world.
Amongst Chinese printers, the CD 102, is
affectionately referred to as the “all-rounder” because
of its sturdy built and flexibility, stable printing
prowess, and high automation. Since its emergence
at the Drupa in 1986, it has been a favoured machine
for packaging printers across the world.
It was in September 2009 that the first
Speedmaster CD 102 four-colour machine rolled

The Speedmaster CD 102-9+L with the No. 9,999 printing unit from Heidelberg Shanghai factory with the special design featuring a painting of the Great Wall.
In his address to the gathering, Rainer
mentioned that China is the single largest
market for Heidelberg. Interestingly, he also
added that although the Corona pandemic
is unexpected, from the perspective of sales
in the first half of the year, it still exceeds
the level of the same period of the previous
year. “The sales and production team in the
Chinese market will be increased to 1,000
from the present strength,” announced
Rainer.
In a festive ceremony at the production site
Heidelberg Graphic Equipment Shanghai
(HGES), the packaging printing company
Xian Jun Long was presented with a
certificate recognizing the manufacture of the
9,999th printing unit in China. In a greeting
sent via video link, Rainer paid tribute to the
high level of commitment and successful
engagement in China. “Our factory in
Shanghai has proven a real success story
for Heidelberg in our core business and for
our customers. China is the largest individual
market for us, and we want to continue to
expand our market share of over 50 percent
as well as our technological leadership
in what is an important market for us by
continuing our program of investment.”
Packaging printing company
Xian Jun Long’s success with
Heidelberg machines
The printing company Xian Jun Long
in Shenzhen is set to take delivery of a
Speedmaster CD 102-9+L featuring the
9,999th printing unit. As a special design
feature, a picture of the Great Wall has been
painted on all the printing units to tie in with
the wall’s historical length of 10,000 li. Xian
Jun Long is one of the leading packaging
printing companies in China, specializing
in packagings for spirits, cigarettes, and
luxury goods. The partnership between Xian
Jun Long and Heidelberg goes back twenty
years – and the Speedmaster CD 102 with
the 9999th printing unit from the Shanghai
plant is also in production there. “We already
have the first Speedmaster CD 102-8+L
from the Heidelberg Shanghai plant and
look forward to the new Speedmaster CD
102-9+L in the usual Heidelberg quality due
to be installed here in the near future. We will
have another two sets of Speedmaster CD
102-8+L presses delivered to China Xian
Jun Long Printing Group in August this year.
Our goal is to grow successfully and to offer
our customers products with more added
value,” explained Kelvin Chong, Information
Engineering Director of China Xian Jun Long
Printing Group. The anniversary press is
in operation as part of an extensive fleet of
Speedmaster CD 102 and Speedmaster CX
102 systems.
Growth market China
Packaging printing in China is growing
with greater speed and sustainability than
globally. The Speedmaster CD 102 has long
been a bestseller in the Chinese market – it
is highly versatile, whether for long or short
runs, thin substrates or cardboard with
thicknesses of up to a millimeter – the press
offers outstanding productivity, quality, and
value retention, and thus a high degree of
investment security for customers. “The
market in Asia is evolving, and we are
seeing strong demand for customer-specific
machines and a wealth of variants, especially
for packaging printing,” explained Achim
Mergenthaler, manager of the Heidelberg
site in Shanghai. “We are proud of our high
quality, which – thanks to the high standards
of the Heidelberg production network – is
equal to that of the machines from the
production facility in Wiesloch-Walldorf.”

Over 10,000 printing units have now been delivered over fifteen years from the Heidelberg Shanghai production site.
Heidelberg intends to further accelerate the
expansion of its production in China. Over 30
percent of all printing units are already built
in China. The Shanghai production site will
further increase the manufacture of standard
models for the Chinese and Asian market
and add special machine configurations,
especially in packaging printing, to the
portfolio. This will result in a competitive
offering, particularly for the up-and-coming
printing companies in China, which need the
best machines in terms of productivity and
quality and offer comprehensive solutions.
Heidelberg is therefore the only printing
press manufacturer with the flexibility to offers
its customers both locally manufactured
machines as well as high-end machines from
Germany.
Heidelberg Shanghai:
a success story
The Shanghai production site has a
workforce of around 430 people. Printing
presses in 50 x 70 cm and 70 x 100 cm
formats are produced there, mainly intended
for sale in China, but also for other Asian
markets and the rest of the world. Over
10,000 printing units have now been
delivered over fifteen years.
The site in the industrial zone of Qingpu
near Shanghai commenced operation in
2006, is built to modern standards, and now
encompasses a production area of around
45,000 square meters, making it one of the
biggest printing press factories in Asia based
on square footage.
On-site customer events
The Print Media Center Shanghai is
integrated into the Heidelberg Shanghai plant
and serves as a central showroom for China,
other Asian Pacific markets and neighboring
regions. Here, state-of-the-art technology and
service solutions are presented, information
events are held, and intensive tests and
analyses of equipment, consumables, and
workflow solutions are carried out. Customer
operators are also trained here. The Print
Media Center Shanghai has fully integrated
workflows for commercial and packaging
printers.
“With the extended portfolio and higher
production capacity in the Shanghai plant,
we have reached a new milestone for
Heidelberg China in further expanding our
solutions for packaging printing,” explained
Benny Huang, CEO of Heidelberg Greater
China at the festive presentation ceremony.
“We have been producing the Speedmaster
CD 102 in the Shanghai plant since 2009.
It is a classic sheet-fed printing press for
packaging, label, and commercial printing
companies featuring increasingly innovative
and optimized technologies that is widely
accepted by and popular with Chinese
users.”

Webinar on ‘Creating Customised Cost Centres for Printing Industry in Tally’
DOT Institute of Graphic Communication
(DIGC), disseminating knowledge through
Virtual Education, conducted three Webinars
in the previous few weeks. Now shifting its
focus towards an oft ignored but very criticial
component of business viz., Cost Centres,
DIGC conducted a Web Class on 18th June.
Cost Centres is one component of business
which plays an extremely crucial role in
controlling the costs. The good old Tally is
capable of giving this vital MIS and one can
start with this before investing in costly ERP.
But there is a lack of awareness about this
feature of Tally whereas, if used judiciously
it provides amazing results. Another
advantage is that a majority of accountants in
organizations are usually familiar with Tally for
their daily accounting needs, which means
they need not learn anything afresh.
Excel. The audience was also taught about
apportionment of overhead costs and the
review & analysis of the reports of Cost
Centres from Tally. The participants were a
mix of business owners, accounts & finance
professionals from locations like Mumbai,
Thane, Pune, Ahmednagar, Jaipur, Delhi,
Kottayam, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad
and other parts of the country. The ‘Josh’ of
the participants was also kept high by regular
polls interspersed in between the programme
which threw some very interesting results.
A post event kit of templates related to the
subject was also shared with the participants
along with DIGC’s trademark commitment of
after session support to participants.
“It was a nice Webinar on a topic to which I
was seeking solutions since last 2 decades
and many CAs and Cost Accountants were
not able to provide solutions. It gave a
scientific methodology to analyse data on
Tally. I have heard and listened to Mr. Uday
Dhote in many seminars earlier and liked
his presentation. I would recommend Print
Associations to organise trainings on topics
Units facing difficulties in obtaining
funds from banks
by DIGC.” - Mr. Nirmal Goyal (President,
Popular Printers Secretary, ROPA, Jaipur)
“The feedback of the session given by my
team was very good. It covered high value
and an extremely important subject. I liked it.”
Mr. Fred Poonawala (Comart Lithographers)
Similar sentiments were shared by Mr. Urvesh
Umrigar, Urmegh Printers; Mr. Balakrishna
Rai, Shree Pack Containers; Mrs. Kanchan
Desai, Manish Printers; Mr. Biren Shah, Arun
Bros; and Mr. Vibhakar Vaidya, Spectrum
Offset.
AIPMA has asked details of units facing difficulties latest by 11th June.
With an emphasis now on ‘controlling the
controllable’, the ‘Cost-Centre’ feature in
Tally ERP, if used sensibly, would give an
edge to the organisations. It will help in
identifying department/ activities which are
not contributing to the bottom line while at
the same time, the voucher entries relating
to Cost Centres can be done simultaneously
while doing an Accounting Entry and at the
same time create meaningful dashboards for
the management.
DOT Institute of Graphic Communication
(DIGC) under the expert guidance of CA
Uday Dhote, conducted this one of a kind
‘Web Class’ on ‘Creating Customised Cost
Centres for Printing Industry (Using Tally)’
on 18th June, 2020. With an interactive
and hands-on approach, participants
were taken through the creation of Cost
Centres along with live working in Tally &
All India Plastics Manufacturers Association
(AIPMA) has sought details of units who are
facing difficulties in obtaining funds from
banks. The Association has asked for details
for their reference and further discussion
with the Ministry of MSME, Ministry of
Finance and Department of Chemicals and
Petrochemicals.
“In our meetings with various Ministries in
Government of India, a point that was raised
by many members has been regarding
slow pace of liquidity flow to companies
from the banking sector. Given the situation
at hand and the need for funds by the
industry members to restart operations and
sustain the same over the coming months,
Government is willing to look at more
measures that can be taken to improve the
comfort level of manufacturing industries
and to enable banks to lend expeditiously,”
AIPMA said in a statement.
The above information sought is only to
apprise Government of the ground level
difficulties faced by industry members.
Interest people can send the information
latest by 11th June 2020,” said Deepak
Ballani, Director General, AIPMA.

Webinar on ‘Decoding Payment of Wages during Lockdown w.r.t
Supreme Court Interim Order’
Payment of wages during lockdown has been
a contentious issue especially since the order
passed by the Ministry of Home Affairs under
Disaster Management Act 2005 dated March
29, 2020. This order had been challenged
in the Supreme Court by a number of
organizations since there has been confusion
regarding the responsibility of employers
to pay wages of their employees during
lockdown period. Though the interim order of
June 04, 2020 spelt that no coercive action
be taken against employers there was still a
dilemma of how to pay the wages.
The Supreme Court has passed an interim
order on June 12, 2020 suggesting certain
guidelines for resolution of this issue.
However there are still many doubts
regarding the order and its implementation.
To decode this, DOT Institute of Graphic
Communication (DIGC) has invited Advocate
Mahesh Shukla, an
expert in Labour Laws
and Advisor to important
government institutions
and companies for a
discussion to unravel the
nuances of the order.
The webinar took place
on June 24, 2020
between 4:30 - 6:00
pm. The event was
moderated by CA Uday
Dhote, Director - DOT
Institute of Graphic
Communication, Past
President - MMS,
Chairman - Education &
Training - AIFMP and a
print veteran.

The Print Show postponed to September 2021
Show postponed due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (Covid-19) situation in the UK.
Organisers of The Print Show have confirmed
that the event will be postponed until 2021,
due to the ongoing novel coronavirus
(Covid-19) situation in the UK. The Print
Show, and new sister event The Sign Show,
had been due to run from September 27th
to 29th at the NEC in Birmingham, with a
number of leading brands having already
committed to the show. The two events will
now run from September 28th to 30th next
year at the NEC.
Event director Chris Davies says that while
every effort had been made to go ahead
with the event, it has become clear in recent
weeks that restrictions caused by Covid-19
mean that hosting the show this year would
not be possible.
“Before anything else, the health and safety
of our exhibitors and guests is our number
one concern, and while it was a difficult
decision, we believe this is the right course of
action,” Davies says.
“While we hope the situation with Covid-19
will have improved by September, there is no
guarantee that the event would be permitted
to go ahead due to the current government
restrictions.
“The government is yet to make any
announcements as to when large gatherings
or events can take place again, and we have
to be realistic. Planning to host a large-scale
event like The Print Show this year is just
not feasible, given the level of uncertainty
as to what situation the UK will be in come
September.
“Therefore, we have decided that the best
course of action would be to postpone both
The Print Show and sister event The Sign
Show until next year, when we hope the worst
of the crisis will have subsided.”
Davies also revealed that The Print Show
has reached an agreement with many of
the companies that had already signed up
to attend in 2020 to instead exhibit at the
rearranged event next year.
“We’re finalising the details with our
exhibitors and we’ll be making a number of
announcements in the coming weeks and
months, but it is fantastic to see this level of
confidence in the show,” Davies says.
“I’ve been touched by the amount of
support our exhibitors have offered and I
will be delighted to welcome them to the
rearranged edition of The Print Show next
year. We remain fully committed to delivering
a quality event that solely focuses on the UK
printing industry. The Print Show is the only
event dedicated to the UK market and as
we emerge from lockdown and build for a
brighter future, we believe our event will play
a key role in this recovery process.”
The Print Show every year directly attracts
the very biggest print and finishing
technology manufacturers from across the
UK commercial print supply chain. These
companies use the show to launch brand
new products that can be seen for the very
first time in the UK, if not the world.
Run by the same team behind key industry
titles Print Monthly and SignLink and their
parent company Link Publishing, the
creativity and drive behind The Print Show
draws on more than 50 years of collective
experience of the print industry.

ASPA & GS1 India sign MoU
- to strengthen Anti-Counterfeiting Eco-Systems using Global Standards.
Realising the magnitude of damage caused
by counterfeiting to the Indian economy,
brands and consumers, Authentication
Solutions Providers’ Association (ASPA) and
GS1 India have joined hands to take the fight
against counterfeiting to the next level in
India, using global standards.
ASPA (Authentication Solutions Providers’
Association) is a self-regulated non-profit
organization that represents the entire
physical and digital authentication solutions
industry. GS1 India, a standards body, is
responsible for administering the use of
global supply chain standards in India that
enable businesses to implement counterfeit
detection and product authentication
solutions to safeguard their supply chains.
The two organisations have signed an MoU
to jointly work towards mainstreaming and
nurturing the anti-counterfeiting ecosystem
by promoting the use of standards based
solutions for the betterment of industry and
consumers, at large.
Counterfeit products across various sectors
in India are causing losses of over INR 1
trillion every year to the government and the
number of counterfeit cases has increased
by nearly 24 percent in 2019 as compared
to 2018. This causes business to lose
brand equity and revenues, besides putting
consumer safety at risk.
According to ASPA Counterfeit Repository
findings Alcohol, FMCG, Pharma, Tobacco,
Agriculture and Automotive are among
the top sectors with the highest number
of counterfeits in 2018 and 2019. During
the COVID 19 pandemic period (between
January to March 2020), more than 150+
cases of counterfeit incidents had been
reported in the media. In March & April 2020,
more than one case per day was reported
related to fake PPE’s kits, sanitizers and
masks.
Jointly, the organisations will be sensitising
stakeholders in this respect and will spread
awareness and motivate brands and
customers to use ‘Smart Consumer’ – an app
launched to empower consumers with digital
product information and is powered by the
national repository of information on retailed
products – DataKart, that is populated
directly by brand owners.
Speaking about the partnership Mr. Nakul
Pasricha, President, Authentication Solution
Providers’ Association (ASPA) said, “We
are committed to build the authentication
eco-systems in the country and enhance
our relationship with other bodies working
in the same space. The authentication
environment will support Government
“make in India” initiative and its image at
global level, where trust is becoming an
especially important factor. We need to
ensure that the “Make in India” products
are genuine, safe, and secure until they are
delivered to the end consumer across the
globe. Involvement and active participation
of all stakeholders is extremely crucial in
this, as a lot of awareness is required at
industry, consumer, and government level.
We are sure that by combining resources
of GS1 India and ASPA, we will add more
momentum to our endeavours in fighting the
menace of counterfeiting and develop the
anti-counterfeiting ecosystem.”
Sharing his views, Mr. S Swaminathan,
COO, GS1 India said, “At GS1 India, we are
constantly working towards overcoming
the blocks in the global supply chain that
prevent visibility and transparency. With this
partnership with ASPA, we aim to further
strengthen our endeavour to address the
ever growing threats presented by counterfeit
products in existing supply chains. The
use of GS1 standards and solutions like
traceability, Smart Consumer app, DataKart,
etc., will help Indian businesses gain trust
of their consumers and trading partners by
seamless sharing of product information.
This would also act as a foundational step
in our journey and empower consumers
to authenticate products using the Smart
Consumer mobile app.
Together ASPA and GS1 India will jointly
work together to create awareness about the
counterfeiting problems and build knowledge
through various tools, including trainings,
publishing of articles, enriching websites,
etc., to drive adoption of global standards for
detecting and controlling counterfeits.

Digitizing Print: The latest launches by
leading players of the Technology
“An update on the latest machines launched in the past six months by leading global digital printing
machinery manufacturers.” - Jacob George
Despite it being a Covid infested world, the advances
made by the digital printing machinery manufacturers
have been interesting in the last six months. In fact
the industry pundits had predicted 2020 to be an
eventful year considering it was the Drupa year and
many launches were expected as well.
We try to look at the various options that have been
made available by different manufacturers during the
first 6 months of 2020.
Kodak and Uteco have
also returned to the
market through the latest
technology updates and
upgrades in the flexible
packaging market. They
have further strengthened
their partnership and
launched the first flexible
packaging printing
machine Sapphire Evo
W that uses Ultrastream
continuous inkjet
technology.

Take Xeikon’s new CX300 as an example. It replaces
the CX3 and provides the option to upgrade to the
CX500. The CX300 is a 330mm format label printing
machine and a single shift operation can provide
over 50,000 square meters of production capacity
per month. The full-colour printing press is equipped
with five printing units, including CMYK and singlechannel
opaque white. Based on the company’s
Cheetah 2.0 technology, and other features include:
printing speed up to 30m/min; printing format 220-
512mm; LED imaging head running at 1200x3600dpi,
and providing image quality equivalent to offset and
gravure printing, allows the operator to evaluate the
status of the printing press remotely in addition to
other features.
HP Indigo 6K and 8K have also been updated
– upgrading the existing digital label printing
technology. The new products launched in the HP
Indigo stable are 6900 and 8000 models. The HP
Indigo 6K digital printing press has been carefully
designed to provide more applications, including
high opacity white for shrink sleeves, and new brands
including silver, fluorescent, invisible red and green
for brand protection applications Inks, as well as
brand-new glazing functions from industry partners
that provide enhanced mechanical durability and
improved performance, improve the characteristics
of labels produced using the “package-ready” label
ecosystem. The new and improved 8000 digital
presses have added similar features, including
increased productivity, reduced waste, and easier
conversion between media types and jobs.
Canon has also upgraded its LabelStream 4000
series, adding optional orange channels, high-opacity
white inks similar to screens, and enhanced usability
to improve production efficiency. The new white ink
channel can achieve an opacity of up to 80% at a
speed of 36m/min in a single pass. The LabelStream

4000 Core unit provides an entry-level option
that can be expanded to meet specific
requirements.
Kodak and Uteco have also returned to the
market through the latest technology updates
and upgrades in the flexible packaging
market. They have further strengthened their
partnership and launched the first flexible
packaging printing machine Sapphire
Evo W that uses Ultrastream continuous
inkjet technology to enter the market. The
two companies previously collaborated
on the development of Sapphire Evo,
which includes Kodak Stream technology
(predecessor of Ultrastream). The first
system that uses Ultrastream technology
and has a print format of 1250mm has been
sold to the market. Based on water-based
inks, Sapphire Evo W has a wide format and
provides a production speed comparable to
traditional analog printers. It can print small
to medium batch orders, achieving a price
advantage comparable to flexo printing, and
can be compared with traditional flexible
packaging printing.
Screen’s PacJet FL830 is a brand new
technology. It is an aqueous inkjet printing
system for flexible packaging that can handle
large-scale production applications. PacJet
FL830 is currently scheduled to be released
around March 2021. PacJet FL830 can
process media up to 830mm at a speed of
75m/min. It can use CMYK and white waterbased
inks that comply with relevant food
safety regulations and print at a resolution of
1200dpi.
Japanese printer manufacturer Miyakoshi
developed MJP30AXF, another waterbased
inkjet printer that prints on flexible
packaging. Due to the use of water-based
inkjet and its related advantages in food
safety, the company has determined that
MJP30AXF is particularly suitable for food
packaging applications. In May 2020, the first
MJP30AXF was installed in Beta customers
in Japan. The MJP20W/30W model is a new
UV inkjet digital printing system for flexible
packaging applications. These objectives are
based on Miyakoshi’s initial success with the
MJP13LXV UV inkjet digital label printer.
Memjet’s technology is likely to be the basis
of many inkjet digital flexible packaging
printing systems, especially its DuraFlex
platform. DuraFlex is a modular, single-pass
printing system designed to combine speed,
simplicity, and affordability with enhanced
durability, A4 and A3 widened four-colour
printheads, high-speed data paths, and
modules that control all functions of the
printhead. This will be the core of the nextgeneration
MVZ printing machine of Italian
printing machine manufacturer Rigoli, which
has a higher printing speed and can be
directly integrated into many new packaging
lines.
It is generally expected that Landa will
finally realize its commitment to the flexible
packaging printing market in terms of
printing speed and format, because many
people predict that its 1000mm format W10
will become its cornerstone that supports
1050mm web size and can print 4-8 colours
at high speed.
Well, to put it softly, there seems to be a
whole lot of development that we can see
in the arena considering the brakes that
has been put on the industry by the Corona
pandemic! As they rightly say, come what
may, the show must go on.

South Yorkshire to boost links with India
- plans for new institute of technology, to create an ‘MIT for the North’.
South Yorkshire has ambitions to create
an innovation revolution in advanced
manufacturing and technology that could
strengthen its links with India, if the UK
government moves forward with its plans to
create an ‘MIT for the North’ in the region.
Referring to a scheme which would be similar
to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT), South Yorkshire is
planning to become home to a world-leading
institution in the north to rival Oxford and
Cambridge, which could help the region to
further advance its work, particularly with
Indian companies.
welding, robotics and automation, and would
complement the work of an MIT.
Kevin McCole, Managing Director at the
UK India Business Council (UKIBC), said:
“No doubt there are great opportunities for
UK and Indian companies to successfully
collaborate, particularly when the UK’s
advanced technology and expertise
in innovation is paired with India’s
manufacturing capabilities and growing
market. To truly succeed in a world where
manufacturing is increasingly knowledgeintensive,
India will need to futureproof
important areas such as digital and
technology, higher education, and advanced
manufacturing. The presence of the new MIT
in the Sheffield City Region would support
all of these key areas, thereby boosting the
region’s attractiveness to Indian businesses
and helping to attract talent from around the
world.”
South Yorkshire is being championed for
the new MIT because it is already home to
the Advanced Manufacturing and Research
Centre (AMRC), which provides worldleading
capabilities in machining, casting,

82% of employees expected to return to the office in 12-18 months,
Xerox Future of Work Survey reveals
600 IT leaders across the world disclose post-COVID-19 priorities in support of a flexible
work environment.
A new global business survey commissioned
by Xerox Holdings Corporation shows
an estimated 82% of the workforce in
respondents’ organizations will have returned
to the workplace in 12-18 months’ time,
on average. In preparation for a return,
companies are investing in new resources to
support a hybrid remote / in-office workforce,
with 56% increasing technology budgets
and 34% planning to speed their digital
transformation as a result of COVID-19.
The Xerox Future of Work Survey, conducted
by the independent research firm Vanson
Bourne, polled 600 IT decision makers
including senior C-level professionals, whose
organizations have at least 500 employees.
Respondents reported challenges caused
by the sudden transition to remote work,
with 72% citing they were not fully prepared
from a technology perspective. In addition
to technology (29%), the biggest pain points
during the required work from home period
were communication breakdown across
teams/employees (26%) and maintaining
focus (25%).
“While there is no doubt the COVID-19
pandemic has changed the way we work,
our research found that over time many
companies plan to have most employees
back in an office environment. This could
be for a variety of reasons, including
communication, speed of decision-making
and talent development,” said Steve
Bandrowczak, Xerox president and chief
operations officer. “At the same time, the
sudden shutdown and ongoing hybrid work
environment has exposed technology gaps
that require new or additional investment in
the coming months.”
Key survey findings and Xerox takeaways
include:
Businesses plan to return most
employees to the office, though
expanded remote work policies
are here to stay.
Prior to work from home requirements being
imposed, 33% of respondents said network/
data security and privacy was their biggest
concern with a remote workforce; 24% cited
employee productivity followed by 16% citing
technology infrastructure. These concerns,
coupled with the belief held by 95% of
respondents that in-person communication
is important for personal development
and assessing talent, indicate widespread
remote work will not replace more traditional
workspaces.
However, now that businesses are more
comfortable with remote work, attitudes and
policies of C-suite leaders and IT decision
makers are shifting. Furthermore, 58% plan
to change their work from home policy
within the next year, highlighting the need for
companies to support a hybrid workforce.
Our takeaway: Employees may not be
going back to the office all at once — or even
in the same capacity as before — but the
need for organizations to support a hybrid
workforce is here for the foreseeable future.
Sudden stay-at-home orders
quickly revealed technology
gaps.
The rapid transition to remote work was
difficult for most businesses, with only
28% saying they were fully prepared and
29% citing technology as their biggest
pain point. With regards to technology
specifically, respondents said their top
challenges were remote IT support (35%),
inadequate workflow solutions (27%), lack
of communications and collaboration tools
(22%) and lack of cloud-based solutions
(10%). 85% of business leaders also missed
the accessibility and ease of use of their
office printers.
Our takeaway: To mitigate against
future disruptions, such as the rapid
transition to remote work resulting from
COVID-19, companies will look to invest in
new technologies and seek added capability
from existing tools to accelerate their
processes digital transformation.
Technology purchasing priorities
are shifting to better support
employees.
As a result of technology gaps uncovered by
having a mostly remote workforce, 70% of
IT decision makers globally are reevaluating
their budget spend, with companies
increasing investment in remote technology
resources (55%) or a hybrid of remote and
in-office resources (40%). The pandemic also
has businesses prioritizing investments in
cloud-based software (65%), remote IT (63%)
support and collaboration software (52%).
Hardware such as laptops and printers were
another important consideration.
Our Takeaway: COVID-19 is feeding
digital transformation plans and companies
are placing a renewed focus on meeting
employees’ needs with both hardware and
software.
Methodology
The survey of 600 respondents located
across the world was conducted by
independent research firm Vanson Bourne
in May 2020. Respondents included IT
decision makers (including senior C-level
professionals), all from organizations with
at least 500 employees across a range of
sectors, including business and professional
services, retail, health care, financial services,
and travel and hospitality.

The IP Journey of Pinyapel: From Creation to Going Global
As part of the global pursuit to save the earth, the packaging industry, the biggest contributor to
the plastic economy, is given a tall order: do away with plastics, completely and immediately.
In each passing day, the global plastic
pollution problem continues to grow more
worrisome notwithstanding the widespread
adoption of policies and emergence of
a slew of solutions in the aims of at least
cutting our current production of 300 million
tonnes, as estimated by the United Nations
Environment. Failing to stem this production
level will only accelerate the pace of climate
change, and cause our oceans to be filled
with more plastics than fish come 2050,
experts have warned.
The task is overwhelming but not impossible.
The Design Center of the Philippines fervently
believed this when it took on a yearlong
research to convert pineapple leaves into a
specialty paper for food packaging purposes,
a product that gained global attention when it
bagged last October the iconic Wood Pencil
at the D&AD Impact Awards in recognition
of its Pinyapel Project’s potential to have a
significant impact on the environment while
maintaining product sustainability.
“The ambition of the Pinyapel is to
replace the take-out food containers while
maximizing the use of agricultural waste to
improve the livelihood of farmers. We want
Pinyapel to be part of the compost bin that
can be used to fertilize the soil, make it
richer. So instead of continuing the traditional
economic practice of taking out from the
earth, we are able to give back to the earth,
making as a responsible practice to preserve
the earth for future generations,” Design
Center Executive Director Rhea O. Matute
said.
Public-private partnerships as key
As early as at the ideation stage, Design
Center had mapped out ways to succeed in
commercialization.
The attached agency of the Department of
Trade and Industry identified the supply and
value chain for the project to ensure that
there are ready adaptors of the Pinyapel, as
well as the sustainability of its development.
To this end, the Design Center forged a
tripartite memorandum of agreement with
the CDO Handmade Paper Crafts Co.
22 June 2020
and Ideatechs Packaging Corp. who were
identified as crucial in the materialization of
Pinyapel. The agency also partnered with
Nature’s Fresh Pineapples, Inc. for the supply
of raw materials.
“Pinyapel development seeks to inspire and
encourage government agencies and the
private sectors to collaborate in order to have
commercialization opportunities through
adoption of developed processes and
products. Partnerships could also pave the
way for the implementation of circular design
strategies such as choosing inputs, thinking
locally, extending product’s life and closing
the loop,” Matute said.
Central to the development of the
Pinyapel paper is the corrugating machine
of Ideatechs Packaging Corp. The
machine provided the paper, which has
thermoformable property, with heat and
pressure to turn it into a usable material.
Amid limited resources, the agency was able
to speed up its research and development,
and even managed to produce three
formulations for Pinyapel, thanks mostly to its
partners who allowed Design Center to use
their factories and equipment.
Capturing value thru utility
models
Following the successful experimentation, the
specialty paper was ready for the market. But
before its full roll out, Design Center signed
up its Pinyapel for protection as a utility
model.
“Pinyapel was registered as a utility model to
protect the process and product generated
by the collaborative effort. As a government
agency and an Innovation and Technology
Support Office partner of the Intellectual
Property Office of the Philippines, it is
important to register the development not just
for protection but more importantly because
disclosure of the step-by-step process in
our IP document could spark innovation
that would inspire anyone with technical
know-how to innovate further so the cycle of
innovation will be continuous,” Matute added.
The Pinyapel project, along with the other Wood Pencil
awardees, will go through D&AD’s 12-month accelerator
program where they are given consultancy, mentoring,
masterclasses, development grants, and access to a
creative, peer-driven network for a speedier product
development.
The Design Center has been part of
IPOPHL’s growing ITSO network since 2012,
committed to fostering a culture that thrives
in design creativity, value creation, and
innovation. It has filed at IPOPHL over 230
utility models and industrial designs.
Pinyapel eyes transition to patent
“Although protection for a utility model is
shorter, it is generally cheaper to obtain and
maintain and has less stringent patentability
requirements. Utility models provide micro,
small, and medium entrepreneurs a low-cost
and easy entry point to go global,” Matute
said.
Nonetheless, the Design Center envisions
further upgrading its product, with hopes of
seeing it registered as a patent. This is in
line with its strategy of utilizing all possible
tools in the IP system. In fact, last November,
days after it bagged the Wood Pencil, Design
Center filed at the IPOPHL to apply protection
for the “pinyapel” word mark.
“Further development is ongoing for Pinyapel
and at the same time we will be launching
new developments on different materials by
next year,” the Matute said.

Luxury Box matches whisky’s regal roots
The packaging by Pollard Boxes conveys the luxuriousness and premium nature of the new whisky,
ensuring high impact on-shelf and delivering a superior opening experience for the consumer.
A striking presentation box produced by
Pollard Boxes is helping to underline the
significance of the latest addition to the ‘King
of Whisky’ Royal Salute’s permanent range.
The new Treasured Blend is the first 25 year
old expression in the Royal Salute portfolio.
Created by Master Blender Sandy Hyslop,
it has been inspired by the Crown Jewels
of England, bringing together precious and
powerful whiskies first laid down a quarter
of a century ago, and today fit for modern
royalty.
The key requirement for the packaging was
to convey the luxuriousness and premium
nature of the new whisky, ensuring high
impact on-shelf and delivering a superior
opening experience for the consumer.
The box is manufactured in a book cloth
material combined with intricate fine gold foil
patterns and text throughout. The special
double door design incorporates two highly
detailed metallised labels on the front and
then opens to reveal a stunning panoramic
illustration from Royal Salute collaborator and
fine artist Kristjana S. Williams. This depicts
the animals of the Royal Menagerie attending
a coronation celebration surrounded by
the precious Royal Regalia at the Tower of
London.
The open weaves in the book cloth required
complete attention to detail during the foiling
process by Pollards’ expert in-house team.
A similarly high level of technical skill was
required in the production of the five-door
design, combining traditional production
methods with the latest automated
equipment.
The box also incorporates Pollard’s unique
FOTL (Front Opening, Top Loading)
technology. This provides a faster and
more efficient packing process by allowing
the bottle to be placed into the box while
remaining in a case of six for onward delivery.
The lid is then locked into place, enabling the
box to be opened from the front for effective
display on the retail shelf. Vacuum formings
in the lid and base hold the bottle firmly in
place throughout the distribution chain.
“The 25 Year Old Treasured Blend continues
Royal Salute’s legacy of distinction for
elegantly crafted Scotch whisky,” commented
Richard Neil, Project Manager, Chivas
Brothers.
“The presentation box delivers exactly the
exceptional quality of appearance and finish
required to reflect the premium nature of the
whisky to our global consumers.”
Royal Salute was first created as a gift for
the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953
and has since been the official partner of
all ceremonial royal gun salutes fired at the
Tower of London.

As I knew him - RIP PVN ‘Saar’!
I have been in touch with Mr. PV Narayanan
(Former Director, IIP & Chairman of SIES
School of Packaging) for more than two
decades now and to hear that Covid has
taken its toll on one of my closest associates
leaves a painful mark, deep down in my
heart.
PVN ‘Saar’, as I personally used to call
him, was the first editor of a packaging
magazine titled ‘PLC - Packaging Labeling
& Converting’ that we published under the
PRESSIdeas umbrella for a few years way
back in 2009. In fact, it was PVN saar who
suggested us to address this particular
segment of the industry through the
magazine while he was working with SIES
School of Packaging. He had an uncanny
ability to reach to people in a deep and
positive way. I remember him being closely
working with the India Label Show, before it
was taken over and renamed as Label Expo
India by Tarsus. He was of the opinion that
‘knowledge disseminated’ is what remains
and so did he – live by his words and spent
his entire life educating and mentoring!
Students and their communities were of great
importance for him and wanted corporates
to generously contribute to the education
system; as he passionately put up an award
from PRESSIdeas at the SIES School of
packaging.
An excellent speaker and eloquent
personality, PVN Saar will remain close to my
heart till I live. 79 years well spent sir, Salute.

Aditya Flexipack becomes first Converter in India with BOBST AluBond
Kanpur based Aditya buys BOBST VISION K5 equipped with AluBond for production of High Barrier and
High Adhesion CPP and BOPP Films.
Kanpur-based Aditya Flexipack, one of
the leading flexible packaging products
manufacturers in India, has purchased a
VISION K5 1650mm which will be installed
in their state of the art green field project
focused on qualitative improvements &
backward integration; the facility is spread
across 19 acres and will be one of the largest
converting facilities under one roof. The new
metallizer is equipped with BOBST AluBond
for the production of high barrier and high
adhesion CPP/BOPP films and BOBST
Hawkeye pinhole detector.
The VISION K5 will be the first metallizer
for Aditya Flexipack after they decided to
expand their business to bring the metallizing
process in-house. To meet the requirements
of their customers, Aditya required a machine
which could produce high barrier CPP and
BOPP with high adhesion and high dyne level
retention.
Established almost 20 years ago, Aditya
Flexipack is known for their high quality,
customer focused products and sustainable
& safe working practices which have resulted
in many long-term relationships with its
valued customers.
The BOBST AluBond process which is fast
becoming the standard metallizing process
in the market for polyolefin based PP
substrates was perfect for their requirements.
AluBond greatly increases metal adhesion on
the most commonly used substrates; metal
adhesion values of up to 5N/15mm can be
achieved. In addition AluBond has been
shown to significantly increase dyne level
retention which translates in improved ink
wettability during printing and may eliminate
the need for an additional surface treatment
boost i.e. corona refresh prior to converting.
Apart from providing excellent adhesion
levels on all substrates, when AluBond is
applied to CPP and BOPP films, it provides
enhancement of oxygen (OTR) and water
vapour (WVTR) barrier performance. AluBond

Flint Group Packaging Inks’ publishes latest whitepaper
The whitepaper unveils the new four pillar approach to sustainability.
the environmental impact associated with
their use.
Flint Group Packaging Inks, one of the
largest consumables suppliers to the global
packaging industry, has identified four
strategic pillars key to successfully achieving
its sustainability ambitions.
Outlined in a new whitepaper published
by Flint Group, the four pillars set out a
programme of objectives and milestones that
align with the company’s vision of realising a
truly circular economy within the packaging
industry.
Doug Aldred, President Global Packaging
Inks said: “The new four pillar approach
provides our Sustainability Task Force with
clear areas of focus. Sustainability is a
huge topic for the industry but there isn’t a
single defined path that results in success.
This is a journey that we share with our
customers, suppliers and stakeholders and
we encourage a shared commitment to bring
about change. We are investing our time to
focus on ways that we can support a circular
economy in packaging and look forward
to working with the wider industry on these
efforts going forward.”
The four pillars include Ethical Management,
Reduced Ecological Impact, Responsibly
Built Products and Designing for Circularity.
Setting out a clear framework for global
company-wide development, the Ethical
Management pillar incorporates a range
of audits and standards that Flint Group
Packaging Inks has implemented for both
the company and its suppliers to adhere to.
In addition, it details new policies which are
needed and that address human rights, antidiscrimination,
green engineering and waste
management, as well as anti-corruption and
equal opportunities practices.
Reduced Ecological Impact includes a
programme of targets for the business to
meet in relation to energy consumption,
greenhouse gas emissions, water
consumption and landfill waste. It also
outlines Flint Group Packaging Inks’
commitment to achieving ISO14001, the
international standard for an effective
environmental management system. The
XtraMile programme, an initiative to help
printers boost connectivity, reduce waste
and drive operational efficiency, is also
incorporated.
The third pillar of Flint Group Packaging Inks’
sustainability strategy, Responsibly Built
Products, addresses the building blocks of
ink formulation, regulatory compliance and
Mr. Paul Winstanley, Sr. Directory Technology
& Innovation for Packaging Inks EMEA
commented, “Our technical teams are
developing sustainable ink formulations
using non-fossil fuel based raw material
sources that do not, for example, compete
with food resources or contribute to
deforestation. We have also commercialised
a range of mono-solvent inks for gravure
applications and have developed solutions
for both flexo and gravure applications
that are compliant with compostability
standards to meet the increased demand for
compostable packaging.”
The fourth strategic pillar addresses the
design of inks and coatings for the circular
economy in support of the development of
fully recyclable packaging solutions with
minimal waste creation. By working closely
with the recycling industry, the company is
developing inks that are easier to recycle,
including new water-based and low VOC
inks.
The whitepaper is available to download from
the Flint Group Packaging Inks’ website.

Holograms to secure global alcohol revenues
New tax stamp holograms welcomed in battle to secure alcohol excise
revenues – Goa and Rajasthan to introduce holographic tax stamps.
Plans for new holographic tax stamps in
Asia show the technology continues to be
an effective device in the battle to secure
global alcohol revenues, according to an
international trade body.
The International Hologram Manufacturers
Association (IHMA) was commenting on
moves by Goa and Rajasthan in India to
introduce a new excise policy for 2020-21,
which will feature holographic tax stamps
as a central plank of measures to protect
alcohol revenues.
This would bring the total number of states
in India adopting tax stamps to 25 as the
country continues to fight the criminals
who trade in illicit alcohol across the Asia
subcontinent.
Excise duty on alcohol is a critical source of
government revenue while providing way of
controlling and limiting consumption, says
the IHMA.
However, illicit smuggling and counterfeiting
cost treasuries billions of dollars a year
in lost revenue. And the cost is not just a
financial one affecting governments - drinks
manufacturers can see brands tarnished,
revenues tumble and market capitalisation
dented through the counterfeiting of their
products.
In Goa, which currently has no alcohol
tax stamps, liquor prices have risen 50%
since April 2020, as have excise duties on
Indian foreign liquor sales. There, officials
are finalising proposals to introduce a
holographic tax stamp, which will be
applied to each bottle of alcohol to assist in
authentication.
In North West India, Rajasthan state is
planning to re-introduce alcohol excise
stamps after a 10 year absence in a move to
tackle concerns over increases in inter-state
smuggling and sales of illicit liquor.
Tax stamps serve two purposes according
to the IHMA. One is to provide a record of
payment of tax while the other is to provide
evidence that the stamp - and hence the
product to which it is affixed - is genuine.
Dr Paul Dunn, chair of the global trade
body, said it’s clear that the news from India
shows that governments and agencies
around the world continue to rely on and
value holograms as an effective, reliable and
dynamic security solution.
Dr Paul Dunn, chair of the IHMA, and an example of a
holographic tax stamp on a bottle of alcohol
“It’s apparent that the benefits of
holographic-based tax stamp programmes
are welcomed by both suppliers of
components, products and systems to the
drinks sector and officials with responsibility
for securing tax revenues,” he said.
“While holographic tax stamps are widely
accepted and effective authentication
devices, there is no better opportunity during
the current pandemic for governments
and treasuries to act decisively to secure
alcohol excise revenues by continuing to use
the technology as an integral part of their
strategies.”
The use of well-designed and properly
deployed authentication solutions, as
advocated by the ISO12931 standard,
enables examiners to verify the authenticity
of a legitimate product, differentiating it from
fake products coming from counterfeiting
hot spots in Asia and eastern Europe. Even
those that carry a ‘fake’ authentication feature
can be distinguished from the genuine item
if that item carries a carefully thought-out
authentication solution.
The tax stamp standard ISO22282, which
assists tax authorities to improve compliance
with excise tax regulations by providing
guidance on tax stamp procurement,
construction, security, issuance and
examination, references the uses of
holograms for tax stamp.
30 June 2020
IHMA represents more than 90 of the world’s
leading hologram companies. Members
include the leading producers and converters
of holograms for banknote security, anticounterfeiting,
brand protection, packaging,
graphics and other commercial applications
around the world, and actively cooperate to
maintain the highest professional, security
and quality standards.

Highly efficient children books production with asterPRO Full Cycle
“Children’s literature is in big demand and we had the need to increase our productivity while maintaining
the high quality of sewing of the aster machines”. – Mrs. Liu, Hongbo Haotian
Hongbo Haotian is a large-scale Chinese
printing company, established in 2010
in Beijing with the goal of servicing the
metropolitan area of the capital city where
publishing houses are flourishing.
Hongbo’s main products are high-end art
and photo albums and children’s books,
the latter a strong and thriving market in
China. The company, already a customer
of Meccanotecnica since 2014 with an
asterEVO book sewing machine, decided to
increase its production capacity for thread
sewn books with an asterPRO Full Cycle to
meet the increasing market demand in this
segment.
The children’s book segment in 2019
accounts for 26.5% of China’s total book
retail market, according to Beijing-based
OpenBook, a clearinghouse for publishing
statistics. The segment expanded 18.5%
compared to 2018, confirming a double-digit
growth streak.
Whether this growth trajectory is due to the
sheer number of people under 18 (about
370 million and counting) and newborns
(14.65 million in 2019) or its rising middle
class (around 400 million people) with higher
disposable income to spend on education
and reading, it is seemingly unstoppable.
Challenge
“In the last years we are witnessing a big
growth for thread sewn children books,”
says Mrs. Liu, Managing Director of Hongbo
Haotian.
“Children’s literature is in big demand and
we had the need to increase our productivity
while maintaining the high quality of sewing
of the aster machines”.
Solution
Hongbo Haotian decided to invest in an
aster- PRO with Full Cycle technology that
allows the sewing of books without the blind/
lock stitch. The investment decision has been
guided by 3 main reasons:
1. The Full Cycle Technology allows
increasing production efficiency, saving
costs and improving profitability,
compared to traditional sewing
machines.
2. This technology also improves the
daily output, increasing productivity
especially for books with a low number
of signatures.
3. Aster machines are easy to use and
having operators already trained in
using them have also played its role in
the decision.
Result
“In only 5 months after installations, we have
sewn 20 million signatures and produced
millions of books”, says Mrs. Liu. “This
proves the great reliability of the system that
has fulfilled our expectations”.
Business benefits
• Highly reliable binding (thread sewing)
• Revenue increase (more productivity)
• Cost savings (higher efficiency)
• Ease-of-use (aster machines)
• Sewing quality (no thermal fusion)

IDERA: Xeikon and Flint Group bring digital print to the corrugated industry
A fully integrated and comprehensive digital platform setting corrugated packaging apart.
Xeikon and Flint group have announced
the launch of IDERA, a brand-new digital
solutions platform for corrugated packaging
converters. One of the cornerstones of this
platform is a post-print, single-pass printing
press. This press uses certified food-safe
water-based inks on coated and uncoated
corrugated sheets up to 1.6 m wide x 2.8
m long (5’ 3” wide x 9’2” long) at up to
150 linear m/min (492 ft/min). It is an ideal
solution for a corrugated box market with
decreasing lot sizes, shorter lead times,
and ever-increasing demand for high quality
packaging. IDERA will deliver higher print
quality than flexography and enable printing
of both short and long runs with all the
benefits of a digital print-on-demand solution,
including reduced waste, Xeikon states.
With a much smaller and more environmentfriendly
footprint, IDERA also has the ability
to customize and version. From September
onwards, the IDERA solution will be available
at the Global Innovation Center in Lier,
Belgium for customer evaluation and testing.
“It is no secret that we are seeing rapid
changes in the behavioural patterns of
consumers, brands and retailers,” explains
Sebastien Stabel, Market Segment Manager
Carton Packaging. The exponential growth
of e-commerce and the increasing pressure
on sustainability are underlying forces that
drive creative innovation in the digitization
of packaging to higher levels of productivity.
Ever rising consumer expectations for instant,
unique and entertaining products continue
to set the bar higher within the supply chain
for decreased lead times and even faster
delivery.
Stabel believes there is more change
yet to come. In its May 2019 study ‘No
ordinary disruption – winning with new
models in packaging 2030’, the consulting
firm McKinsey warns, “This is the time for
companies in the packaging industry to
buckle up and get ready. They have less
than 2 years to prepare”. With that in mind,
companies need to change their focus with
an ‘intuition reset’ and review their business
models and markets. Migrating from
corrugated post-print to digital corrugated
printing is the optimal way for forwardthinking
businesses to set themselves up
for future success. Xeikon’s IDERA solution
provides the winning combination of a bestin-class,
single-pass digital press for the
corrugated sector, food-safety patented ink
technology, and an open architecture system
for third-party integration.”
To develop IDERA, Xeikon relied on its long
established in-house digital expertise and on
the experience and manufacturing footprint
of its parent company, Flint Group. As the
number one supplier of inks for corrugated
packaging, Flint has a deep understanding
of the corrugated market. Stabel continues,
“We are working closely with Flint Group,
our partners, and most importantly our
customers, to customize the software,
hardware and ink sets and address more
closely the needs of the corrugated market
in Europe and North America. At the same
time, we add our digital expertise to what is
already a solid base product.”
Lode Deprez, VP Digital Inks & Imaging
Technology adds, “In our R&D Competence
Center for digital inks, our engineers develop,
formulate and produce our own highperforming,
food-safe, water-based inks. This
includes our new and patented technology
32 June 2020
pressideas/ plc
used for pigment dispersion that guarantees
the best performance and a cost-efficient
solution.
Key benefits of Xeikon’s IDERA platform
for corrugated packaging printers and
converters:
• High throughput with a post-print,
single-pass printing press. Ready to
print on uncoated and coated boards
• Xeikon developed food safety compliant
water-based inkjet inks to drive print
performance and cost
• An open ecosystem that works together
with various best-in-class partners –
peripheral equipment, workflow, camera
inspection, and more – to get to the
best integrated solution
• A true digital transformation capability
supported by Xeikon’s X-800 workflow
for corrugated packaging
• Color management and profiling tools
as well as integration with third-party
manufacturing and MIS software
Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Vice President
of Marketing, states, “With more than 30
years of innovation and experience in digital
printing, we are still leading the way. Xeikon
is recognized as an advisor in many key
markets, such as graphic arts and labels,
and now in the corrugated market. Xeikon
is a true technology-agnostic advisor in the
digital transformation that print manufacturing
processes are undergoing. We are excited
to be bringing Xeikon and Flint Group
knowledge and expertise to the corrugated
market with IDERA and our broad range of
consulting and advisory services.”
Natural cosmetic ingredients gaining popularity
Natural ingredients with antibacterial and antiviral qualities are the most sought after.
The coronavirus pandemic is raising demand
for natural ingredients from the personal
care industry. The use of such ingredients
in cosmetic & personal care products is
increasing, whilst consumers are buying
natural & organic products to improve their
personal immunity. Ecovia Intelligence
(formerly known as Organic Monitor) expects
demand to remain buoyant after the current
crisis.
Australian companies are reporting a surge
in demand for lemon myrtle, which is used
in hand sanitizers and cleaning products.
Australian Natural Products, the largest
producer, is planting 180,000 new lemon
myrtle and anise myrtle trees to ramp up
production.
Tea tree oil, well-known for its antibacterial
and antiviral properties, is also experiencing
a coronavirus boost. It is used in a wide
range of personal care and home care
products. Based in New South Wales, Gelair
has developed a line of tea tree oil-based
cleaning products for the maritime industry.
Virus fears are leading commercial ships
and cruise liners to use Gelair products to
decontaminate ducted ventilation systems.
Aloe vera, already established in the personal
care industry, is also experiencing high
demand. The use of aloe vera has extended
from companies to consumers making
hand sanitizers at home. Seeing the shift in
purchasing behaviour, the American supplier
Desert Harvest has started producing
hand sanitizers for the first time. Amyris, a
producer of sustainable ingredients, has
also launched natural
hand sanitizers under
its Pipette brand.
The natural essential
oils company EO
Products has increased
production of its hand
sanitizers 16-fold since
the virus outbreak.
Other natural
ingredients in high
demand include
eucalyptus oil, propolis,
and oregano. Asian
ingredient suppliers
are reporting a spike in
demand for eucalyptus
oil. In Indonesia, the
Agriculture Ministry
is actively using
eucalyptus oil to help
stop the transmission of
the coronavirus. It has
developed ointments,
balms, inhalers and diffusers.
The popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) is also
continuing during the coronavirus crisis. CBD
is featured in many new product launches,
including hand sanitizers, creams, lotions
and balms. The UK online retailer Alphagreen
is reporting a doubling of interest in CBDbased
products since the virus outbreak.
Consumers are buying CBD products to help
give them relieve from anxiety, insomnia and
pain.
Many natural & organic food retailers are
reporting a sales surge during the current
crisis. Consumers are turning to natural
& health products to improve their overall
health and wellness, as well as disease
prevention. With COVID-19 changing the
way we meet and clean, expect to see more
natural ingredients in the products we use.
Sustainable Cosmetics Summit
The growing use of natural / green materials
in cosmetic & personal care products
is regularly featured at the Sustainable
Cosmetics Summit. The next editions of this
executive summit will be in New York (28-30th
September) and Paris (2-4th November).

Constantia Flexibles is among the ‘50
Sustainability & Climate Leaders 2020’
Being part of the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders campaign is an integral part of the
Company’s sustainability strategy.
As a signatory of the New
Plastics Economy “Global
Commitment”, Constantia
Flexibles pledged that
all its packaging will be
recyclable by 2025.
This year, Constantia Flexibles has been selected
as one of 50 global companies to take part in an
international sustainability and climate initiative,
initiated by the TBD media group. This initiative
includes videos of and promotes companies that are
pioneers in the field of sustainability and is hosted by
Bloomberg’s digital network.
“More sustainability” along the entire production
supply chain always has been a priority for Constantia
Flexibles. The presentation of the “more sustainable”
product line EcoLamin 2019, the opening of Ecoflex,
the first plant in the world producing recyclable
flexible packaging only, as well as the ambitious
target to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions
by 2050, are just some examples of the Company’s
leadership in the field of sustainability.
Globally and across all industries, Climate Change
and Sustainability have grown in significance.
The importance of action was also recently
communicated by UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres: “The natural environment is deteriorating
at an alarming rate: sea levels are rising; ocean
acidification is accelerating; the last four years have
been the warmest on record; one million plant and
animal species are at risk of extinction, and land
degradation continues unchecked.”
Constantia Flexibles, the world’s third largest
producer of flexible packaging solutions, takes these
worrying developments very seriously. Alexander
Baumgartner, CEO of Constantia Flexibles: “We as
human beings and even more so as companies, have
a duty to fulfil which is to leave the planet at least in
the same shape and state it was when we came for
the next generations. Our participation in the initiative
50 Sustainability and Climate Leaders is a further
measure for us to fulfil this duty. In the video we are
demonstrating how companies worldwide can also
make their contribution.”
Being part of the 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders
campaign is an integral part of the Company’s
sustainability strategy focusing on the long-term.
With the reach of Bloomberg’s digital network and
the close collaboration of the United Nations in the
campaign, the Company wants to prove what is
possible. Peaking in an exclusive conference hosted
by the UN – planned to take place in September 2020
in New York –Constantia Flexibles will engage with the
other campaign participants to showcase its strive for
a more sustainable future. And the list of Constantia
Flexibles’ activities for a better future is extensive.
Science Based, ambitious targets
Since 2005, Constantia Flexibles has been measuring
its’ direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and Scope
2) as well as the indirect emissions (Scope 3) coming
from upstream and downstream value chain activities.
Key Notes :

pressideas/ plc
Constantia Flexibles’ goal is to decrease
greenhouse gas emissions by 24% by 2030
and by 49% by 2050 from a 2015 base-year.
Measures to reach the target include
increasing the share of purchased electricity
coming from renewable resources, energy
optimization, as well as decreasing indirect
emissions deriving from the value chain, e.g.
from purchased raw materials. A minus of
10% had already been achieved until 2018.
The greenhouse gas emission reduction
target was also officially approved by
the Science Based Targets Initiative.
Targets adopted by companies to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions are considered
“science-based” if they are in line with the
level of decarbonization required to keep
the global temperature increase below two
degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial
temperatures.
“Setting this ambitious target in line with
climate science demonstrates our dedication
to play our part in international efforts to limit
global temperature rise and take action to
combat climate change”, says Baumgartner.
Recyclable packaging
As a signatory of the New Plastics Economy
“Global Commitment”, Constantia Flexibles
pledged that all its packaging will be
recyclable by 2025. Today, the Company
stands at 60% recyclable packaging.
One solution to reach 100% is Constantia
Flexibles’ innovative packaging product line,
EcoLam. EcoLam is lightweight, and its’
OPE/PE structure is fully recyclable since it is
a mono-material. Of course, it also provides
all the oxygen and moisture barrier in order
to protect goods. The sustainable solution
is produced at the Constantia Ecoflex
Ahmedabad plant, in Gujarat, India, which
is the first plant in the world producing only
recyclable flexible packaging.
Furthermore, Constantia Flexibles is a
founding member of CEFLEX (A Circular
Economy for Flexible Packaging), a
collaborative project of a European
consortium of companies with the vision
of an established collection, sorting and
reprocessing economy developed for postconsumer
flexible packaging across Europe.
Certified sustainability
In 2018, Constantia Flexibles’ largest plant,
Constantia Teich in Austria was the first
European company to be certified according
to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s (ASI)
Performance Standard for environmental,
social and governance performance. In 2019,
Constantia Teich successfully completed
the audit in accordance with ASI’s Chain
of Custody Standard, which complements
the ASI Performance Standard and sets out
requirements for the creation of a Chain
of Custody (CoC) for material, including
ASI aluminium. This means that the plant
meets the industry’s highest sustainability
standards, which cover governmental,
environmental as well as social elements.

Fujifilm inspires Indian PSPs with free Acuity book
Releases 92 pages of inspiration, application ideas and technical intelligence – the new guide to Fujifilm
Acuity for Print service providers.
Fujifilm India has released a 92-page book
packed with inspiration and motivation for
print service providers considering their next
move. The expansive guide focuses on the
Fujifilm Acuity flatbed printer series - a natural
and versatile choice for forward-thinking
businesses.
Available to download free of charge, with
hard copies distributed on request, the
book begins by outlining the technical
advancements of the Acuity followed by an
inspirational insight into potential applications
together with real-life customer case studies.
It looks at the market for high-quality sign
and display work - such as safety and
social distancing signage where demand is
currently increasing - while also exploring the
profitable vertical markets of interior decor,
metal decoration, packaging prototypes,
membrane switch graphic overlays,
thermoformed plastics and creative effects.
Not only is it increasingly important for PSPs
to consider diversification into new markets
like these, it can be an exciting proposition
thanks to the versatility offered by digital
inkjet technology and inks. Compared to
screen and litho printing, digital inkjet delivers
an equivalent level of output quality with
superior ease-of-use and flexibility. Acuity
users may also discover environmental
benefits over other technologies thanks to
the system’s extensive material compatibility.
S.M. Ramprasad, Executive Vice President
at Fujifilm India Pvt. Ltd, comments: “We are
all of course familiar with printing for retail
display and exhibitions, but as those markets
are in a period of emergency, the forwardthinking
PSP needs to look beyond their
regular everyday print production and explore
new opportunities.
“Sustainability is another important
consideration for PSPs. For example, the
Fujifilm Acuity is ideal for the production of
polyethylene banners and polypropylene as
a PVC alternative, which will be an increasing
requirement for big brands wishing to go
PVC-free as part of their own environmental
initiatives.”
It is expected that the Acuity book – In
particular the impressive hard copy edition
– will provide valuable information and ideas
for customers as much as for PSPs.
Ramprasad summarises: “Serving both
as a visual guide full of application images
and ideas, and also as a more detailed
technical resource, the Acuity book is a great
source of inspiration. Not only for you as a
printer, but for your customers who might
themselves be looking for new ways in which
digital print might open new opportunities,
greener production or cost-effective options.
The Fujifilm Acuity book is incredibly useful
and informative, and we’d like all of our
customers to make sure they download a
copy and keep it at hand as a resource.”
The 92-page Acuity book is available for free
download at the company website. Hardcopy
versions are available by request from
Fujifilm.
