Boththe valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went toStanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer andjournalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel,Â Cup of GoldÂ (1929). Aftermarriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books,Â The Pastures ofHeavenÂ (1932) andÂ To a God UnknownÂ (1933), and worked on short stories later collected inÂThe Long ValleyÂ (1938). Popular success and financial security came only withÂ Tortilla FlatÂ(1935), stories about Montereyâ€s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career,Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on theCalifornia laboring class:Â In Dubious BattleÂ (1936),Â Of Mice and MenÂ (1937), and the bookconsidered by many his finest,Â The Grapes of WrathÂ (1939).Â The Grapes of WrathÂ won boththe National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939. Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became afilmmaker withÂ The Forgotten VillageÂ (1941) and a serious student of marine biology withÂ Seaof CortezÂ (1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and thecontroversial play-noveletteÂ The Moon is DownÂ (1942).Cannery RowÂ (1945),Â The WaywardBusÂ (1948), another experimental drama,Â Burning Bright(1950), andÂ The Log from the Sea ofCortezÂ (1951) preceded publication of the monumentalÂ East of EdenÂ (1952), an ambitioussaga of the Salinas Valley and his own familyâ€s history. The last decades of his life were spentin New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later booksincludeÂ Sweet ThursdayÂ (1954),Â The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A FabricationÂ (1957),Â OnceThere Was a WarÂ (1958),Â The Winter of Our DiscontentÂ (1961),Travels with Charley in Searchof AmericaÂ (1962),Â America and AmericansÂ (1966), and the posthumously publishedÂ Journalof a Novel: The East of Eden LettersÂ (1969),Â Viva Zapata!(1975),Â The Acts of King Arthur andHis Noble KnightsÂ (1976), andÂ Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of WrathÂ (1989).Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with theUnited States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writersand cultural figures.Â
