Chapter 1 Outlander: The Origins â€œWill we ever get to see Outlander adapted for thescreen?â€• Since the novel first came out in 1991, author Diana Gabaldon has fielded that questionfrom enthusiastic readers almost daily. The story of Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraserseemed an obvious choice for a cinematic retelling, but the project was not without its logisticalchallenges. With the novel weighing in at more than 600 pages, the core dilemma always centeredon how much of the action-Âpacked adventure would have to be cut just to fit the traditionalcinematic window of two hours. With too much to lose to the proverbial cutting room floor, theworld of Outlander remained strictly in the realm of print. It wasnâ€t until around 2010 that apossible solution started to present itself: a television series. Maril Davis, a developmentexecutive/coâ€“Âexecutive producer for Ronald D. Mooreâ€s Tall Ship Productions, waslooking for potential properties to produce and had the books recommended to her by friend andsoftball teammate Matthew B. Roberts. â€œ[Roberts] had read the books as a reader during oneof his first jobs,â€• Davis explains. â€œHe passed on the books because they wanted to do moviesbut told me they would be great for TV. I took him up on that and read them all the way through.â€œI loved them,â€• Davis says with unabashed adoration. â€œThis to me was my passionproject.â€• But the television landscape at the time wasnâ€t yet the haven for high-Âconcept sci-Âfi series it seems to be today. â€œGame of Thrones was not on at that point. Ron had tried todo Dragonriders of Pern. It just didnâ€t feel like the timing was right.â€• Cut to a personal dinnerDavis was having with Moore and his wife, Terry Dresbach, where the three started talking aboutthe projects they had always longed to do. â€œI said, â€˜My passion project is this book seriescalled Outlander, and I would love to do them,â€â€‰â€• Davis recalls. â€œI didnâ€t realizeTerry was also a fan.
