Each of our exceptional dogs is born in our outstanding breeding 

program. The best of the best dogs at Canine Companions for 

Independence (CCI) are selected to be breeders. The dogs in each of 

these photos on the right are the progeny of CCI breeder dog Adah. 

Adah is cared for by volunteer breeder caretakers Bob and Chris 

Kittredge. Bob and Chris have been CCI puppy raisers, breeder 

caretakers and volunteers for 16 years. Adah, seen here with her pup

2006: The Chinese 

Year of the Dog 

According to Chinese Zodiac, people born 

in this year are loyal, honest and inspire 

confidence; the dogs we breed, train and 

place at Canine Companions for Independence share 

these traits. 

At Canine Companions for Independence every 

year is the year of the dog. Our work is based on 

cultivating the abilities of dogs and celebrating their 

spirits. For most pet owners, a dog’s ability includes 

playing fetch and hogging beds. Their spirits help you 

smile after a long day or relax after a hard one. At CCI, 

our dogs are this and so much more. 

Our Canine Companions perform tasks that many 

of us take for granted. A Canine Companion isn’t the 

dog waiting in the dark house for you to come home; 

a Canine Companion is flipping the switch so you 

can see. A Canine Companion isn’t mischievously 

chewing your favorite shoes; a Canine Companion 

is getting your shoes so you can get dressed on your 

own. A Canine Companion isn’t cleaning your child’s 

sticky face with kisses; a Canine 

Companion is nudging your leg, alerting you to the 

sound of your child calling. 

In 2006, we placed 178 Canine Companions in 

graduate teams to improve the lives of adults and children 

with disabilities. But Canine Companions are just half of 

the graduate team. The other half? Courageous people 

with indomitable human spirits who filled 2006 with 

inspiration and the power of independence. We tell some 

of their stories in this report. 

Independence is the objective that drives every 

year and every day at CCI. In 2006 we achieved 

this objective, with our state-of-the-art breeding 

program, holding 24 Team Training graduations 

and completing over 900 follow-up visits to ensure 

our graduates continue to experience heightened 

independence with their Canine Companion. 

This independence is completely dependent on 

support of donors and volunteers like you. Thank 

you for creating independence and making 2006 

Year of the Dog, another year of exceptional dogs for 

exceptional people!

Profile: Nancy Baumann, Volunteer 

In 1995 Nancy Baumann began volunteering for Canine Companions for 

Independence as an administrative volunteer. Nancy’s joy, commitment and 

passion for the CCI mission are inspirational. Her infectious enthusiasm led 

her to raise five CCI puppies and serve as Chair of the Southeast Regional 

Gala for ten years. Currently, she is President-elect of the Southeast Regional 

Board. 

In 2006, CCI recognized her with the Jack Warnock award, given annually 

to a volunteer who exhibits significant dedication to CCI and its mission. 

Also in 2006, Nancy’s tremendous contributions were recognized by the 

Central Florida Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals as 

they presented her with their Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award. Her 

response to how she can give so much of herself is, “What I receive from CCI 

far outweighs anything I could give.” 

Nancy’s passion will forever be a part of Canine Companions for 

Independence. In 2000, a tiny black fur ball named Baumann, Nancy’s 

namesake, entered the CCI family. In October 2001, Baumann became a CCI 

breeder and as of December 2006 sired over 450 CCI puppies. Recently, 

Nancy traveled from Florida to CCI National Headquarters in Santa Rosa, 

California where she met Baumann for the first time. Smiling from ear to ear, 

she said, “To meet Baumann, and hear my name resonate throughout our 

organization, from the east to west coast, fills me with so much pride and joy!”

organizations. To honor them, Canine Companions for Independence 

will continue to provide the highest quality assistance dogs and services to 

people with disabilities. 

Community Foundation Partners 

CCI partners with community foundations in many communities 

to build a stronger network for donors. As a national non-profit 

organization, Canine Companions for Independence is privileged 

to work with over 20 community foundations across the country. 

Community foundations assist CCI with a variety of needs ranging from 

general operating funds, veterinary support and sponsoring graduate 

teams. We look forward to working with more community foundations 

each year to improve communities by providing more independence for 

people with disabilities.

Profile: Anne and Wayne Gittinger, Donors 

A Model of Dedication 

Passionate, dedicated and generous. These are the words that best describe 

Anne and Wayne Gittinger. They first learned about Canine Companions for 

Independence in 1986, and have made generous contributions every year since. 

“Anne and Wayne’s passion for our graduates and students is evident in 

everything they do for CCI,” says Corey Hudson, CCI’s chief executive officer. 

The scope of how the Gittingers give to CCI expresses their passion. 

The residence hall that houses community functions and dormitories for the 

Northwest Regional Training Center in Santa Rosa, California, is Gittinger Hall. 

Anne and Wayne not only made this building possible, but their passion makes it a 

home. Anne personally oversees the arrangement of each piece of furniture, curtain 

and painting in Gittinger Hall. Team Training participants who experience the 

result of Anne’s passion often comment on how each detail of the dormitories puts 

them at ease. Some even ask for the decorator to go home with them! 

And where do Team Training participants, human and canine, let loose? Why, 

Gittinger Park, of course. Wayne saw the need for, and personally ensured the 

creation of Gittinger Park where Team Training participants get to “release” their 

dogs and play! 

Anne, vice president of the national board and national board member 

since 1994, and Wayne have made their passion for the CCI mission a family 

commitment. Their son John Wm. Hopen, CCI national board member, 

shares, “The commitment to the CCI mission shown and lived by my folks is 

setting a benchmark for what I in turn hope to continue. CCI 

touches so much of what is right, good and deserving of 

attention, that from our perspective our involvement is 

automatic. My mother and Wayne are inspirational 

to me and they are dedicated to the core.”

Puppies 

CCI has developed a proven formula for breeding, raising and training 

assistance dogs over the past 31 years. Our staff knows each individual 

dog’s unique qualities — enabling us to reliably match people with the 

dog who will best meet their needs. 

Breeding — Volunteers provide permanent homes to CCI’s breeder 

dogs and nurture newborn pups until they’re eight weeks old. 

CCI breeds Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and a cross of 

the two. 660 puppies were born in 2006. Puppies for all five CCI 

regions are born in the homes of 95 volunteer breeder caretakers 

in California. 

Puppy Raising — Puppy raisers make sure the pups have many 

opportunities to socialize in a variety of environments. In 2006, 

puppies were placed with 862 volunteer puppy raisers for 13 to 

18 months. The pups receive lots of love and attention and learn 

basic obedience. 

Building Partnerships: Prison Puppy Raising Programs 

The Prison Puppy Raising Program is often life changing to participating inmates. One participant, 

Sharon, shared, “Being a puppy raiser was a self-esteem builder for me and kept me from becoming 

hard hearted. I learned discipline, how to put something ahead of myself, and finally, I took responsibility 

for my actions. Not only do these puppies open doors for people with disabilities, but also for 

people with some social ones.” The first puppy Sharon raised is a CCI Skilled Companion for Kelsey, a 

13-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. 

CCI has been building partnerships with correctional facilities since 1995. In 2006 CCI partnered 

with 2 more facilities and now has puppy raising programs in 13 correctional facilities located in Florida, 

Oregon, Montana, Mississippi, Washington, Ohio, Colorado, and California. Each facility agrees 

to care for and train the puppies according to CCI guidelines including providing them with socialization 

outside the facility. As of December 2006, the inmates of these facilities raised 160 CCI puppies.

Profile: Joan Buntin, Puppy Raiser and Breeder Caretaker 

Joan Buntin is first to admit that puppy raising can be a difficult task at times. But she 

wouldn’t trade the job for anything in the world. Now raising her eleventh puppy, 

Joan’s commitment has helped CCI achieve its mission. As much as she’s taught the 

growing puppies under her care, the dogs have provided her with many lessons as well. 

Joan faces new challenges with each puppy—and new opportunities. Joan 

shares, “My circle of friends has expanded to include many wonderful people 

which include graduates, puppy raisers, breeder caretakers and CCI staff and 

volunteers. ‘Dog people’ are the best!” 

Public outings with her puppies are a learning experience as well, “It would be 

so much easier to just run in the store and leave the pup in the car because people 

always want to pet the dog.” A naturally shy person, she was initially nervous 

when strangers would approach her. But now she embraces these opportunities to 

educate the public. “One of the many benefits of being a puppy raiser is meeting 

people wherever I go, talking about my pup, CCI, and the wonderful people that 

receive these dogs. I used to be afraid to speak in front of a group, but now talking 

about CCI and my pup is second nature.” 

Joan’s diligent efforts to face the challenges of training, educating the public 

and turning in her puppies have yielded impressive results. Five of her puppies 

have graduated, two became breeders, and one is in training! Learning to let go has 

been one of the hardest, but most rewarding exercises for Joan as a puppy raiser. But 

she has done it again and again and again… “The question I get asked most is ‘How 

can you give the pup back’? My answer is ‘How can you not’ when you see how 

these dogs change people’s lives.” 


Training and Graduates 

A labor of love, dedication and skill. 

It takes two years and thousands of hours of hard work to produce a Graduate Team. 

Training — Training CCI dogs is a highly 

structured program that takes place at five 

Regional Training Centers across the country. 

Training lasts six to nine months. During that time 

professional CCI instructors teach the dogs to 

master 50 specialized commands. Then dogs enter 

Team Training where they are matched with an 

adult or child with a disability. 

Team Training — An intensive two-week training 

course teaches dog handling and care, training 

methods and commands and field trips where 

individuals can practice as a team with their 

potential assistance dog. Twenty-four Team 

Training sessions took place across the country 

in 2006, with 178 teams placed. Each team 

participates in a Team Training graduation, which 

is the joyful start of a new life together.

Ongoing Support — Graduate teams can remain 

active for ten years or more, and CCI had 1237 

active teams in 2006. Follow-up services include 

in-person visits, phone calls, e-mail and regular 

training workshops to add extra skills and finetune 

existing ones. In 2006, 668 graduates 

received follow-up services from CCI, and 

901 follow-up visits were conducted across the 

country. 

When a dog is ready to retire, CCI assists 

graduates in planning the dog’s retirement and in 

applying for a successor Canine Companion. 

There is no charge to graduates for the assistance 

dog, its training, or ongoing follow-up services. Your 

generous support is what makes CCI teams possible.

Instructors and Staff 

Joining the CCI family of caring 

and dedicated supporters, staff and 

volunteers is a unique opportunity. 

Employees are surrounded by and 

work with others that share both a 

love for dogs and a commitment to 

improving the lives of people with 

disabilities. 

The exceptional abilities of 

CCI assistance dogs would not be 

possible without the knowledge 

and expertise of CCI instructors, 

with 20 apprentice instructors and 

24 full instructors in 2006. CCI 

continues to develop instructors 

for a professional career in canine 

training and service to people with 

disabilities. Instructor Assistants in 

the Apprenticeship Program learn 

skills to train CCI assistance dogs 

and create quality partnerships. 

Profile: Clark Pappas, Staff 

As a kid in Berkeley, California, Clark Pappas enjoyed teaching 

neighborhood dogs to retrieve baseballs. “Often my friends and I would 

play ball in the park across the street,” says Clark. “If we were short on 

players, I’d have my dog Hunny fill in as an outfielder. I guess that’s where 

it all began.” This favorite childhood pastime would translate into a career 

dedicated to assistance dog training for people with disabilities. 

Clark was hired as a CCI trainer at the Northwest Regional Training 

Center in 1988. He learned about physical disabilities, dog behavior, and 

learning theory. He was soon not only leading, but also finding ways to 

improve the class curriculum. “With just two weeks to transform these 

individuals into professional-level dog handlers, we constantly sought new 

ways to make the best use of that time,” says Clark. 

These lessons were put to good use in 1991, when he was promoted 

to National Program Director. This challenging position oversaw the 

breeding, puppy raising, canine training, team training and participant 

programs. Clark developed a formal in-person follow-up program for CCI 

graduates, which continues to evolve and today it is integral to CCI’s 

mission. 

Clark is currently the National Director of Participant Programs where 

he administers all participant-related programs including Team Training 

instruction coordination, applicant outreach and selection, and graduate 

services. Most recently, Clark began leading CCI’s efforts outreaching to 

U.S. Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. 

Clark is instrumental in bringing Assistance Dogs International (ADI) 

accreditation from the drawing board to a real-life evaluation process. 

His spearheading efforts help ensure that all participating organizations 

uphold the highest standards, including humane treatment of assistance 

dogs, respect for clients, and professional training 

programs throughout the country and the world. 

Long after his childhood foray into dog 

training on the baseball field, Clark’s passion 

for assistance dog work continues as he leads 

initiatives at CCI and ADI. 


Four Types of Teams 

Chuck and 

Service Dog 

Hammill 

When Chuck’s friend and veterinarian first suggested 

that he apply for an assistance dog from Canine 

Companions for Independence, Chuck’s response 

was, “But I’m not blind.” After learning that CCI 

assistance dogs are trained to master over 50 

commands such as retrieving objects, flipping light 

switches and opening doors, it didn’t take long for 

Chuck to see how an assistance dog could improve 

his quality of life. 

In 1995, Chuck graduated from the Southeast 

Regional Training Center with Service Dog Darby. 

Currently, Chuck is a retired minister, serves on 

several boards and teaches with the assistance of his 

successor Service Dog Hammill. 

Hammill assists Chuck daily, and this is a great 

comfort to Chuck’s wife Linda. “It gives her more 

security that Hammill is here when she is not with 

me,” says Chuck. Chuck recalls when Linda 

was in the pool, and he fell in the shower. Chuck 

commanded Hammill, “Go get Linda.” Hammill 

went to the pool, and Linda immediately knew that 

Chuck needed help. 

Chuck sums up by saying, 

“Hammill’s just been great. He’s

always present with me. I can give 

him a command instead of asking 

for help; he gives me more security, 

independence and daily companionship. 

He really improves the quality of my life.” 


Brian and Skilled Companion Arrow II 

Louise was concerned. Her son Brian, who has 

cerebral palsy, was entering a new phase of life. He 

was no longer a schoolboy. But he wasn’t capable of 

being an independent adult. Something was missing 

from his life, but what? 

Then Louise heard about CCI. “It was a sign,” 

she says. She applied for a dog the next day. Arrow II 

became Brian’s Skilled Companion in 

early 2005. 

Skilled “It’s the best thing we’ve ever 

Companion done for Brian,” Louise says. 

Dogs “Arrow helps him in every part of 

his life – physically, emotionally 

and socially.” 

Arrow retrieves dropped objects, moves things 

out of the way, opens doors and is Brian’s constant 

companion. His presence on the bed even soothes 

Brian back to sleep after nightmares. 

With Arrow, people no longer stare at Brian. 

They come over and talk to him. “Brian feels so much 

better about himself,” Louise says. “He is so happy.” 

So is Arrow. 

Brian says, “Arrow is the best thing that’s 

ever happened to me. He’s my Best Buddy.”

CCI. “We want to 

give back to CCI 

what they’ve given 

to Brian,” says Bill.

Jessie and Facility Dog Daniel II 

Jessie is the Recreation Director at Wendell Foster’s 

Campus, which provides support to individuals with 

cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. 

The mood at the facility has been 

uplifted with the introduction of 

Facility Dogs CCI Facility Dog Daniel. “Daniel 

has been a blessing to everyone, 

residents and staff here at WFC. 

Daniel has that special gift of making 

people smile,” says Jessie. 

For patients like Willy, featured here, Daniel 

helps open up doors and pick up dropped items, 

which increases feelings of independence. For others, 

he is a beloved companion and reassuring presence. 

With the “lap” command, they are assured that 

they will receive unconditional love and affection of 

their furry friend. For still others, Daniel serves as a 

rehabilitation buddy, playing tug of war exercises to 

build muscle coordination and strength. 

Jessie is grateful everyday for the presence of 

her CCI Facility Dog. “Daniel is like an automatic 

confidence builder for some individuals in our 

program. The companionship they never had is now 

around day in and day out,” shares Jessie. 

Maria and Hearing Dog Jared III 

Maria, a 33-year old professional, had partial hearing 

in one ear until several years ago, when she became 

deaf. CCI Hearing Dog Jared has helped her adjust 

to this sometimes challenging life change. 

Each morning, Jared wakes Maria 

up by alerting her to the alarm clock.

As she boils water for tea and gets 

ready for work, Jared alerts her to 

the sound of the tea kettle. 

While at work, Jared alerts 

Maria by nudging her leg when a co- 

worker calls her name. Jared has helped Maria build 

bridges of communication with her co-workers and 

others. “He is a favorite in the office and helps me to 

feel accepted,” says Maria. “He invites conversation 

and interaction, at which point people realize I am 

smart and funny and fun to talk to.” 

Above and beyond the practical benefits of Jared’s 

alerting Maria to sounds in her environment, his 

presence brightens her every day, “It’s so nice to be 

able to reach down and pet him, or issue the lap 

command so I can give him a big old hug. He’s 

my best pal, and a true hero.” 


CCI Regional Centers 

Southwest 

Thanks to its devoted associates, 

a legion of committed volunteers, 

and the generosity of its donors, 

the Southwest Region exceeded 

its annual goals, including raising 

nearly $2 million for the operating 

budget. Other highlights and 

achievements include: 

• The Wheels of Wonder 

weekend drew cycling’s elite 

celebrities and their admirers 

to the fundraising event. 

• Four disability awareness “in 

service” programs were held. 

• A canine influenza outbreak 

was quickly controlled and 

earned positive press. 

• Paws to Remember celebration 

marked 20 years of quality 

partnerships in 

the Southwest 

Region, and 

drew hundreds of people to the 

campus to reflect on the past, 

savor the present and look to 

the future (all while enjoying a 

delicious BBQ lunch!). 

Northwest 

Thanks to the efforts of a dedicated 

and talented staff, an army 

of incredible volunteers, and 

financial support from individuals, 

foundations, organizations 

and the business community, the 

Northwest Region enjoyed a productive 

and successful 2006. Here
