Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), formed in December 2000, provides a focus
for research and educational activities with the broad realm of bioengineering and biotechnology.
It is the department , s goal to spearhead research endeavors by the faculty and introduce graduate
and undergraduate students to the exciting frontiers of biomedical engineering.
Faculty Highlights
All core and adjunct BME faculty are deeply involved in research, technology development, and
undergraduate and graduate education programs. New faculty joining over the past year include Ki
Chon (biosignal processing and bioinstrumentation), Molly Frame (bionanotechnology), Glenn
Gaudette (cardiovascular bioengineering), Richard Clark (tissue engineering) and Yingtian Pan
(biosensors and bio-optical imaging). Dr. Shmuel Einav, a distinguished professor of cardiovascular
bioengineering from Tel Aviv University is on sabbatical in our department as both a professor and
an associate Dean of CEAS.
BME faculty continues to receive awards and recognition that demonstrate the exceptional quality
and standard of their work:
w Dr. Clinton Rubin, Professor and Chair of the department, was awarded the prestigious
Elizabeth Winston Lanier Kappa Delta Award by the American Academy of Orthopedic
Surgeons (AAOS), one of the highest honors given by the national organization.
w Dr. Stefan Judex, Assistant Professor, was awarded a three year, $760,000 grant by NASA for
his work in identifying the genetic basis that predispose individuals to excessive bone or muscle
loss during long term space flight. Dr. Judex also received the Promising Young Scientist
award by the International Society of Biomechanics.
w Dr. Danny Bluestein, Associate Professor, was awarded the prestigious Established Investigator
Award (EIA) by the American Heart Association.
w Dr. Glenn Gaudette, Assistant Professor, received one of New York , s ten James D.Watson
Investigator awards that honors outstanding scientists who show potential for leadership and
discovery in the field of biotechnology.
w Dr.Yi-Xian Qin, Assistant Professor, was honored by SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King for his
outstanding research contribution through his invention "Scanning Confocal Acoustic
Diagnostic for Bone Quality (SCAD)."
Degree Programs
The University was approved to award the MS/PhD degree in June 1998, and is SUNY , s first Ph.D.
program in Biomedical Engineering. The department also received a three-year, $160,000 award in
2001 from The Whitaker Foundation to develop internship programs within the biomedical engineering
industry. A portion of this award was used to establish an undergraduate curriculum
appropriate for use as a core sequence in an undergraduate major. The first class of students
enrolled in Fall 2002, again representing a SUNY first in this discipline.
The Future
The 21st century is destined to be remembered as the age of biomedical engineering. As the
Department of Biomedical Engineering evolves, its goal is to expand into a University leadership
position, raising both faculty and student interest and involvement in this promising new discipline.
