FUTA suspends final year
student for hacking Premium

AUTHORITIES of
the Federal University of
Technology, Akure, FUTA,
yesterday, suspended a
final year student of the
Department of Food
Science and Technology,
Afolabi Emmanuel, for
hacking the website of an
online news publication,
the Premium Times.
In a statement by the
institution’s Deputy
Director Corporate
Communication,
Adegbenro Adebanjo in
Akure described the
student’s action “as an act
that constitutes misconduct
and misuse of University IT
infrastructure.”
The letter of suspension
was dated August 5, 2020.
Adebanjo said: “The
University received a
complaint from Premium
Times about a Denial of
Service, DOS, attack on its
website between 28th and
29th February 2020,
through a concerted
vulnerability scanning by a
person using IT
infrastructure of the
University.
“Following the complaint,
the University
management initiated an
investigation and it was
discovered that Emmanuel
carried out the alleged act
of misconduct using the
login credentials of two
members of staff, without
authorization, to perpetrate
the act.
“The Notification of Indefinite
Suspension letter addressed to
Emmanuel and his sponsors
reads in part, ‘In the extant
Student’s Handbook of
Information, your action is
misconduct to abuse the use of
University IT Infrastructure.
“While still putting in place an
arrangement to give you an
opportunity to explain yourself,
you are, hereby, placed on an
indefinite suspension
retroactively from 18th March
2020.
Fayemi to striking doctors: Return to

L AGOS—PRESIDENT-
ELECT of the Nigeria Bar
Association, NBA, Mr.
Olumide Akpata, yesterday,
called on his supporters to
forthwith stop the social media
attack on other lawyers, who
may not have supported his
candidacy in the elections.
Akpata, in a statement, said:
“In the last few days, I have
observed with concern the
rising tide of social media
vitriol by a few lawyers
believed to be my supporters
who have unnecessarily
targeted and excoriated our
colleagues for no just cause.
Whilst I deeply appreciate
everyone who contributed to
my emergence as Presidentelect
of the NBA, I do not
subscribe to showing
disrespect to other people
because they did not support
my candidacy.
“Ours is a noble profession
that prides itself on the high
sense of discipline, learning,
respect for seniority and
character for which its
members are reputed.
“The mandate that I have
from Nigerian lawyers is to
work for all members of the
Bar irrespective of who they
voted for in the just-concluded
elections. In my acceptance
speech, I made the obvious
point that there is so much
work to be done to revitalise
our Bar and make it work for
everyone without
discrimination. This enormous
task cannot be achieved if we
continue to fan the embers of
division at a time when we
desperately need to unite and
speak with one firm voice.
“I, therefore, use this
medium to appeal to our
colleagues (both junior and
senior) who supported me to
show respect to seniors and
peers whilst celebrating last week’s
electoral victory. We must be kind,
magnanimous, respectful and
sensitive by our words and actions."
‘Oyetola committed to good govt/citizens
relations’

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye,
yesterday, restated the
commitment of Governor
Adegboyega Oyetola to
deepening the bond
between the government
and residents of the state.
Oyintiloye said this
during an interaction with
the forum of Community
Relation Officers, CROs, in
the state, held at the Centre
for Civic Engagement in
Osogbo.
He said: “Governor Oyetola is
committed to the democratic
structures that will ensure that
yearnings and aspirations of the
people are attended to with the
available resources.
“The governor is leaving no
stone unturned in running
inclusive and people-centered
governance. He wants the
citizenry to be better informed
and engaged about the general
issues of governance, through
the institution of Civic
Engagements in the state."

....Laments spike in COVID-19 cases

Fayemi also lamented the
increasing number of
COVID-19 cases recorded
between July and August
in Ekiti, which now stands
at 152.
The governor said this in
a statewide broadcast in
Ekiti.
He called on the striking
doctors, under the auspices
of the National Association
of Government General
Medical and Dental
Practitioners, NAGGMDP,
to end the strike in the
interest of the citizens.
His words: “We can
always collect arrears of
unpaid allowances, but a
life lost cannot be reversed.
That is why I should like to
call on the doctors to take
the patriotic route like other
health workers and the
organised labour for an
immediate end to the
needless strike.
“I do not want to be put
in a situation where I have
to invoke the no work, no
pay in Ekiti.”
Expressing regret over
the inability of his
government to pay the
financial benefits of workers
who got promoted five
years ago, Fayemi said: “It
wasn’t my style and
intention to deprive people
of their legitimate
entitlements”.
Commending the labour
leader for being patriotic,
Fayemi said: “Two days
ago, the leadership of the
organised labour
comprising Nigeria Labour
Congress, Trade Union
Congress and Joint
Negotiation Council also
embarked on a warning
strike which they
immediately called off after
engaging with the
Government.
“For instance, I am
pained in my heart that
people who got promoted
for about five years ago
have not enjoyed the
corresponding financial
benefits.
These are things which
give me great pain and
which I am absolutely
committed to assuaging
their feelings.”
Explaining the inability of
his government to meet its
financial obligation to
workers, Fayemi said:
“Apart from the fact that our
monthly federally received
allocation has plummeted
considerably because of low
crude prices and off-take,
our internally generated
revenue has gone worse as
many businesses that should
pay taxes are themselves under
different government supports to
stay afloat.”
Oyo approves N59.7m for Amotekun
take-off

IBADAN—THE Oyo
State Government,
yesterday, approved the
sum of N59.7 million as
grants for the take-off of the
State Security Network
Agency, codenamed
‘Operation Amotekun’.
This was disclosed after
the state’s 19th virtual
executive meeting, where
the executive council
approved the fund for the
procurement of 3000 units
of uniforms, combat boots,
lanyard, baseball hats,
security belts and worsted
socks.
It will also cover the
production of logos for the
personnel to serve as
identity and distinguish
them from other security
agencies in the State.
The Commissioner for
Information, Culture and
Tourism, Dr. Wasiu
Olatunbosun, while
disclosing the outcome of
the meeting, said: “Further
on the establishment of the
State Security Network,
codenamed Operation
Amotekun and for the
effective take-off of the
agency, the State Executive
Council has approved the
procurement of 3000 units
of uniforms and
accoutrements such as
combat boots, lanyard,
baseball hats, security belts,
worsted socks, production
of Amotekun and Oyo
State logo for 3000
Amotekun corps to be
recruited into the agency at
a total sum of N59.7m.
“The uniforms and
accoutrements which will
be given to each recruited
Amotekun Corp will serve
as a form of identity for the
corps and will distinguish
them from other security
agencies in the state.”
Olatubosun further stated
that the council also
approved funds for reaccreditation
of Adeoyo
Maternity at Yemetu in
Ibadan as a fully-fledged
teaching hospital, as the
accreditation initially got
was withdrawn for failure
to have necessary
equipment in place, saying
it was in conformity with the
present administration’s
passion to revitalise the
health sector in the State.
