Peopletend to eat most of their proteinat one meal, researchersfound, but it’s more beneficialfor muscle mass if protein isspread out throughout theday.Researchers in the Schoolof Sport, Exercise andRehabilitation Sciences studiedthe dietary intake of peopleof various ages, focusingon the amounts, pattern andsource of protein they consumed.They found thatseniors were more likely toeat lower-quality proteins,such as bread, at lunchtime.The results of the researchsuggest that dietary guidelinesmight need to be adjustedfor seniors, to encouragequality protein intakethroughout the day.“Older individuals need toeat more protein to get thesame muscle buildingresponse as younger and middle-agedpeople,” said leadresearcher Dr. BenoitSmeuninx. “Most people arereaching the RecommendedDaily Allowance of protein,but our results show that aone-size-fits-all guideline forprotein intake isn’t appropriateacross all age groups.Simply saying older peopleshould eat more protein isn’treally enough either.
