2 Advertising & Newsdesk: (046) 624-4356 Find us on Facebook 27 August 2020 TALK OF THE TOW NWoman questions mom’s deathCovid-19 patient file error at PA Hospital deniedTK MTIKIThe daughter of a womanwho died in Port AlfredHospital last month, saysshe has been left with manyquestions over the “my s t e r i o u s ”circumstances surrounding hermother’s death.Nontsikelelo Sikiti, fromMfolozi, Kenton-on-Sea, saidher mother, Kliniwe Dama, haddied on July 29.Sikiti, who has her father’ssurname because her parentswere married traditionally,claims the hospital accidentallytreated her mother usinganother patient’s file.Sikiti said someone from thehospital had phoned her andapologised for the error.She said her mother wa shospitalised on July 11, and wasplaced in a Covid-19 patients’ward with the assumption thatshe had the virus. “They also puther on a drip,” Sikiti said.While Sikiti had thought hermother was Covid-19 positive,she said the hospital hadphoned her on July 20, and hadapologised, saying her mother’sresults were negative but thatshe was accidentally treatedbased on someone else’s file.She said after the hospitalhad admitted to the error, hermother was moved to a medicalward, where she died nine daysl a t e r.A grieving Sikiti said hermother was buried on August 8.Sikiti said she had alsotravelled back and forth to thehospital trying to get her latemother’s clothes, which hadgone missing there.“I went to the medical wardtwice where she was admitted,looking for her clothes, but theycannot be found,” she said.However, provincial healthdepartment spokespersonSiyanda Manana disputed theclaim that Dama was placed ina Covid-19 ward. In response toTo T ’s questions, Manana said:“The patient was admitted onJuly 11 2020 in a criticalcondition and also as a personunder investigation [PUI].”He said: “Results for Covidreceived on July 20. Patientdemised 18 days after Coviddiagnosis. She had comorbidities.“According to records shewas tested on admission, andwhile awaiting for results ,she[was] treated as person underinvestigation because all signswere there,” he said.In response to the swappedfiles claim, Manana said: “Th e r ewas none of that.”He added: “She was isolatedin a ward and was never put in award with positive patientsbecause she was a suspect thenawaiting results.“Once you are confirmedpositive, you get put in amedical ward. So thenext day, because I like to poke the bear,I cut my neighbour’s verge for him. Nocomplaint at all.”Colin Parsons added a positive voiceabout local police.“We live in Bathurst [and] at everyroadblock that we went through theSAPS were friendly, well-mannered andmost of all, smiling,” he said.Joanne Brown attested to the manykudos for the Port Alfred SAPS.“Have only found the police in thistown pleasant and helpful,” she said.Vanessa Nailbar agreed that Po r tAlfred had decent police officers.In support of Nailbar’s view, E l v i e raKesia Valentine said: “Stem 180%”.Though highlighting she knewsomeone who was given a hard time bythe police, but only in questioning him,Caryn Bruyns also said she did notexperience or observe any policebrutality in Port Alfred.“He wasn’t manhandled or anythingthough, just questioned.
