Working in the garden ofthe family’s estate in Hinterbrühl, Motesiczkygathered objects from inside the Villa Todesco,by now closed up, which were suitable forbeing painted in bright sunshine. From the‘English corner’ of the drawing room sheselected a stool with a floral chintz cover (asreal flowers would have wilted in the sun).Propped against the wall on the brightlycoloured cushion is a sepia photograph in agolden frame, crowning the arrangement. Agraceful little wickerwork footrest sits underneaththe stool, a tennis ball balanced on topof it. Distinct, dark shadows give shape andsolidity to the fragile equilibrium of the objects.In the world economic crisis of the late1920s the members of the Motesiczky familylost substantial parts of their immense fortune.They subsequently had to cut back dramaticallyand went to live in the smaller Swiss chaleton the estate. The villa, with its notoriouslyuneven floors caused by the undergroundstream on which it was built, had to be pulleddown in the 1930s. The family’s apparent securitywas finally crushed in 1938 when the artistand her mother were forced to flee the country.The photograph is based loosely on a familyphotograph from the 1860s, showing relativeson her mother’s side who, sadly, cannot beidentified from the photograph. Alongside tworound vignettes of individual family membersthis group photograph was proudly displayedin the salon of the Villa Todesco, installed onan elaborate wooden panel (fig. 55). Motesiczkysimplified the photograph by leaving outseveral ancestors in the painted version.Still-life with Photo had a special meaningfor the artist’s mother Henriette von Motesiczky,who bought it from the exhibition at the BeauxArts Gallery in January 1960 for £ 94.10.0. Inan undated (and probably much later) poemabout the painting – included in the book ofHenriette von Motesiczky’s poems anddrawings that the artist created in memoryof her mother for friends and relatives in theearly 1980s – she had expressed her admirationfor the painting and nostalgia for the lostworld and the deception it held, captured bythe image:Family PortraitThe hot bright rays of sunThe deep shadows of that time,You could paint them in a pictureNow captured for eternity.And you have forgotten nothing in it,The picture of the people on the wallHow they all sat there like that,Maybe that no one felt anything.The old thick garden stoolWhere tired feet used to rest,What the picture means to me, only youcan judgeIt captures the high spirits of youth.Carefree living, laughter and some tearsWhen the tennis ball flew pastA scrap of colourful chintz could drawit togetherInto a world that perhaps betrayed us 1Motesiczky was pleased with this painting and,rather uncharacteristically, praised it: ‘everyinch of canvas has the right amount of colour,thickness, transparency.
