Feather cloak 51 in. long mostly red with yellow crescents. This<br />

is displa3'ed on a figure supposed to represent an Hawaiian but<br />

this is not a success. Feather cape 16 in. long in middle, 9 in. at<br />

the front edge; red ground with 3'ellow border, triangles, and cres-<br />

cents*. Cape 14 in. long, yellow ground and red semicrescents<br />

and triangles. Helmet with traces <strong>of</strong> feathers. Helmet with<br />

yellow crest and traces <strong>of</strong> red and- black feathers. Helmet red<br />

with black stripe at the base <strong>of</strong> crest, which is capped with yel-<br />

low; two stripes on left side. Helmet without feathers but with<br />

a crest <strong>of</strong> five pedunculated disks. Kukailimoku with reddish<br />

human hair. 2 Hula drums <strong>of</strong> gourd. Drum <strong>of</strong> coconut wood;<br />

another with head and more elaborate carving. Ukcke, a poor<br />

specimen. 3 Bambu time-beaters ( Ohc hula puili) . Gourd<br />

hokiokio; another <strong>of</strong> coconut. 4 Rattles <strong>of</strong> gourd with feathers;<br />

one without. 2 Nose flutes. Coconut drum. 3 Stone cups.<br />

t The late king Kalakaua considered this figure a representation <strong>of</strong> Papa the first woman<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hawaiian mythology, but was at a loss to explain the posture; it must be remembered<br />

that, like Eve, Papa did not behave with perfedt propriety and this may record her repentance,<br />

although we are not assured that Adam's disobedient wife ever repented.<br />
