Become a Registered Professional Forester Are You Eligible? You must be a registered member with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP) to practise professional forestry in BC. The ABCFP is the registering and regulatory body for BC’s forest professionals, including Registered Professional Foresters (RPFs) and Registered Forest Technologists (RFTs). The primary routes of entry for becoming an RPF in BC are to enrol first as a Forester in Training (FIT) or an Allied Science Forester in Training (ASFIT). Refer to the flowchart below to determine if you are eligible to enrol under one of these routes of entry. Eligibility Flowchart Start Here: Are you a Canadian citizen or otherwise legally eligible to work in Canada? YES Do you have an undergraduate degree in forestry ? Is your program accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board (CFAB)? Visit the CFAB website for a full list of accredited programs: www.cfab.ca YES You may be eligible to enrol as an FIT. YES NO NO If your forestry degree is recognized by the ABCFP, you may be eligible to enrol as an ASFIT. Contact the registration department to discuss your eligibility: admissions@abcfp.ca You are not eligible for enrolment. Are You Registered to Practice Forestry in Another Canadian Jurisdiction? If you are a professional forester practising in another Canadian jurisdiction, you may be eligible to apply for special permit registration under the Transferring Professional Forester route of entry. Refer to the Registration Policy, available on our website (www.abcfp.ca), for full details on eligibility requirements. Benefits Of Membership* Once you have become registered as an RPF, you: 1. Are eligible to practise forestry in BC. 2. Are a member of the largest forestry association in Canada. 3. Have access to association resources and services. 4. Are eligible to serve on the ABCFP’s council and committees. 5. Are eligible to vote during council and bylaw elections and make award nominations. NO Do you have a degree in a discipline that is related to forestry such as natural resource management, terrestrial biology or aquatic biology? If your degree is recognized by the ABCFP, you may be eligible to register as an ASFIT. Contact the registration department to discuss your eligibility: admissions@abcfp.ca NO Do you have a graduate (MSc or PhD) degree in forestry? YES If your degree is recognized by the ABCFP, you may be eligible to register as an ASFIT. Contact the registration department to discuss your eligibility: admissions@abcfp.ca NO Do you have a diploma in forest technology or a discipline related to forestry such as natural resources management, recreation, fish and wildlife? YES If your forestry diploma is recognized by the ABCFP, you may be eligible to enrol as an Trainee Forest Technologist. Contact the registration department to discuss your eligibility: admissions@abcfp.ca
6. Have the opportunity to comment on and provide input on various professional matters including the direction of the ABCFP. 7. Have access to group discounts for insurance, car leases, memberships and more. *If your special permit application as a Transferring Professional Forester is granted, you will receive certain rights of title and either full or partial rights of practice. How Do I Apply? To apply for membership with the ABCFP under the Forester in Training, Allied Science Forester in Training or Transferring Professional Forester (special permit) routes of entry, complete the attached RPF Application Package. Application Process Step 1: Check for eligibility. if eligible Step 2: Check for completeness. if complete Application received in the association office. Step 3: Work experience anniversary date is set and application is sent to the board of examiners for approval. if approved Step 4: Application is approved by council. if approved Step 5: Granted member status as an FIT, ASFIT or Transferring Professional Forester. Step 6: FITs and ASFITs must complete an articling period. All of the requirements of the articling period must be met before you are eligible to write the registration exam. Transferring Professional Foresters are not required to complete an articling period and can write the registration exam at the first available opportunity. Refer to the Registration Policy, available on the website (www.abcfp.ca), for complete details. Step 7: Write the RPF registration exam. on successful completion Step 8: Approved by council and granted registered member status as a RPF. Questions? If not approved, the registration department will work with you to see if deficiencies can be addressed. If these requirements are not met within the allotted time, you may be removed from the association’s register.
