District Awards For outstanding service to the district, the Silver Honor Medal and the Outstanding Consulting Rosarian were awarded to Steve Pyrak. Dr. Jim Englert received the Outstanding Judge award. Terri Lady and Jerry Dolph were presented the distinction of Master Rosarian. Every local rose club has the opportunity to select and recognize a member or team for outstanding service by awarding the Bronze Medal. During the past ten months, Bronze Medals were presented to Sam Sandusky, Anita and Bill Solarz, Warren Knopp, Elinor Powell, Dave and Susie Ackers, Cal Schroeck, Catherine Vickers, Joseph Toth, Robert “Bud” Frick, Helen Beddoes, Tim Hartranft, Pat Martinec and Mark Miller. Thank you for your service and leadership. District Officers At the Lancaster Convention and district meeting, Tom Herr became the Buckeye District President and Charles Searson was voted into the office of Second Vice President. My three year term as District Director will end at the 2009 National Convention in Palm Springs, California. Nominating acceptances for the next director are available from your local club president and the voting will occur next year. The confirmed qualified candidates are Richard Anthony who sold his business and works as a C. P. A. in the Cleveland area and Dr. Elton Smith, horticulturalist, who retired from The Ohio State University Cooperative Extension Service and owns a nursery in Delaware, Ohio. Both men are avid rose growers and exhibitors. A new Region Four Director will begin the three year term in office following the retirement of George Hartley at the Palm Springs Convention. The candidates are Dr. Kent Campbell, who currently holds the office of Director of the Tenarky District and Dr. Jim Hering, President Emeritus of The American Rose Society. District Finances Many local clubs have received money from the District Treasury for educational purposes. The arrangement workshops, Consulting Rosarian schools and other events have been worthwhile projects. All of the money appropriated for this purpose has been used. At the Spring meeting the 2 members will determine if the district has sufficient funds available to renew and fund this project. At the business meeting in Lancaster the members voted to share the cost of travel for the District Director by providing up to $1,000 for each of the possible three stated ARS board meetings. This will pay part of the Director's expense and open the avenue for more people to seek the office. The District Endowment money is invested in three mutual funds. There has been some decrease in the value as the investment market changes. However, in the long run the investments are solid and secure. FUTURE EVENTS Mark your calendar for the Spring Meeting on Saturday April 4, 2009 at the Berwick Party Center in Columbus, Ohio. The ARS Vice President candidates Bob Martin and Jolene Adams will each present a program and then tell us why they seek office. Funds from the District Treasury will continue to share in the cost of the meeting. It is anticipated the registration will remain at $25.00 and that includes an excellent hot lunch. Anita Solarz is managing the miniature and miniflora rose sale that includes an extensive list of varieties of Nor'East and Whit Wells roses. OUR GOAL IS TO LEARN, SHARE AND HAVE FUN. Let me know if we need a third speaker and the topic you would like to hear. I will need this information soon as the good speakers are booked early. The 2008 Fall Buckeye District Convention and Rose Show was a great success thanks to General Chairman Steve Campbell, members of the host Lancaster Rose Club and others from our district, the Gulf District, the Deep South District, the Tenarky District, the Indiana-Illinois District and the Great Lakes District who made substantial contributions of time and effort. Our guest speaker, Eddie Edwards, was informative, stimulating and entertaining, and the 2008 Buckeye District Outstanding Judge Award was presented to Dr. Jim Englert at the awards banquet. Congratulations Jim! Dolores Weber has requested a change in her judging status from Accredited to Emeritus, and this is reflected in the Judges' Roster which accompanies the Bulletin. Dolores has served the Buckeye District faithfully and unselfishly for many years, and the District is indebted to her. Thank you Dolores! Consulting Rosarian Corner I would like to welcome our newest Consulting Rosarian Lisa Crego (Weber). I also wanted to remind all Consulting Rosarians that they need to file the CR report form by January 15th. Fill out the form and send it to me. We are planning a Consulting Rosarian School in Cincinnati on Saturday March 21, 2009 and the contact person is Susan Dolph or me to get the forms needed to be a new CR. To audit the class please either contact Susan or Tom Wood and we will put you on to audit the class.
