THREE SKOKIE CADDIES EARN EVANS SCHOLARSHIPS The Evans Scholarships were initiated by Chick Evans in 1930 when with the assistance of the Western Golf Association two caddies were awarded scholarships to Chick's alma mater Northwestern University. The Program, now in its 82nd year, has 825 caddies currently attending 15 universities with the Evans Scholarship providing free tuition and housing. The majority of the funding comes from the Par Club program which was supported by 238 Skokie members in calendar year 2011. This is a tribute to our membership at all levels especially in today's economy and with other assessments. To date the Evans Scholars Alumni are 9400 strong and they make annual contributions to the Evans Scholars Fund, the largest privately funded college scholarship program in the United States, of over $4,000,000. Since the inception of the Program, Evans alumni from Skokie number 20 with three caddies currently in college. Those are Arturo Vergara (Rufo's son) who will graduate from the University of Illinois on Mother's Day, and Armando Barron and Edgar Herrara, both attending Marquette University. For the first time in the eight decades of the Evans Scholarship Program, Skokie Country Club had three caddies selected for the Scholarships for the academic year 2012-2013. Jaime Arancha Rochel and Miguel Aviles were awarded Evans Scholarships to attend Northwestern University but declined the awards to attend the University of Chicago and Bowdoin College respectively, as they received full financial assistance to both institutions. Please remember that the candidates who receive the Evans must attend one of the 15 universities who support and participate in the Program. The wonderful news I now wish to share with you is that our tremendous and loyal men's locker room manager, Manny Ibarra, has been wearing a bigger than usual smile on his face after his son, Manny, a senior at Warren Township High School, learned in late March that he has been named an Evans Scholar and will matriculate at Northern Illinois University in the Fall. Manuel Since all three recipients will still be Frausto-Sandoval caddying this Summer, please seek them out and congratulate them for their accomplishments. For those who did not include the Evans Scholarship Fund in their charitable giving, please consider doing so this year as tuition and room and board continue to rise exponentially. We have another excellent staff this year that are ready for an active summer at the pool. So when you get a chance introduce yourself to some of our new guards. The swim team, Skokie Speed had a down year last summer but is gearing up for a successful season of swimming and diving this year. Skokie CC is the host of The Big and Little Four Championship Meets which are on July 9 th and 10 th so let’s make sure we are in town and ready to go for these two big meets. We are always looking for more swimmers and divers, no experience is needed and it is a lot of FUN so come out and join the team! If you are on a Swimming or Diving Club Team that you cannot make the Skokie practices we still want and need you for the Meets. So encourage all your friends to join us on the swimming and diving team for a great 2012 season. Swimming lessons are getting more popular every year and a lot of the good time slots fill up quickly. WE CAN WORK WITH ADULTS OR OLDER SWIM TEAM MEMBERS TO SHARPEN THEIR STROKES FOR COMPETITION OR FITNESS. Rebecca Nash is our Diving Coach this season and will be available to teach lessons to get those dives perfect you can contact Rebecca at the pool when we open. This summer, veteran guards Kelly Murphy, Alex Tatham, Jessica Murphy, Jen Burke, Andrew Maksimovic, Mary Claire Seeberg, Jeff Wolter, Laura Johnson, and Kaedi Young will head up our guards at Skokie. Our new guards this summer are Ryan Hianik, Sara Bilimoria, Adam Vevang, Rebecca Nash and Ethan Spalding. They are a great group of guards that can’t wait to start the season and carry on the Skokie tradition of excellence. The pool will officially open on Saturday May 26th at 10:00 AM. Who will be the first person to dive into the pool to open the summer season this year?
A RECORD FOR SKOKIE SCHOLARS 2011 proved to be a record setting year for the Skokie Country Club Educational Foundation. 330 members (a record) donated $85,535 (another record) which allowed us to offer scholarship awards to 38 Skokie Scholars (yet another record!). Scholarships were awarded this February in amounts ranging from $500 to $4,000 and were issued on a combination of merit and need. On behalf of Skokie’s employees, their families and the scholars the Directors of the Foundation would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to Skokie’s membership for your generous support of this program. Many of our scholarship recipients will be returning to work at Skokie this summer and they will be wearing Skokie Scholar name tags. Be sure to ask them how they put their scholarship to work. This year we may move our fund raising effort forward in the calendar in order to put us in position to issue awards during the fall semester. College expenses are high and they hit home before first semester even begins. These scholarships are meaningful and substantial and we feel that if we can issue them during the fall semester, it might just have greater impact.
