ATP is produced and/or brokendown in metabolic processes in all living systems. Processes such as photosynthesis in plants,muscle contraction in humans, respiration in fungi and fermentation in yeast are all driven byATP.Hygiena luminometers (in conjunction with ATP swabs) use bioluminescence to detect residualATP as an indicator of surface cleanliness. The presence of ATP on a surface indicates impropercleaning and the presence of contamination, including food residue, allergens and/or bacteriaand viruses. This implies a potential for the surface to harbour and support further bacterialgrowth.We believe that using this system to test, measure and report on the effectiveness of cleaningwill become more important in a much wider range of business sectors over coming monthsand years and provides an instant result to show the effectiveness of equipment, chemicals andcleaning.
