1.1: History of EyeglassesEyeglasses HistoryThe first vision aid, called a reading stone, was invented around 1000 AD. The reading stone wasa glass sphere that was laid on top of the reading material to magnify the letters. The firstwearable eyeglasses were invented around 1284 in Italy. It is thought that Salvino D'Armate wastheir inventor.Inventor of GlassesSalvino D'Armate is most often credited with the invention of the first wearable eyeglassesaround 1284. The earliest glasses were prescribed for hyperopia and perched on the bridge of thenose. Sunglasses as we know them today were invented in 1929 by Sam Foster. He made itutilizing the polarizing filter and sold it to the public in an Atlantic City Woolworths.Later Developments of GlassesIn the 17th century people knew the principle of the concave and convex lenses. Eyeglasses canbe produced with single lenses that correct for distance vision or up close, or they can bemanufactured with multifocal lenses, which correct both distance and reading. Concave glass isused to correct nearsightedness, so that the rays of light are diverged. Convex lenses are used toaid the correction of farsightedness, so that the light rays are converged. Cylindrical lenses usedto correct astigmatism were invented by Sir George Airy in 1825. Bifocal lenses can be used totreat with nearsightedness and presbyopia (with a lower part for viewing objects near at hand (asin reading)). They were the first devised by Benjamin Franklin in 1784.Figure : Graphical figure of GlassesThe first eyeglass frame temples were made by Spanish craftsmen in the 1600's. They affixribbons of silk or strings to the frame and loop them over the user's ears. The new types ofeyeglasses carried out to China by Spanish and Italian missionaries. Instead of making loops, theChinese attached small metal weights to the strings. In 1730 Optician Edward Scarlett designedrigid temples that rest atop the wearer's ears.
Glass, plastic or polycarbonate are lens materials for glasses. Glass was the original material forspectacles because it has great optical clarity, but the glass lenses can be very heavy in strongerprescriptions. Plastic lenses are much lighter than glass but they are prone to easily beingscratched.
