Mike Larock, RPF, does all <strong>of</strong> our pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice and forest<br />

stewardship work. He and his committees deal with a huge number<br />

<strong>of</strong> practice issues brought about by the move to pr<strong>of</strong>essional reliance.<br />

For example, staff with the assistance <strong>of</strong> the Practice Advisory Service<br />

and others answer about 200 calls a year—not all <strong>of</strong> them turn into<br />

formal inquiries but they still have to be dealt with on an almost daily<br />

basis. In addition, the A<strong>BC</strong>FP has created a large number <strong>of</strong> guidance<br />

papers over the past few years. These papers<br />

take many hours to produce and <strong>of</strong>ten involve<br />

outside organizations. We think it is extremely<br />

important for our members that we provide<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice guidance to not only<br />

guide members in the best direction for prac-<br />

tice but to also establish the standard <strong>of</strong> pro-<br />

fessional practice. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional reliance suc-<br />

cess requires sufficient guidance for members.<br />

Our member relations area is run by<br />

Brian Robinson, RPF. Brian’s role is to ensure<br />

members are competent to practise forestry<br />

and the three-part continuing competency<br />

program (self-assessments, peer reviews<br />

and practice reviews) has now been fully<br />

implemented. When it was conceived, the<br />

plan was to hire a consultant to conduct<br />

the practice reviews after the pilot year.<br />

Unfortunately, we cannot afford to hire a<br />

consultant so Brian is conducting all the prac-<br />

tice reviews in addition to his other duties.<br />

Brian is also in charge <strong>of</strong> most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

workshops—both online and in-person—as<br />

well as creating new technical occupations,<br />

accreditation programs and scopes <strong>of</strong><br />

practice through the <strong>Forest</strong> Measurements<br />

Board for associate members. He and his<br />

committee set the entrance requirements<br />

for cruisers last year and are currently<br />

working on application requirements for<br />

silviculture surveyors and accreditation<br />

requirements for waste assessors.<br />

The communications team is led by<br />

Amanda Brittain, MA, and is responsible for<br />

every piece <strong>of</strong> communication that leaves<br />

the A<strong>BC</strong>FP. The website is an especially<br />

labour intensive communication vehicle<br />

as it requires constant maintenance and<br />

updating to ensure members have access to<br />

the latest information quickly. The <strong>BC</strong> <strong>Forest</strong><br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional magazine is much beloved by the<br />

membership and fills a needed pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

development role as well as a communications<br />

one. In the past year, the communications<br />

team has added social media to its arsenal<br />

by establishing a Facebook page, Twitter ac-<br />

for members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>BC</strong> <strong>Forest</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

The work mentioned above is just a sampling <strong>of</strong> the activities<br />

taking place at the A<strong>BC</strong>FP. Of course, we have a finance team<br />

that ensures all finance, human resources and IT issues are<br />

taken care <strong>of</strong> for the benefit <strong>of</strong> both staff and members.<br />
