naevi are
closely related (both are a type
of telangiectasia). They are caused
by tiny dilated blood vessels which
are close enough to the surface of the
skin to be visible. Whilst harmless,
many people consider
them unsightly.
They most
commonly cause
distress when
they are on the
face where they
are often seen
under the nose
or on the
cheeks and chin where they can
normally be successfully treated.

Make do and mend?
The Sewing Box which is
situated at the Melton
Market on Scalford Road,
celebrated its first year in
business last month.
Owner, Yvonne Hunt, has
many years of sewing
experience and originally worked in a ladies’
clothing factory in Bourne. As she explains,
“Before I started the Sewing Box, I was working
in a clothing alteration shop for someone else,
but I have always wanted to be my own boss.”
A large number of Yvonne’s customers want
straight forward hems taking up, trousers
shortening, waist bands taken in and zips
replacing. Sometimes this can be done while
you wait. Rather than always buying new,
Yvonne can offer a valuable service either
repairing, restoring or even re-vamping your
clothes. She can also make bespoke fabric
items such as headbands, bags and cushions.
Next month she is hoping to start up a satellite
dry cleaning drop off service from the shop too.
Please ring her for details.

A fresh start for business as usual
As the new decade starts to take effect,
so a new era begins at A&G Chem-Dry.
Mike and Jackie Clark, who together
successfully ran the business for 24 years,
have now retired and
handed it over to their
son Stuart.
Stuart has already been
part of the team for 12
years and many of you
may have already met or
spoken to him before.
As a technician he began
by learning the technical
and cleaning side. His
training has taken him
from the Rocky
mountains in Utah in the
USA to Beverley near
Hull in the UK. He will still be out and about
on the road, taking more of the quoting and
cleaning duties, but also tempering that with
some days in the office to maintain the
paperwork and admin side of the business.
Mike and Jackie would like to thank all the
loyal (and future) customers of the Melton
area for their continued support over the
years, many of whom have been with them
from the start. They hope
you will continue to
support Stuart in the years
ahead and keep A&G
Chem-Dry as the leading
Carpet, Upholstery, Rugs,
Leather and Granite
cleaners in the area.
This year will see the
companies 25 th
Anniversary. Over those
years many changes have
been made to the
products and machines
used to keep Chem Dry at
the top of their game.
Be sure in the knowledge that as new future
updates arrive we will be actively learning and
implementing them to keep us at that cutting
edge.
Look out on their website for special offers.

Spring is a beautiful time of year. A time
for new beginnings. It’s always lovely to
see lambs skipping in the fields around
the tearoom and new shoots bursting
forth on our tea bushes. It’s a great time
to try something new.
We’ve got lots of exciting creative classes
and workshops lined up for you this year,
including Creative Collage with our new
featured artist Nicola
Ward, on 23rd May. In
the spirit of recycling,
Nicola creates wonderful
artwork using old, ripped
up magazines. Come
and meet Nicola and
other talented artists at
our Mad Hatter's Tea
Party on 13th April.
We believe everyone has the ability to create
something beautiful and we’d like to inspire
you to have a go. This year’s Tea Party
theme is Mad Hats. We’ve launched a Mad
Hat design and colour competition. Let your
imagination run wild and free, like Alice in
Wonderland. Design the maddest hat you can
possibly imagine. Draw, paint, colour,
embellish and glue whatever you like onto
your hat shape. Go to our website to
download a special sheet. Get your entry to
us by 10th April and you could WIN tea &
cake for two! We’d love to see you wearing
your creations on 13th April - the madder the
better!
If you love to craft and chatter, doodle and
draw, knit and natter, then join our NEW
Creative Hub Club. Come and meet creative
colleagues every third Tuesday of the month
from 7-9pm. Bring your knitting, sewing,
sketch pad, ipad, UFOs (Un Finished
Objects). Enjoy a couple of hours of creative
escape. Our next gathering is on 21st April.
Don’t worry if you can’t make it, you can
always arrange to meet your creative
companions anytime we’re open.
You’ll find full details of all our events,
creative classes, tea tastings and more on
our website:

Rabbits have specific needs if they’re to
live happy and healthy lives. From clean
living conditions to a nutritional diet, here
are some of their basic, non-negotiable
requirements for health and happiness.
Living quarters
A spacious, safe and secure
hutch with an attached and
enclosed outdoor run allows
your rabbit to get the exercise
they need. Rabbits love to run
around and chew or play with
toys. An outdoor hutch should
allow enough space for them
to stand on their hind legs,
stretch out whilst lying down,
and have a substantial run attached. Rabbits
kept in a confined space sometimes develop
skeletal problems, so it’s crucial to attach a
good-sized exercise area to the hutch. This
also allows you to see more of your pet, and
makes cleaning easier.
Rabbits require a safe, quiet and enclosed
place to rest and sleep away from view– this
could be a separate ‘room’ within the hutch, or
an area away from the main living quarters
Pets - Happy bunnies
divided by hay or straw. Their outdoor home
should be sheltered from direct sunlight and
strong winds, and offer protection from other
pets or predators such as foxes that roam
around at night.
Nutrition
Rabbits need lots of fresh vegetables,
particularly leafy greens,
rabbit pellets, a little fruit, and
plenty of hay to grind down their
teeth. They also like to eat
grass, but not the clippings from
your lawnmower – grass should
be growing within their reach, or
freshly picked in clumps from
the garden. A fresh supply of
clean drinking water is essential,
and in summer you’ll need to change it regularly
so they don’t pick up any bacteria.
Health checks
Their nails and teeth need to be checked regularly
to make sure they’re not too long, and
also their tails and bottom area, particularly in
the summer when fly strike is a huge danger.
Having a vet check them at least annually is
also essential for long-term health.

This time of the year are some of
their worst months of the year and
this year has been no exception.
The extreme wet weather has
meant that they have had to bring
the horses off the swamped fields
onto the yard.
It costs about £1000 a month just for the hay to feed
them, not to mention the vets’ bills. The sanctuary
currently homes over 90 horses and ponies who have
nowhere else to go. The sanctuary is desperate for
both funds and volunteers to help either with the
horses themselves or to fund raise.
Please, please help. Any help or donation, however
small, would be so much appreciated!
Please call owner and founder Carol Fielding on
07745628684 for any help you can offer.
