ThE IMPOrTANCE OF SUPPOrTING YOUr ChIlD deBBIe phelpS SpeakS froM her oWn experIenCe You need to be there for your child. Physically. At whatever expense it might be. I think it’s very important to be in the stands. And I say that because I made a really big mistake. The year that Hillary graduated from college, Whitney was in college. I decided to go to Hillary’s last collegiate meet; which The most important thing about competition nutrition is to find and USE what works best for YOU. Having said that, here are some useful tips... 1. Stay hydrated. This should be in-practice throughout your training, so it should pose no real problem. 3L of fluid per day for 170 lb. athlete – adjust volume up or down by bodyweight. 2. Eat carbs to fuel activity. Avoid fats and overly processed sugar (sugar-cereal, pastries, etc) until after your competition on a given day. Eat high carb, moderate protein foods or drinks pre- and in-competition. 3. Eat a moderate to high calorie breakfast (or dinner the night before if early a.m. comp). DO THIS! It is the energy that FUELS your performance. 4. Stick to foods and drinks that you are somewhat familiar with. The day of your most important competition is not the 9 to me sounded like the right thing to do, instead of going to see Whitney swim because I thought Whitney had a couple more years to swim at the college she was attending. I thought that was a sound decision on my part. But that was Whitney’s last meet. I never saw her swim collegiately. I feel that was a big mistake on my part. You don’t know what longevity is going to be. You know, people may say, “Well I’ll look for Michael in ’08, or for him in 2012.” But tomorrow, something may happen. So I feel it’s very important, if you support your child, to be wherever they’re going to be. Whether it means taking a loan out, or putting it on your charge card, I just think it’s very important. So someone said, “Then you’re living for the moment.” Well… yeah. I guess you are. Because, Olympics only come around every four years. And we have International meets in between. But I’ll tell you, when Michael and the girls were age group swimmers, I was always a chaperone for the club, and just being a mom to all the kids I could possibly be moms to because that was very, very important.
