(“AFS International”) is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under the laws of New York State, USA, and is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) of the United States of America. AFS Partner organizations (“Partners”) are incorporated under the laws of the country in which they are located and likewise prepare financial statements and tax reports as required by the jurisdictions in their respective countries. Each Partner undergoes an annual fiscal audit and presents to AFS International a copy of the independent auditor’s opinion along with its financial statements. While rules and regulations vary among Partner nations, audits generally follow standards consistent with U.S.–based GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). The tables presented are not the result of an audit performed by one firm, but represent combined information from audits performed by a number of independent auditors around the world. The summary format of the tables reflects the combined financial activities in the AFS worldwide Network of Partners. The information for 2007 has been gathered from the 2007 audited financial statements of 50 Partners and includes AFS International. The 2008 figures presented on the opposite page are based on preliminary estimates, pending completion of annual audits around the world. The 2008 figures presented in these tables are preliminary estimates provided by AFS Partners. AFFILIATIONS AFS has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations and works with the Department of Public Information of the United Nations. AFS is a participating member of the following international organizations: The Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research (SIETAR) and the Institute of International Education (IIE). The European Federation for Intercultural Learning (EFIL) is the umbrella organization for AFS Partners in Europe. EFIL has consultative status with the Council of Europe and with UNESCO and is a member of the European Youth Forum. EFIL cooperates with and is a member of many European education and youth organizations. AFS-USA is a founding member of the Alliance for International Education and Cultural Exchange, and serves on the board of directors of the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET). Other AFS Partner organizations in many countries maintain affiliations with their respective national youth councils, international education associations and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
