1955: A race is born
Summer frocks and shirtsleeves
were the order of the day as thousands
of spectators crowded the
vantage points around the course
to witness what was described as
an ambitious three-race programme
for a first ever meeting!
Manxman Derek Ennett took
the honours of winning the first
ever race, the 350cc over 12 laps
of the 4.25-mile course, after a
race long tussle with Manchester’s
Dave Chadwick. Despite grabbing a
20-yard lead from the starting grid,
Manxman Ennett was continually
challenged by Chadwick throughout
the 12-lap race and only just
managed to pip Chadwick by four
lengths at the flag.
