WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE
Imagine you are
the parents of
Brad and Darryn
Binder watching the Chech
MotoGP alone in your house
in Krugersdorp. Normally
you are at trackside with the
boys but with the Corona
pandemic halting movement
around the world, flights
out of here are impossible
to get. It was hard enough
getting Brad (International
World Champion) back after
lockdown in any case.
So the two of you alone in
front of the telly, he’s qualified
in a fantastic position in
7th but then the race starts
and he starts moving up and
up and up till he eventually
passes 2nd placed star man
and championship leader
Quartararo, then closes
the gap to Morbidelli and
all of a sudden, your son
is leading the Moto GP and
pulling away in front of the
best of the best in the world.
Can you imagine being the
Binder parents, what an absolutely
beautiful moment.
Well turn to page 58 and
and read about my interview
with them directly after his
win. Also you can go to our
website and hear the whole
interview on our pod cast, it
gives some good insights to
the family. I’m honoured to
say I have known them their
whole motorcycling racing
life. Bliksem, those BOYS
are fast!
This issue is a MotoGP
issue, from Mat Oxley on
the Spanner Man, to Simon
Patterson on Brad to the
“Porra” Oiviera with also his
maiden win also on a KTM.
This Austrian Company is
going places!
We at least do some other
things as well, we do SA’s
launch of the Tiger 900 and
BMW’s XR 900 and Roadster.
We put The latest Fireblade
on Noddy’s dyno and it
makes the most HP of any
standard 1000cc Superbike
ever! Peter McBride from
Hi-Side Saloon gives us his
take on the Corona Riders of
which we can all relate to.
So in a nutshell, we loving
being back in print, please
support us by either subscribing
or buying us at the
shops, that’s how we get to
live this life of motorcycling.
If you think my editors note
PETRONAS REPLICA
YAMAHA YZF-R1
Race replicas are nothing new in the
motorcycle industry. Take your street
model, slap some paint and sponsor
graphics on it, and call it good. Easy
peasy. The folks at Yamaha Motor Europe
didn’t get that memo, however.
Teaming up with the YART GTYR
Pro Shop, these stalwarts of the tuning
fork brand have created a unique
YZF-R1 that pays homage to another
of their sister outfits, the Petronas-backed
Sepang Racing Team.
At first glance, it is easy to miss
the fact that you are not looking at
the MotoGP-bred Yamaha YZR-M1,
as YME and YART have created a new
front fairing for the R1, which incorporates
a large winglet design.
On top of that is the traditional
turquoise and black livery from SRT
Yamaha, complete with the sponsor
graphics you would expect from a
replica machine.
Completing the package is a bevy
of GYTR parts from the Yamaha parts
bin, as well as some tasty high-spec
bits that you would normally see on a
race bike.
This includes Öhlins FGRT front
forks, an Öhlins TTX rear shock, and
a Öhlins steering damper, as well
as Brembo GP4-RX calipers, mated
to a 19mm Brembo RCS Corsacorta
master cylinder and Brembo 320mm
T-Drive discs.
You will find forged aluminum
Marchesini wheels in the package as
well (shod with Michelin race slicks,
obviously), along with a bevy of tita-

9
nium bolts, carbon fiber bodywork
pieces, and a GYTR ECU.
All-in-all, it is a pretty spicy track
build for a Yamaha YZF-R1 in its
own right, with YME and YART then
going the extra distance to make it
something unique for the 46 potential
buyers (helping to commemorate
46 years of Petronas in motorcycle
racing).
“We are delighted to be introducing
this exclusive PETRONAS Yamaha
SRT MotoGP replica, which includes
a variety of upgrades to bring near
MotoGP performance to our customers,”
said Mandy Kainz, owner of
YART GYTR Yamaha Pro Shop.
“It’s a timely launch, as it coincides
with the 20th anniversary of
the foundation of the Yamaha Austria
Racing Team and the opening of
our new GYTR Pro Shop. Everyone
at PETRONAS Yamaha SRT, YART
and all of our partners have done a
fantastic job putting this project together
and I’d like to thank everyone
involved in producing what is, without
question, a magnificent bike.”
Along with the replica YZF-R1
itself, each customer will receive
an exclusive package comprising a
KYT Helmet, a Petronas Yamaha SRT
polo shirt, and the future opportunity
for a VIP guest pass for the MotoGP
round of their choice. Pricing is set at
around R927,000.

MARC MARQUEZ:
WE FOLLOWED
DOCTORS’
ADVICE, TIME TO
FOCUS ON 100%
Marc Marquez explains why he will likely sit
out the remainder of the 2020 MotoGP season
as he continues his recovery from injury
Marc Marquez has given
more details into his decision
to focus on returning
to full fitness after Honda
confirmed he is set to miss the next
two to three months recovering from
his injury.
The Spaniard has been out of
action since the second round of
the 2020 MotoGP World Championship
season when he attempted to
compete just days after undergoing
surgery on the arm he fractured
during the closing stages of the Jerez
opener a week earlier.
However, when it was discovered
the titanium plate that had
been inserted into his arm had been
damaged, a second operation was
POL TARRÉS
- THE SEEKER
MOVIE
After the success of the Dominicana
video last winter, The Who crew are more
than excited to present The Seeker, a new
short movie about motorcycles, dreamy
locations and impossible tricks by the giant
Pol Tarrés.
The Seeker in another short film directed
by the Echevarria Brothers (THE WHO)
and presented by Kriega, the very best
possible luggage options for motorcyclists
( www.kreiga.com) and RDX, motorcycle
goggles designed in Australia. The Seeker
is the fourth episode of the Beyond the
Wheels motorcycle series and supported
by many other brands that believe in the
project since the very beginning.
Watch the full video by scanning the QR
code - you will not be dissapointed!
necessary to fix the issue. As a result,
Marquez was forced to sit out the
most recent triple-header, even if
there was hope he’d be back in action
at Misano next month prior to the
most recent announcement.
Speaking in an interview with
Spanish broadcaster DAZN, Marquez
says he followed the advice available
to him when he returned to action
so soon after surgery, but the latest
complication ultimately sets him
back to the extent he will cede his
World Championship title.
“It’s hard to watch MotoGP from
the sofa and I would like to be there,
but in the career of athletes we take
a lot of risk and it’s normal,” he said.
“It is my eighth season in MotoGP,
taking risks to achieve goals and
unfortunately this strange season
has been difficult for me because of
the injury.
“The first time I am following what
the doctors said to me and gave me
the confidence to ride the bike, do
some gym because the plate was
strong enough, so I did what they
recommended.
“Now I will do the same, I will
follow their recommendation and
they say it is much better to stay
calm, pass this month, fix well. It is
the right arm and I struggled in the
winter with the shoulder, so now it is
time to put everything in the correct
way and come back 100%.”

MOTUL EMPOWERS WOMEN ON TWO WHEELS – AN ICONIC
EXPERIENCE FOR #ICONICWOMEN
On Saturday 22 August, Motul
South Africa demonstrated
its commitment to the ideals
of Women’s Month and the
#IconicWomen campaign. In partnership
with Honda South Africa, the
Motul team hosted a LEARN TO RIDE
A MOTORCYCLE day at ADA Training
and Outdoor Centre.
This event was a natural follow-on
to the nomination of Motul’s own
Mercia Jansen as part of the #IconicWomen
campaign developed and
managed by Shelby South Africa and
Road to Race.
“As part of this campaign, we
have each created an opportunity
for women to participate in something
that we’re passionate about.
My love of riding is something that
I have always wanted to share with
other women – hence the LEARN TO
RIDE A MOTORCYCLE day’” explained
Mercia Jansen, Motul Area Manager
for Southern and Eastern Africa. “I
have loved seeing all the videos and
photos from our day – the ladies’
beaming smiles made it clear how
much fun they were having, while
the pride and encouragement from
their partners and families made the
experience even more special,” she
added.
Adilia Joubert, one of the participants,
reported that she was excited
to have had the chance to learn to
ride machines that had previously
seemed too intimidating. “I was
inspired by Mercia revealing that
she had only started riding bikes
at 40. Since I have also recently hit
that milestone, and in the spirit of
life beginning at 40, I wanted to try
something new and more daring than
my other hobbies. My husband is a
keen motorcyclist, and this has been
something I’ve wanted to share with
him, but until now the fear factor was
just a little too much for me,” admitted
Adilia. “Now that I’ve had this
great experience, he can look forward
to some company on his weekend
rides,” she added.
Throughout the day, the ADA
Training and Outdoor Centre in
Hartbeespoort, North West Province,
echoed to whoops of joy as the lady
riders grew in confidence and began
to experience the feeling of freedom
that motorcyclists often refer to.
There was a real sense of camaraderie
between the women and their
partners, while the atmosphere at
the venue contributed to a successful
day for all the novice riders. A big
thank you to Honda SA for supplying
the bikes and allowing the attendees
– the riders and their partners - to
test out all the different models!
Legendary motorcyclist Brian
Capper was on hand to assist and
support the ladies during their
training, as were the professional
trainers supplied by ADA Training and
Outdoor Centre. The children who
had come along to watch their Moms
in action also got to enjoy the pedal
cars provided by Motul. The sight of
women riding bikes while husbands,
brothers and uncles pushed the kids
up and down the grass in the pedal
cars was exactly the kind of role-reversal
moment that the #IconicWomen
campaign aims to inspire.
The training session was followed
by lunch, with sparkling wine supplied
by the Boschendal Wine Estate.
“As a racing car driver, I was
delighted to have the chance to swap
my usual four wheels for just two,”
enthused Shelby SA/Road To Race’s
National Marketing Manager Paige
Lindenberg – the lady who first conceived
the idea of the #IconicWomen
campaign. “The professionalism
and patience of the trainers meant
that we all felt comfortable enough
to push ourselves a little more each
time we got onto the bikes,” added
Paige. She also urged women to
look out for forthcoming experiences
including a hot lap with Lindenberg in
her racing car.
Both Mercia and Paige reflected
on how successful the #IconicWomen
campaign has been in
building women’s confidence and
inspiring them to break down stereotypes
that may previously have discouraged
them from trying the kind
of new experiences that have traditionally
been seen as “male-dominated.”

TRIUMPH MOTORCYCLES
OPENS NEW DEALERSHIP
IN CAPE TOWN
THERE’S A
NEW HONDA
CBR600RR
13
Triumph South Africa
officially announces
the opening of Triumph
Cape Town on 1 August
2020. “The dealership
is situated in the Cape
Town city centre in the “premium
motorcycle” precinct and offers
the full range of Triumph products
and services, including motorcycle
sales, apparel and accessory
sales, parts sales and motorcycle
service,” said Bruce Allen, Triumph
South Africa CEO.
“While Triumph has always
offered aftersales support in Cape
Town, it is now time to ensure that
our motorcycle brand is represented
in the manner that we had
planned 2 years ago when Triumph
South Africa became the official
distributor of Triumph motorcycles.
We need to ensure that our dealerships
represent the Triumph brand
in a way that ensures a comprehensive
and premium customer
experience, which Triumph Cape
Town will now be able to deliver”
says Allen.
After a bit of teasing, the new Honda
CBR600RR is finally here, and with it
comes a few surprises.
Because of Honda’s teasers,
we already knew that this machine
would be an overhaul of the current
model, using the same chassis and
basic engine architecture as the
American-sold Honda CBR600RR.
Photos and video though confirmed
that the bike would get a
facelift, most notably with winglets
installed to the front fairing, and that
a robust electronics package would
be added to the mix, to help things
feel modern on this aging beast.
The biggest change is the power:
120hp (89 kW), which is a sizable
bump off the outgoing model’s peak
power figure, and puts the Honda
CBR600RR squarely in the range of
the class-leading Yamaha YZF-R6.
Honda makes this leap by increasing
the 599cc inline-four engine’s
redline, which is now 14,000 rpm.
Sadly it seems that this model
will not see our country as it is likely
to be a Japanese-only model. You’re
not allowed to purchase a 1,000cc
motorcycle for the road in Japan so it
makes sense.

HONDA MOTOR
SOUTHERN AFRICA
SUPPORTS RIDING
FOR A LIMB
Honda Motor Southern Africa is
proud to announce its support for
Riding for a Limb, the South African
non-profit organisation which raises
funds to provide prosthetic limbs to
amputees in need.
The organisation, founded by double-amputee
Gerda du Toit and Charl
Beukes in 2014, has provided 54
artificial limbs, costing more than R9
000 000, to 18 children and 8 bikers
during the past 6 years.
Riding for a Limb raises funds by
organising sponsored bike and car
drives, including Gerda’s own 4431
km bike ride on a Honda Integra in
2016, less than 2 years after losing
both of her legs due to diabetes.
“I went from a wheelchair to a
bike in 2 years, and it completely
changed my life,” says Gerda. “Riding
for a Limb is about more than just
giving amputees mobility – it transforms
lives, families and communities.
Giving amputees access to
prostheses allows them to dream as
big as they want to.”
A basic prosthesis can cost anything
from R80 000. An above-knee
amputation is a minimum of R120
000. This excludes re-fits, which cost
anything from R60 000.
“Most amputees do not have the
funds to get medical treatment such
as physio and attending rehabilitation
centres. Therefore, we go to
their homes and workplaces where
we assist with their rehabilitation
and teach them to walk again,” says
Gerda.
Because a child grows, they
continuously need new prostheses.
With an adult, the stump changes
and loses volume (becoming smaller).
Amputees therefore require new
prostheses as their bodies change. It
can take up to 5 years for the stump
to reach its final size. A prosthesis
that doesn’t fit properly can result in
wounds on the limb as well as other
– potentially very serious – complications,
it is therefore imperative that
the prostheses fit properly.
Riding for a Limb is committed to
ensuring that 100% of donated funds
are used for recipients.
Honda is providing Riding for a
Limb with a sponsored Jazz Sport.
“Even limited support can make a
substantial difference” says Dinesh
Govender, General Manager of
Corporate at Honda Motor Southern
Africa: “Honda believes in the power
of dreams. What that really means is
our power as human beings to make
a difference, and to make our dreams
and the dreams of others come true.
Imagine the transformative power of
giving people back their mobility. Every
contribution makes a permanent
difference in someone’s life.”

Analysis and data as Viñales
dodged disaster in Austria
17
Maverick Viñales was once again
fortunate to escape serious injury in
the Red Bull Ring in Austria after his
Yamaha bike’s brakes failed coming
into turn one of the BMW M Grand
Prix of Styria.
The Spanish rider narrowly avoided
disaster thanks to some quick
speed of thought, where he jumped
off his malfunctioning bike seconds
before it went crashing into the safety
fence and burst into flames.
Since the incident, Alpinestars
have broken down
the data of the incident which
thankfully saw the 25-yearold
come out unscathed.
Looking at the information,
we can see that Viñales
was travelling at 218 km/h
when he made the split
second decison to leap from
the bike, as the suits built-in
airbags deployed milliseconds
before initial impact to
protect the Catalan as he hit
the tarmac at well over 20g.
The Monster Energy rider
felt the maximum impact with
the ground just over a second
later, where he registered 23.45g
while sliding along the asphalt. This
was quickly followed by another
heavy impact at just over 20g, as he
continued to slide for another 4.8
seconds before slowing down into a
tumble for 1.9 seconds.
Thanks in large to the airbag
safety technology in the suit, Viñales
was able to immediately get back
to his feet but the same could not
be said for his factory Yamaha, as it
caught alight, causing the race to be
red flagged.
It was the second scary incident in
which the Catalan was involved in in
Austria, as seven days prior he was
lucky to avoid being hit by a flying
motorcycle in the Johann Zarco and
Franco Morbidelli crash.

WHEN YOU GIVE YOUR
CHILD A DIRT BIKE
Hi Clint,
I just want to share this with you, taken
off Facebook but it rang so true for me,
but I would not change a thing.
If you give your child a motocross
bike, they will want to ride. You’ll buy
them the best bike you can find, followed
by some kit, helmet and boots.
You look for local tracks to ride at
weekends, where you start to socialise
with the MX community…………And then
life as you
know it, will
end.
Before you
know it, they
want to RACE
so you find a
CLUB…..There
will be no more
lazy weekends
watching tv.
You will see
more sunrises
than you ever
thought possible.
Every spare
minute of your
time will be spent hauling campers,
caravans and bikes and enduring a crazy
addiction to practice for the race.
Your house may be a mess, and your
car will be dirty. All because you gave
your child a motocross bike. Your weekends
will be spent freezing or burning
to death on a fold-up chair. And their
weekends will be spent gaining confidence
and friends, learning new skills
and having fun and getting dirty!
You will be there the day he or she
makes there first hole shot , first podium,
first win. And they will make you SO
proud. Other parents will congratulate
you, but you feel weird saying thank you
because it’s not you on the track, it’s
your child. It’s everything that they did,
they achieved. And right before your
eyes, your little boy/girl will be transformed
from the baby who spun around
on their Pee-Wees into an expert.
When you give your child a motocross
bike , you give them more than
just something to ride. You give them
a sport, a talent, hope and dreams.
Friends, a new family, a place to learn
about life, room to grow as a person
where they can push their limits, and
bravery, and courage, and build memories.
They will have all of these things,
simply because you gave your child a
motocross bike.
Because you gave your child a
bike, you too will develop new/lifelong
friendships, developed solely from the
same passion for the sport. You will
have a motocross family because you
gave your child a motocross bike.
Then one day, many years from
today…they will be in their room and a
certain trophy will catch their eye. And
they will pick it up and realise instantly
that when you gave your child a bike,
you also gave them a childhood that
they would never forget, at this point,
you realise that everything you gave up
along the way and sacrificed was totally
worth it…..
All because you gave your child a motocross
bike.
Cheers, John Stander
Hi John
As you know we run
the Michelin Short
Circuit Series and as
you say, your whole life
just absolutely gets
consumed by it but it’s
awesome.
I have a friend,
Wayne Edwards, who’s
son Kyle, showed some
interest in riding a
Motard. I’m open to
facilitate any parent’s
path with this and have
many times before.
As we were driving to
take his son for his first
outing, I warned him
on how addictive this could turn out to
be if his son likes it. Well roll on a few
months and two motard races later, I
saw him at our last race and he was
saying that he is having the absolute
best time with his son working on the
bike traveling together and just sharing
the passion. In the end that is what it is
all about, sharing passion with your kid.
Take care
Clinton Pienaar

SPEEDING UP THE
KTM MOTOGP BIKE
Hi Clint,
Just my thoughts on Danni Pedrosa,
I reckon this little bugger deserves a
special mention today...apparently made
a huge difference to the development in
the KTM MotoGP program. I salute you
#26.
KTM been plugging away, year on
year making their bike better, have had
a long term team plan and strategy with
a goal in mind. Snapped up Pedrosa
when he became available. The team
principle has a sharp eye for talent. Like
Pedrosa says, it’s like being welcomed
into a family, who are keen to learn and
listen, versus the HRC dictatorship style
they seem to love so much. I reckon the
next two years that the KTM is going to
be the absolute best all round balanced
MotoGP bike on the grid.
Cheers
Dave Gunning
Hi Dave,
I think you are 100% right, even talking
to Trevor Binder (please go listen to the
full interview I had with him on the pod
cast on our website) he also reckoned
that Danni had a huge influence. Brad
said to his Dad that he actually can’t
fault the new bike. It’s good everywhere.
You know, what you saying about
factories not listening to their riders,
Honda and Ducati have been quite publicly
accused of this in the past by their
various riders. I just cannot believe how
quickly things change. In my opinion
Yamaha had the best depth in rider pedigree,
followed by Suzuki/KTM/Ducati
and lastly Honda and then Aprilia. But
all of a sudden the young team of KTM
with their new bike actually seems to
be the best collective team. Strange
how Honda have been caught with all
their eggs in the Marques basket?
Cheers
Clinton Pienaar
WHAT WE USED TO
RIDE
Hi Clint,
I was watching a video of a 4x4 riding
up the side of a dune or minedump,
which reminded me of our scrambling
days. My friend Derek and I started at
the same company 5 days apart. We
were bike mad. The biggest street legal
scrambler at the time was the Honda
XL350S. National service
intervened and then the
biggest scramblers were the
Suzy 400 and the Yammy
DT400. Derek got a brand
new DT400 and my identical
one was 10 months old. I
remember standing at the
dealers window drooling at
those gorgeous Yammies!
We used to ride at
Wemmer Pan which had
awesome dumps. We even
took our girlfriends there
and let them ride our bikes
on said dumps.
The DT400 used to pull
awesome clutchless 2nd
gear wheelies. It didnt like freeways as
the finning on the barrel was not big
enough, and sustained open throttle
cruising would cause pinking. No matter,
If one shattered a piston ( which I
did)- take the head and barrel off, shake
the bits of piston out with paraffin, have
a rebore, fit a new piston and rings and
off you go!
We used to also ride at Mindalore
which had a huge steep minedump. We
would hit the minedump at 80km/h and
not make it to the top.
One time a 125 2 stroke motocrosser
fitted with knobbies came along and
we were gobsmacked at how easy it
ramped several feet in the air over the
top. Fitting a rear knobby did the trick.
Good memories, good friends,
awesome simple bikes and great timesno
cellphones, no social media, a simple
bikers life-I miss it!
PS: I even ran the 400 down Rainbow
dragstrip. Flatout after 50 meters, it
did a 16 something!
Cheers,
Greg Baxter
23
Hi Greg,
You giving our ages away here, DT400,
what a thing that was. Absolutely
bonkers for the day. I came in a little
after that with the water cooled CR500
Honda. I still to this day want to take my
eldest son Daniel and put him on one
and let him have a rip. I can promise
you, and yes, he is faster that what I am
now on a 450 Husky Motard and they
think this bikes are everything. But I bet
when he stops after giving it a proper
burn, he will have a wild look in his
eyes like some one who has just come
across a wild lion per door in the park.
Thos things were wild, Honda has since
s then calmed done tremendously.
Glad you still riding, my Dad is 83
and still rides his bikes BMW R90S and a
BMW F800GT.
Cheers
Clinton Pienaar
I’M DOING IT WRONG?
This is the pic of me being the first rider
in SA to let a brand new Tiger 900 crash,
something that I am not very proud of.
I’ve now had two firsts in SA, the Tiger
900 and the very fast Kawasaki H2R.
I suppose that if you walk in the rain
you are going to get wet at some stage.
We’ve had a few readers come back to
my defence on riding off road standing
up, so thanks for that. To me it’s obvious
that while standing you have a much
lower centre of gravity and the ability to
move your weight around easier.
Reason for my crash, Kodak Courage,
Road tyres at road pressures and I
should know better. Sorry Bruce, I was
trying to get the perfect shot for the
opener of the Triumph launch story.

BRAD BINDER
WINS HIS FIRST
MOTOGP RACE
Given the ultra-competitive nature of modern MotoGP racing, it takes something
special to deliver a knock-out performance in dry conditions. To do it as a rookie
on a completely unproven bike takes truly exceptional talent - but it comes as no
surprise that Brad Binder was able to show that skill in yesterday’s Czech Grand
Prix.

25
The victory marks
the culmination of
Red Bull and KTM’s
long-term goals in
Grand Prix racing,
for the very first time having
taken a rider from feeder
series Red Bull Rookies
through their Moto3 and
Moto2 teams into MotoGP
and onto the top step of the
podium.
The former Moto3 world
champion came into the premier
class for 2020 as one of
the most hotly-tipped rookies
in years, with numerous MotoGP
riders quick to sing the
praises of the South African’s
testing performances before
the season had even got
underway.
And that was reflected in
Sunday’s race at Brno, where
the 24-year-old was able
to put on display the sort of
combination of raw talent and
supreme race-craft that only
MotoGP greats can show.
The first rookie to win in
his debut season since Marc
Marquez and joining a short
list that includes names like
Lorenzo and Pedrosa, there’s
still obviously much to learn
for the young Binder, something
that he himself was
quick to acknowledge after
the race.
Not just only his third race
in MotoGP, it was also his
first clean race after incidents
in both races at Jerez
saw him run off the track or
into other riders, something
he admitted was weighing
heavily on his mind coming
into the weekend at Brno.
“It’s unbelievable to think
where we are today, because
in Jerez 1 I made a
big mistake and took myself
out and in Jerez 2 I made
an even bigger one and took
someone out with me. It was
a tough week coming into this
because I was nervous about
ruining someone else’s race,
and I had to come here and
start fresh.
“Before I came to Brno I had
told myself that I needed to
take a step back in the race
because I had messed up the
first two by being overanxious
at the start. I did that, I didn’t
do anything crazy at the start,
and as I saw my opportunities
I made my moves without any
contact or trips to the gravel!”
However, it seems that once
Sunday’s race got underway
any apprehensions or nervousness
soon went out the
window for Binder. Able to
ride a completely flawless
race while many of his more
experienced rivals floundered
with tyre issues, he conceded
afterwards that his lack of
preconceptions might have
actually helped him.
“At the beginning of the race
I was following Fabio and I
could see that his tyre wasn’t
great but mine still felt quite
good so I decided to push on
and see what I could do. From
then it was just the craziest
ten laps of my life. It felt like
I did everything as softly and
as smoothly as possible,
because as soon as I tried to
do anything aggressive I got
crazy bumping.
“I knew we were going to
have a drop, and I held back
a lot at the beginning. I could
have smashed it on a bit but I
told myself to be smooth with
the throttle and on corner
exit.”
Despite Sunday’s amazing
success, it hasn’t been an
easy time in MotoGP so far
for Binder either. Well used to
hard work as he’s moved up
from domestic level championships
in South Africa and
the UK to Red Bull’s European
feeder series, his first
foray into MotoGP was rocky.
Struggling in pre-season
testing at the end of 2019, it

26 SuperBike
KTM’s first
ever MotoGP
winner’s
trophy
The passion inside this
garage is unmatched!
took the combination of more time
on the bike, some hard work and a
revolutionary new KTM RC16 to deliver
Brno’s stunning rookie result.
“When I did the first tests at the end
of last year I was last in both, and I
think it gave me some extra fire to
go into the off season and figure out
this MotoGP thing. When we came
back to Malaysia, I made a good step
forward and when everything got cut
in Qatar I used the months off to my
advantage.
“When I first rode the bike at the
end of last year I thought ‘oh my
goodness, I’ve got some work to do’
because it was so hard to ride. Then
I climbed on the new bike in Malaysia
and it was another world. It felt
so much more natural and easier to
ride than the old one.”
That hard work was needed throughout
the Brno weekend too, though.
Finding the going tough again on the
opening day on Friday, it took all the
skills of his veteran team to find how
to make Binder comfortable on the
bike.
However, with a hugely experienced
team around him, some of whom
played a pivotal role in taking Nicky
Hayden to the 2006 MotoGP world
championship at Repsol Honda,
Binder says they were able to comfortably
steer him through it.
“On Friday we were in a completely
different boat and I could barely
touch the throttle without feeling like
I was going to get thrown into the air,
but on Friday night the guys did their
homework. When we left the track I
spoke with my crew chief and Mike
and they said ‘don’t worry, we’ll sort
it out’ and they were right.
“Already from FP3 the bike felt so
much more stable and just really
good. It comes a lot from the
amazing package that the guys put
together - the bike is insane. I’ve told
them since the start, this isn’t bad
eh? I can definitely see places where
we have a big advantage over the
others and it paid off in the race.
“We understood really well going
into the race what we had to do to
get to the end, and I have an amazing
team behind me who came up with
an insane strategy and I couldn’t believe
when I managed to get into first
place. I thought ‘gosh, I’m leading a
MotoGP race,’ and I was even more
surprised when I saw a gap start to
Pit Beirer congratulating the team while Brad was
being drowned in media interviews

28 SuperBike
The moment Brad
Binder carved his
name onto a MotoGP
winner’s trophy
appear!”
So, with win number one
under his belt what’s next for
Binder? With the 2020 KTM
package looking so sorted it’s
hard to believe that Sunday
was a flash in the pan result,
and it’ll come as no surprise
now if he can go on to take
more victories before the season
is out.
And, with the bike now looking
every bit the match of it’s veteran
rivals and with a superstar
young talent onboard, it
may well be that Marc Marquez
is watching out for more
than just Fabio Quartararo in
2021.
Since that epic win they have
had two races at the Red Bull
ring in Austria where Brad
finished a credible 4th and the
following weekend finishing
8th, but only 4 seconds off the
winner Oliviera. In this last
race 4 KTM 2020 GP16 bikes
were in the top 10, so expect
big things from this Austrian
team for the rest of the year.

BMW SA REVEAL THE
NEW BMW F 900 R
AND F 900 XR
There is funky new middle weight toys in the BMW
stable and we go and spend a day on them.

31
BMW Motorrad expands its product
range for the popular mid-range
Roadster and Adventure Sport model
being the XR 900.
Despite the 2 models being built
on the same platform, they differ significantly
in character and positioning. Let’s start with
the Roadster being the F900R.
It’s been marketed as a purist motorcycle
and I think that’s because it’s a 2 wheeled
machine simplified. It’s a just a basic bike that
has all the attributes of motorcycling that we
love. But’s its design is funky and will appeal to
a younger buyer as well as the traditionalists.
I’ve never been a fan of naked bikes just
because of their lack of wind protection. The
route BMW took us on was twisty and interesting
with lots of urban twists thrown in, for this
application the bike is perfect. I loved the TFT
dash, the functions within the dash with max
lean angles and other niceties you’d want on a
new modern motorcycle. The dash is fitted with
BMW Connectivity as standard.
The engine architecture remains the same
as on the GS850 being a parallel twin though
the F 900 sees an increase in cylinder bore by
2mm, bumping displacement to 895cc in comparison
to 853cc. Likewise, the new powerplant
sees additional tweaks, including a redesigned
cylinder head for better flow, forged pistons,

32 SuperBike
BMW R 900 XR
the bike feels petty and if anything
I’m sure this will get put into the
900 GS which cannot be too far away
considering everyone else is into the
900 class now.
The two new models currently
set the technological benchmark
in the mid-range segment with
their high-quality standard equipment
(Connectivity, LED all round
as standard) and their wide range
of optional extras – in some cases
unique in this class (including Adaptive
Cornering Light, Keyless Ride,
Dynamic ESA, Riding Modes Pro,
Shift Assistant Pro, ABS Pro, engine
drag torque control (MSR), Dynamic
Traction Control (DTC), Dynamic
Brake Control (DBC), and RDC.
In addition to the standard
anti-hopping clutch, the new F 900
R and F 900 XR is fitted with engine
drag torque control (MSR) for the
first time. It prevents the rear wheel
from slipping as a result of abrupt
throttling or downshifting, thereby
ensuring even greater safety, I tried
this a few times with very hard braking
and sudden down shifts and the
automatic blipping of the throttle .
Two standard riding modes, ASC
and ABS. Riding modes Pro with
DTC, ABS Pro, DBC and MSR as ex
works options.
The new F 900 R and F 900 XR
already offer the “Rain” and “Road”
riding modes as standard. The
standard trim also includes ABS
and ASC Automatic Stability Control,
which can be disengaged.
With “Riding Modes Pro” as an ex
works option, the sporty characteristics
of the new F 900 R and F 900
XR can be experienced even more
intensively. The additional riding
modes “Dynamic” and “Dynamic
Pro”, Dynamic Traction Control DTC
and banking capable ABS Pro are
available, along with Dynamic Brake
Control (DBC) and the new engine
drag torque control (MSR).
As with the GS models in the
F Series, the new F 900 R and F
900 XR make use of a steel bridge
frame that integrates the engine as
a load-bearing element and a fuel
tank that is now back in its classic
position in front of the rider. Front
suspension is upside-down telescopic
fork and at the rear a double-sided
swinging arm with central
BMW R 900 R
suspension strut. The pre load is
automatically adjusted with a click
on the left button as most other
BMW’s on the road nowadays.
Fuel tank capacity is 13 and 15,5
litres on the various two bikes and
this should comfortably give over
300kms range ridden normally. The
fuel consumption was epic, none of
us got over 5l per 100 and we did
not go slow. Another nice safety
feature is the adaptive cornering
light with powerful LED lighting all
round. Braking is obviously ABS
and the suspension on both was
quite firm but sporty.
But what is the XR like to ride?

HONDA ENTERS
THE POWER
GAME
This is the strongest 1000cc standard Superbike we
have ever had on Noddy’s Dyno, 186hp to be exact
and the torque, although high up is quite linear.

37
It’s been out for a while already overseas
but the first few have just arrived in SA
recently and we were given a first ride on
them at Red Star Raceway, but was this
Fireblade going to impress? Honda has
a reputation of always making you drool
over the prototypes but when the actual model
arrives, too many guys with white cloaks have
had a hand at it with health and safety always
getting the better of them. Goodness sake,
this is the company that made the man eating
CR500 and has more world titles to their name
than any other brand. But they are a conservative
Japanese manufacturer, so was it going to
impress?
I first had a go on the outgoing model, courtesy
of Dave from Track Daze, just to refresh
my Fireblade memory, and immediately I was
back in my happy space, so planted so easy to
ride but yes, if I must admit, a little poor on the
power side, if you are not doing a claimed 200
nowadays you seem to be out of the ball park.
I then had a turn on the 2020 Fireblade RR-
R, there is a second model as well called the
SP, but more on that later on.
I’m a fan of the out-going model but this
new one makes it look dated, it’s small, the
keyless start is in a clever spot on the left
consol. The dash is super modern and I love
the way it goes through it’s sequence. At start

38 SuperBike
Awesome display
in the cockpit
area, and take
a closer look -
keyless!
up the bike has an off beat rumble,
still obviously typical four cylinder
but with a hot cam type of idle. The
Honda fitted Akrapovic pipe also
helping with this bark, the catalysts
are still fitted.
I head out of pit lane onto the
track for the first time. Honda has
been forced to go all out with this
bike because it’s had a few lean
years in WSBK success and local
sales, but it’s power that buyers of
liter bikes are after and Honda has
not been on the forefront, that is
until now. Blimey, this thing is fast
and it just keeps on revving was my
first impression and it turns and is
smooth on roll in as you’d expect.
Drafting in the MotoGP – dominating
HRC set up to get involved not only
with this bike but also the WSBK series
has paid dividends. I have never
been on a Honda this track focused
in my life, it’s a full on thoroughbred
race bike. Just on the power, as you
exit 2nd gear corners you can set
the level of wheelie lift control and
you can just pin the throttle as hard
as you like, I wish I had a picture
to show you of this but the photographer
always sits at corners and
this happens at the exit. It’s quite an
addictive feeling being half leaned
over on exit with the steering half
crossed up. Of course I thought
I was Marques even just for that
second. There are so many other
aspects of the bike you can set, from
engine braking to lift height to suspension
to traction control and did
I mention cornering ABS. I have no
doubt that once Clint Seller’s team
get’s their hands on this bike that
they will soon be winning races, it’s
that good, even in standard form.
I sneaked a short breakfast run
in on it the Sunday just to experience
the track focused RR-R on the
road and to my surprise it had lost
none of it’s street appeal, I loved
The physical dimensions
of the Fireblade’s engine
have been decreased.
A more compact layout
between the crankshaft,
countershaft, and main
transmission shafts shortens
the overall length of
the engine, while a new
starter arrangement that
rotates off the clutch shaft
rather than the crankshaft
shrinks width. The primary
gear has fewer teeth than
before to save space and
now transfers the starting
torque to the crankshaft.
the quick shift up and down
and yes you’d need to swot
up the handbook as there is
a myriad of settings, but the
revvy engine was no problem. I
was expecting the over square
engine to be more of a hurdle,
but it was not. Did I mention
it loves to scream and when it
does it’s like a rocket, I can’t
wait for a group top end test,
when last have we ever had a
Honda winner in that?
Noddy was quite
impressed with
the Honda being
the strongest
CBR RR-R SP
Second-generation
semi-active Öhlins Electronic
Control (S-EC) featured on the
RR-R SP uses a 43mm Öhlins
NPX fork. Its length also offers
greater freedom for geometry
changes. The rear shock is an
Öhlins TTX36 Smart-EC unit.
In conjunction with the
hardware upgrade, the Öhlins
Objective Based Tuning interface
(OBTi) now offers finer
suspension adjustment front
and rear; both can be set independently
from the default settings
and 3 individual modes
can be set and stored allowing
the rider to configure multiple
settings for a track, and switch
instantly while riding.
New Brembo Stylema
four-piston radial-mount brake
calipers are operated by a
Brembo master cylinder and
brake lever. The rear brake
caliper is the same Brembo
unit used by the RC213V-S.
Honda’s engineers leaned heavy
on trickle-down tech from the
MotoGP RCV machines, much of
that put to use in the new powerplant.
Combustion efficiency and
reduced friction were key design
goals for the over-square 999cc
inline-four. It’s also no coincidence
the 81mm bore and 48.5mm
stroke are identical to those of the
RCV213V-S—and radically different
from the 76mm x 55mm cylinder
dimensions of the previous engine.

that is still stamped indelibly on my mind
more than ten years later. Which says plenty
about Honda’s mighty V5 four-stroke, given
that barely an hour earlier I’d been riding
Alex Barros’s NSR500 — the last of the
vicious, 190bhp-plus V4 two-strokes that had
dominated grand prix racing for the previous
decade.
Within a few moments and a couple of
treads through its quick-shift enabled gearbox, the RC211V
was scorching past the blurred figures on the pit-lane wall
while I peered into the distance, already frantically trying to
find a braking marker at the end of what was suddenly a very
short straight. Even the NSR seemed almost sluggish by
comparison with the 990cc V5 on which Valentino Rossi had
just won MotoGP’s first title in 2002.
And the most amazing thing about the RC211V was how
controllable it felt, despite the ferocious acceleration from its
blend of 220bhp and just 145kg of weight. Having heard Rossi
talk about the speed and rideability of the RC-V, I’d expected it
to be more rider-friendly than the NSR, but I hadn’t expected
the differences to be so obvious. Whereas the two-stroke had
felt and sounded like the anti-social beast that it was, the V5
was polite, well-mannered — and so fast it drained my blood
into my boots.
That speed had been obvious throughout the RC-V’s debut
season, arguably the most impressive by any bike in the
history of racing’s premier class. Honda’s dominance was a
fitting reward for the imagination and commitment that the
firm had shown in developing a V5 for the big change to 990cc
four-strokes. In that first MotoGP season the RC211V won 14
of the 16 races, including the first nine, its only real rival being
the Yamaha YZR-M1 on which Max Biaggi won twice.
High impact
As I threw a leg over the RC-V’s seat on this end-of-season
HRC test, my view was of low screen and clip-ons, roughcast
top yoke, a small panel with round, black-faced tacho
reading to 17,000rpm, and a digital display showing lap time
and engine temperature. I accelerated out onto the almost
empty Valencia track, conscious of the crisp, ear-splitting
five-cylinder bark from the twin silencers as the engine revved
towards its 14,200rpm limit through the gears.
The handling was immediately impressive, but it was the
force of that amazing engine that made most impact. Whether
it was grunting out of slow turns with an effortless yet utterly
linear surge, or howling down that start-finish straight
towards the 200mph-plus top speed (Rossi hit 190mph even
here), the V5 was never anything less than breathtaking.
The Honda also had a phenomenally rock-solid feel through
the turns, feeling so neutral and well balanced that it almost
seemed to be laughing at my efforts to make it work hard.
Is it just us, or does moped-pipe-specialist
Polini seem a little out of place here?

44 SuperBike
“AT ROSSI’S SPEED THE RC-V’S TWIN-SPAR ALUMINIUM
FRAME WOULD HAVE COME INTO ITS OWN.”
But the RC-V could not be flicked around with quite the
ludicrous ease of the NSR, which at just 131kg was 14kg
lighter still.
Just as with the V5’s speed edge, I was slightly
surprised that the difference in agility was so noticeable
at my rusty ex-racer’s pace. At Rossi’s speed the RC-V’s
twin-spar aluminium frame would have come into its
own, because it was designed to flex slightly in corners,
reducing chatter and increasing feel when the tyres
were at their limits.
Honda’s efforts to make the RC211V rider-friendly
had paid off. I’d barely scratched the surface of its
vast potential, and had the feeling — more than
with previous factory bikes I’d ridden — that I
could have pushed much harder without getting
bitten. But my five laps were up before I found
the confidence to test that theory. Which, given the
RC-V’s rarity and almost incalculable value, was
probably just as well. SB
220bhp
Max power for a weight
barely more than 145kg
Ooooh, they’ve
crammed a lot in
there haven’t they?
Five cylinders, 20
valves, enormous
radiator. And still
under 150kg. Jap
bike firms can barely
make a moped weigh
less than that these
days.
SA Riders’ participation in various racing events abroad. Our products
offered will enable fans to support local riders abroad and assist with
racing development programs locally.
We have been developing SAGP FANHUB since January 2020 with five very clear goals.
• Create fun family themed big screen events, where fans can share their racing passion.
• Give fans access to very affordable and hosting experiences at MotoGP, WorldSBK and F1 events.
• Give fans access to all major racing heroes apparel affordably.
• Create a membership and rewards program to fund racing development.
• Give fans a voice and a platform to make their support count.
OUR PRODUCT
OFFERING
EVENTS
We are looking at hosting two types of big screen
events. Firstly we plan smaller occasion-based
outdoor big screen events where fans can enjoy
food and drinks hosted in a track theme. There will also be
apparel and travel packages available for purchase. There
will be multiple events held around the country for fans to
come and enjoy a great day out, and get branded by their
apparel of choice.
With regard to our bigger events, that will always be hosted
in track theme - we have been in discussions with Mr Pete
Beart, the current chairman of the Gauteng Toy Run organising
committee and Trustee of the Gauteng Motorcycling
Toy Run for the past few months. The Toy Run, has for
the past few years been looking at additional and varied
additions to the line-up of entertainment. The intention of
assisting up-and-coming racing stars, gels well with the Toy
Run’s stated object of assisting the less privileged as well
as promoting motorcycle riders image and we are pleased
to announce that the Gauteng Toy Run and SAGP FANHUB
are moving forward with our plans to assist each other in
APPAREL
We have been detailing with structures within
MotoGP, WorldSBK and F1 on importing large
parcels of Official Team and hero apparel. We will be
marketing it from our online platforms and at events. Fans
are very visible people and we would like to make access
to it as easy and affordably as possible for fans to
purchase.
reaching these goals.
At this year’s Gauteng Toy Run, in association with SAGP
FANHUB, currently planned for November 2020 (Covid
regulations pending) we are planning to turn it into a twoday
event, that can accommodate motorcycle importers to
exhibit motorcycles and products. Racing supporting industries
with all the fans hero apparel on sale, enticing fans
with our great travel offers to Grand Prix as well as a festival
to be held on the Saturday night. Loads of kiddies and family
entertainment and exhibitions will be available on both
days. These types of bigger events will be a great place for
fans to unite, support and enjoy their racing passion.
We are planning to host such events throughout the year in
all the major provinces in association with the Toy Run. Significant
portions of funds raised at SAGP FANHUB events,
will be earmarked for SA children’s activities. Helping and
giving to the less privileged remains a core synergy both
share. Entrance fee for the Toy Run will as usual be a toy
donation.
TRAVEL
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
With our 25 years established travel platform
and our global racing networks, we have
access to all sporting events as well as many
hosting experiences at each Grand Prix. This includes VIP
packages, access to paddock passes and even grid walks.
We are able to provide basic packages with awesome
add-ons, up to full blown premier team experiences. Our
travel packages will be end-to-end culminating in
awesome value experiences for fans, at affordable rates.

OUR BIG PLAN AT SAGP FANHUB
Our first goal is to unite SA support behind our local
riders participating in different racing championships
abroad, and secondly to create awesome value for the
fans they can access. We trust that the fans will help
SAGP FANHUB in supporting racing development programs
by becoming SAGP FANHUB members that will
help create opportunities for existing riders abroad and
new talent wanting to participate abroad.
Significant portions of annual membership fees will flow
to local racing development programs. South Africa
has many unsung heroes that have invested so much
time and effort in local racing development such as Neil
Harran, Clinton Pienaar, Robert Portman, Donovan Fourie,
and Gary Formato but to name a few and SAGP FAN-
HUB would like to channel
support to them in disperse
funds in local rider
development programs and
support our SA riders abroad
where needed.
Brad and Darryn have made
South Africa very proud and
we stand united behind them
as they rise up and compete to get onto the podiums
across the world. We are hoping that fans will become a
united supporting structure for all SA riders abroad and
help and support them to succeed as well.
TRIUMPH TIGER
900 RALLY PRO
AND GT PRO
Triumph Tiger Rally Pro and GT Pro enter one of the most hotly contested segments
on the planet – the middle-weight adventure bike sector.
First off the look.
The bikes are actually very handsome and
completely different from the outgoing model,
however you can see the family resemblance,
but they for sure look a little more sporty and
modern. I loved the head lights and the dash is
a nice big easy to read TFT dash with a myriad
of options and various looks to it.
Only two models of the five will be coming
to SA, which are the two top of the range Pro
models, South Africa historically leans towards
top end models.
The Tiger 900 Rally Pro is available in either
Matt Khaki, Sapphire Black and Pure White.
These colour versions feature updated graphics
and a white frame which actually lends a
sporty stance to the bike.
The Tiger 900 GT Pro is available in Korosi
Red, Sapphire Black and Pure White and feature
raised tank badges and new decals.
Both bikes compared to the outgoing 800
is either a step up in terms of touring comfort
of off-road prowess, with the main differences
being the suspension, wheels, dashboards and
riding modes.
The Engine.
Although I was impressed with the previous
model’s engine smoothness, I almost felt it
was a little like an electric engine, it never

FUNNILY ENOUGH US
TESTERS WERE SPLIT
ON LIKING THE NEW
“ROUGHER” MOTOR
OR NOT, I FOR ONE
LOVED IT BUT THEN
AGAIN, I DO LOVE
TWINS
throbbed, it eas more like a wind as the
revs picked up. This new 888cc, T-Plane
triple engine. With its off-beat firing order
and out of sync crankpins are a first in a
motorcycle, according to Triumph, and
was brought about to try and rough-up
the smooth-revving Tiger and make it a
bit more adventure bike-ish for want of a
better word. To do this, Triumph has placed
the crankpins at 270° - 270° and 180°,
giving the bike a 1-3-2 firing order in the
process. Now you have two small gaps and
one large gap between the pulses of the
new motor. The end result is very satisfying
and un triple like, the same but different if
you now what I mean. Mid-range torque is
up by a claimed 9%, with peak torque of 87
Nm arriving at 7,250 rpm and peak power
of 94bhp at 8,750 rpm. This might seem as
if everything is towards to top but it’s the
torque just after idle that make this bike
shift along nicely. Funnily enough us testers
were split on liking the new “rougher” motor
or not, I for one loved it but then again, I
do love twins.
We headed off road for a loop and this
is where I bought my farm, but in truth not
because of the bike but rather the playful
nature of the bike gave me a little too
much confidence for my “Kodak Courage”
moment in-front of the cameras. I
should know better but adventure bikes
with road tyres and road pressures need
to be handled with more respect. Lesson
learnt – again! The off road route we took
had a few woops and ruts and the Rally
Pro for sure is on the competition side of
suspension setup. I took on everything with
confidence. Daniel my son hit a stretch and
got a bit of a slapper but again, road tyres
and pressures were most likely the cause.
He was standing leaned forward when this
happened.
For the Rally Pro model, it’s got Showa
long-travel (240mm) suspension and
Off-Road Pro mode. The GT version carry
Marzocchi suspension (160mm travel), that
is more than up to the job of hustling the
machine along some tar road curves and
it actually coped with our off road section
quite nicely, with manual compression and
rebound damping adjustability. The GT Pro
is also fitted with a trick electronic rear
shock, allowing the rider to adjust rear preload
and rebound damping with the click on
a TFT dash.
Again the Rally Pro has rim laced 21 and
17 inch rims and the GT has 19 and 17inch
cast rims.
As with pretty much any other Triumph,
the fly-by-wire throttle is perfect, riding
modes covering Rain, Road Sport, Off-
Road, Off-Road Pro and User. Off-Road Pro

which have massive amounts
much for the dirt, rather stay in
Off-Road mode, where ABS still
stays on the front wheel.
Handling
So whats it like to ride on the
roa, well it’s only 5kgs lighter on
the spec sheets but once riding
the geometry upgrades makes
it flick a lot easier, I rode the
old model just to make sure my
feeling was correct. And for sure I
digress now, but I much more like
the new grunty character of the
engine.
Comfort
Before this bike, I’d be convinced
that on a long ride I’d need the
1200, but now I’m not that sure.
You see, all of a sudden you have
all of this off road prowess but
you still have the comfort, it’s
closed the gap to the 1200 a lot
on this side of the scale.
Conclusion
So this is the most closely contested
segment on the planet,
the fact that Triumph has placed
two varying products into it shows
that it is split enough to justify
two approaches. As I’m more off
road focused for me it has to be
the Rally Pro but it would seem,
even without a group test, that
this bike is good enough to be a
title contender, it’s that good.
TEA WITH THE
Clint invites himself to tea
with the Binder parents.
BINDERS
As mentioned in my editors
note, I had the privilege
of having tea with
the Binder parents Trevor
and Sharon at their
home in Krugersdorp the week
after Brad’s first epic win at Brno
in the MotoGP class. I was doing
a piece for radio for the Afrikaans
radio show called Wielle2wielle and
it was so interesting just shooting
the breeze with the two of them.
I’ve known them since the boys
started doing track days and it’s
been lovely seeing the development
of both the boys over the years
They candidly talk about wanting
to be there at Brno, the challenges
of getting him (Brad) back
and also how it worked in the
beginning of both boys’ GP careers
and living is Spain and why.
To hear the full interview,
please go to www.superbikemag.
co.za and click on the pod cast link.
It’s truly great being South African
now with our two boys doing so
well. I’m hoping that something
can happen to Darren like it did
for Aussie Jack Miller where he
completely by passed Moto 2, I’m
thinking Darren is too big for the
Moto 3 bike and his Dad agrees
that he is the biggest guy there in
that class.
Trevor also give a little insight
into the roll that Dani Pedrosa has
played in making the 2020 GP16 a
rideble MotoGP bike that it totally
appears to be. I mean in the last
race 4 out of the top 10 were KTM’s.
So make a cup of tea, sit back
and listen to the totally “Made in
South Africa” story which is the
Binder Brothers.

Made in India! Last summer I had an India group
on Nordkapp Tour. It’s was great fun from the start
to the end! This group picture is from the shores of
Some of the nights are in hotels
and some in nice holiday homes!
NORTH CAPE
- WHERE THE
ROAD ENDS
By Peter Ruotsalo
Together
is social
media…
romantic!?
North Cape, Cape Agulhas,
Ushuaia, Prudhoe Bay…
Route66, Ho Chi Minh Trail,
HighWay1, Manali - Leh
Highway… All places and roads to go
or to do for us bikers! In this story we
do not go to all of them, we ride to
the north, to North Cape… or as we
say up here, Nordkapp! Then we go to
the east to Murmansk! Where is my
up here? My up here is in Helsinki,
Helsinki Finland! The shortest way to
Nordkapp from Helsinki is 1518km.
From Cape Agulhas it’s 16299km.
Only 211h and 8,8 days without
sleeping and brakes! I drove down to
Cape Agulhas 10 years ago, 2010 in
1680h and 70 days with sleeping and
brakes. It was a 18987km version, 1st
I drove 1518km up to Nordkapp!
To/From North Cape
Oslo is a good place to start a ride
to Nordkapp. Views are great all the
One of
Santa’s
reindeers on
the summer
vacation!
In the north of Scandinavia you
will see many of these on the road
and on the sides of the roads!
way, but the problem is if you do not
have a lot of time, and most of us do
not have, Norway is very slow. The
speed limit is 80km/h all the way
and the police in Norway are, how
do you say it nicely? Pain in the ass!
There is a lot of radar control and
they are happy to give you a ticket
with a smile! Good thing is, that
you have a lot of time to look at the
views. My opinion (my opinion has
naturally nothing to do with that fact
that I’m Finnish :) is that the best
place to start a 2-week Nordkapp
circuit is Helsinki. Home of me, Alvar
Aalto, Mika Waltari, Martti Ahtisaari,
and Kimi Räikkönen. You know the
last one if you follow Formula1, the
Iceman! And many elderly people in
Namibia know Martti Ahtisaari, the
peacemaker! However, the capital of
Finland is a very nice small big town
or a big small town. A lot of green
parks and water. But I suppose Finland
is not really known from Helsinki!
What I have understood foreigners
known Finland from lakes, Santa
Claus and reindeers! Bikers who
follow MotoGP know Mika Kallio!
When the gods where creating Scandinavia
Finland got all the lakes, Norway
got all the mountains and Sweden
was the unlucky middle country!
But seriously, Sweden is also a very
beautiful place with a lot of space like
all Nordic countries, South Africa and
Russia! And if you drive a two-week
Nordic circuit with Russia, Helsinki is
clearly the best place to start and finish
regardless of my nationality. You
will get a very good picture of all 3
Scandinavian countries with numerous
different landscapes, views, and
roads with a great extra of the east,
Russia! Russia is a country, which
does not leave you cold!
Lakeland & Lapland

North Cape, where to road ends in Europe! Not a sun holiday
destination, but a magnificent place with it’s cold and windy
weather!
On the tour we
the Biker is
my dog 3,2kg and
There are lakes in every part of Finland,
but Lake Finland (south-east
part of the country) is literally full
of lakes. Finland has about 160000
lakes, many of them are so clean that
you can drink the water! According
to Mama Google, there are only 677
lakes in the whole of Africa and 27
from them are in South Africa! You
will not see every Finnish lake, but
many of them when you drive through
Lake Finland. Normally, when I am
on a motorcycle tour with a group to
Nordkapp, we stop for the first night
at a lakeside hotel with a beach in
Kuopio which is in the heartlands
of Lake Finland. The bravest bikers
can take here an evening and/or a
morning swim in lake Saimaa. Water
is never too hot!
Most of the Finnish people think
only about Finland when you ask
them about Lapland. But in fact,
Lapland is a huge area covering the
northern parts of Finland, Norway,
Sweden, and the north-west corner
of Russia. It’s is also more or less
the same area where the original
Sámi-people (people of the north)
come from. The size of Lapland is
about the same as Eastern Cape and
Free State together, about 300
000km2. Sámi people have their
own language and own culture. The
language is totally different from any
Nordic language and it has on official
status in Scandinavia! In the north,
you see Sámi also on the road signs!
The most visited person in the
north is not anyone from Sámi-people.
It’s Santa! What many bikers do
not know is, that the original Santa
Claus was born in Myra, on the shore
of the Mediterranean Sea in 300ACC,
Holy Nikolaus! Today Myra is a city
in Turkey, in the 300’s it was a city of
Roma! So the grand, grand, grand…
son of Holy Nikolaus, Santa Claus
has his headquarters in the north, in
Santa Village on Arctic Circle. This is
today also a place where every biker
stops on the way to/from Nordkapp.
Here you can meet other bikers from
all around the world, but naturally
also Santa Claus. He works here 363
days a year. Only days in the year
when he is not available, are 24th
and 25th December! If you go and say
hello to Santa, you can always wish a
new bike or bike tour or both for your
next Christmas present!
Midnight Sun
Midnight Sun alone is a good reason
to ride up to the north! Santa’s workshop
is literally on the Arctic Circle.
On the day of the summer solstice in
Cape Agulhas, the sun sets about 8
pm. Between Arctic Circle and Nordkapp,
there is no sunset for 1 month
on both sides of the summer solstice.
Especially for first-timers midnight

62 SuperBike
sun is something extraordinary! Driving
in the middle of the night with the
sun in the sky is something you do not
forget! And even for people from southern
parts of Scandinavia, the midnight
sun is every year on WoW! Officially I
do not drive with groups in the middle
of the night, but it is always possible to
take a midnight sun ride if you do not
have any alcohol in your blood! But it’s
also great to have a midnight sun sauna
with a couple of beers and saunamakkara!
Saunamakkara is something very
popular in Scandinavia. It’s an open fire
sausage which you eat after sauna while
you enjoy a cold beer! There are also
other interesting activities in the Scandinavia
during the midnight sun period
like midnight sun skiing competition
in Sweden, midnight sun marathon in
Norway, and midnight sun golf tournament
in Finland! But we bikers are not
interested in those things! :)
Nordkapp 71.1710° N, 25.7837° E
Nordkapp, the place where the road
ends in the northern hemisphere. A
must-do place for bikers. No one drives
up to Nordkapp because of its great
weather! Even in July, the daytime temperature
can drop as low as +5 degrees.
Not to mention that at the same time
it can rain diagonally with a crazy wind
which is trying to push your bike from
the road! Personally I do not know which
I like better in Nordkapp, extreme terrible
weather or sun & shine which also
happens. Sometimes the temperature
can go up to +25 and the sun is shining
from the windless blue sky. I have experienced
both!
‘Nordkapp Highway’ from Olderfjord
to Nordkapp is one of the most beautiful
rides in Norway. Every (except a few
tunnel kilometers) of its 128 kilometers
will make you smile inside your helmet!
There are practically no other residents
than reindeers on the whole stretch if a
couple of small villages of a few houses
are not counted! At the northern end
of the road, you will also find the small
town of Hånningvåg, which is a bit aside
from the road itself. All the trees are
also aside from the road because there
are not any trees at all when you start to
come close to the Nordkapp. The growing
season is too short up here for trees
to survive! It means also that you have
open curves with wide-open views! For
a biker summer is summer but if you
like to have an extraordinary boat cruise
in winter, Norway’s famous Hurtigruten
Peter the Great’s
Summer Palace
in St Petersburg.
It has the most
awesome palace
garden in the city!
line is operating a 7 days Northern
Light Cruise from Bergen to
Kirkenes! That time of the the year
when sun doesn’t rise for 1 month
on both sides of winter solstice between
Arctic Circle and Nordkapp!
Annually Nordkapp has about
250 000 visitors… 5-10 percent are
bikers! At the same time, Cape
Agulhas is getting maybe about 50
000 visitors. This is a guess. Mama
Google did not know any visitor
numbers of Cape Agulhas! My wild
guess is based on my own visits
to Cape Agulhas. Instead, Mama
Google knows a lot of Cape Town,
and Cape Town visitor’s numbers
are high. About 2 million visitors
in 2019! Bike-travellers enemy,
COVID-19 is cutting down all visitor
numbers to all places in 2020, but
let’s keep thumbs and toes for a
better 2021… and I keep also my
dog’s paws because she is a biker.
Biker Bubbles and she has been
with me to Nordkapp with our bike!
She has her own tank bag!
RUSSIA
Sachlik in different
terrible. He likes biking and his
good friend is the President of the
best known MC-Club in the country,
Night Wolves. Night Wolves Clubhouse
is also open for the visitors,
so if you visit Moscow someday for
one reason or the other, this is an
interesting place to see! Regardless
of Tsars and Wolves, Russia is not
a huge magnet for bikers. That has
also one very natural reason. Even
there are many beautiful places and
some great biking roads, a major
part of Russia is flat like Texas or
South Africa between Upington
and Vryburg! One other big reason
for unpopularity is politics. Most
of the bikers, even in Europe are
thinking that Russia is somehow
dangerous! But it’s not. In fact, it’s
safer than many southern parts of
Europe. Media’s Russia and real
Russia are two different countries
and I like the second one. I have
been driving in Russia many times
with and without groups and I have
never had any kind of problem with
Russians! Once my bike started
to push out flames from exhaust
pipes on Murmank Highway, but
that is a totally different story that!
And unlike in many other countries,
most Russians like bikers! And

Welcome to Russia. Paperwork done
an average Russian is very friendly
and hospitable under the unfriendly
surface which needs to be melted
first! If you communicate with a male,
then you can always offer a glass of
vodka! Sometimes I have wondered
why the surface is so tight. I have no
absolute truth to that, but I suppose
it’s because of the history. Russia has
a rough history and there has never
really been any reason to learn small
talk! For the majority of people, it has
been a history of surviving!
Murmansk Highway
In places like Nikel and Sputnik
on Murmansk highway between
Kirkenes and Murmansk life is still
very tough and there you do not see
much glory of any Tsars time. Not any
glory at all! They both look like they
are falling in parts because they are!
Sputnik is an old military town and
Nikel is an old mining town! Sputnik
you could not find from any map
during the soviet era! Murmansk
Highway from the Norwegian border
to Murmansk is very good as most
of the bigger roads in Russia today!
Now you can even drive with a Harley
from St Petersburg to Vladivostok
without any problem. Murmansk,
it’s one of a kind! While driving in
the north you have been used to
see small towns and villages. Now
you come suddenly to a big bizarre
metropolis! I have been several times
to Murmansk and after each time
I like it a bit more! It has 300 000
inhabitants and it is beautiful and
ugly at the same time depending on
what point you look at it! The old city
center and the suburbs around it are
a bit different! The reason Murmansk
exists is WW1. During that time
France was fighting together with
Russia against Germany, and to get
military equipment from France for
Russia, Russians made a railroad to
Murmansk, because of the warm Gulf
stream, the harbor in Murmansk can
be always open! Today harbor is used
mainly for shipping coal! After the
Soviet era, Murmansk has become
more and more popular among the
Finnish bikers. Most of the Swedish
and Norwegian bikers still see it as a
scary place! :)
Karelia
The biggest part of the area between
Murmansk and St. Petersburg is
called Karelia. Parts of it belonged to
Finland before WW2, but to be fair,
whole Finland belonged to Russia
before WW1. Thanks to the last and
weak official Tsar Nikolai II, Finland
got its independence from Russia
in 1917. That is one thing that the
Finnish rednecks are happy to forget
when they demand Karelia back!
However, Karelia is an interesting
area. When you drive there, you can
see that most of the motorbikes and
cars are modern and the highway is
good. But if you leave the highway
and drive to whatever small Karelian
village, everything looks is like
it was before WW2. No changes! In
the villages, you can also see Ural
motorbikes, built before WW2, and
still going strong or at least going!
An exception in Karelia from no
changes in Petrozavodsk, the capital
of Karelia Oblast. Russia is divided
into 46 Oblasts. Petrozavodsk is also
a vibrant university town with a lot
of coffee shops and restaurants!
And there is even a motorcycle club.
Petrozavodsk Night Riders!
St Petersburg
Murmansk Highway between Murmansk
and St Petersburg is 1 341km
long and it’s also kind of a miniature
Trans Siberia! As well it is also a total
‘climate change’ from the messy
backyard to the glorious front yard of
Russia! St Petersburg is everything

64 SuperBike
Nordkapp
Russia Tour
Map
Shortest
route from
that Nikel and Sputnik are not! St
Petersburg is full of the glory of the
Tsars era. It’s international, viral, and
vital with visitors from all around the
world. Here you can easily hear also
English what is spoken in Thrumpland.
However St. Petersburg is
huge with huge magnificent boulevards
where you see especially in the
weekends and evenings local bikers
cruising with their bikes. In St. Petersburg
you see also many Harleys.
Before St Petersburg had a big event
called Harley Days every 1st weekend
of August. But politics spoiled it as it
seems to do to too many good things!
Anyway, it’s very pity because Harley
Days collected tens of thousands
of bikers to the city every August.
Naturally, there is underground,
trams, buses and water buses in St
Petersburg but it’s also fun to drive
on big boulevards on the weekends
and evenings. And just outskirts the
city are Kronstadt, Peterhof (Summer
Palace) and Pushkin which make a
great 150km day tour!
Back to Finland
Depending on the group, time, and
weather I often take the fun coastal
road from St Petersburg to Vyborg
instead of the dull main road. Vyborg
is the last city before Finland. I do not
now what Lonely Planet says about
Vyborg today, but I always remember
what I read many years ago from
this independent traveler’s bible. It
said ‘typical unpleasant border town,
no reason to stop here’. I could also
have another opinion, but yes. It’s not
a navel of the world. One very nice
thing to do after the border crossing
is to take the old King’s Road and ride
like a king from curve to curve. On
the way is a unique red wooden Porvoo,
which is also a world heritage
city and a superb place to stop for a
coffee! And the Nordkapp circuit is
closed 50km later when you arrive at
the capital of Finland, Helsinki!
Jippii
- See you next time Russia!

APOCALYPSE
Pics by Kerry HughesThe

67
Race bikes need to be replaced every
so often, and what do you do with the
old race bike when you get a new one.
You sell it right?. Well not if you are
veteran racer of anything on two wheels
Paul Vollmer. He used his old race bike
as a base to custom build a Mad Max
themed beast called APOCALYPSE.
The bike was originally a Yamaha R1 SP in full
race trim, and for its time it was a great race
bike.
Paul did the original sketches for the bike
in 2018, but only started building the bike in
2020 with Glen at Ingmar engineering in Johannesburg.
Aston Nesbit of AN racing did all the
engine and electric work on the bike.
Apocalypse has got all the trick bits, a quick
shifter, a power commander and modifications
have been done to the cams amongst other
things, so it’s by no means slow, in fact at the
photoshoot at Red Star Raceway it proved to be
very capable on the track with its Ohlins suspension
up front and WP at that back.
Being fast or handling well was never really
the main point of building this bike, it was just a
benefit gained from having a good bike to start
the project with says Paul.
Apocalypse was built to be a head turner and
fun to ride, and when we saw people’s reactions
to it and the riders smiles when they got off the
bike, there is no doubt Apocalypse has achieved
those goals with distinction.
Paul enjoyed the build so much that he intends
to build a few more one of a kind bikes. You
don’t need to keep a look out for them because
if they are anything like Apocalypse you won’t be
able to miss them.

‘Gobert wanted a dancing girl in the pit!’
By Mat Oxley
SPANERMAN’S
Tale
Shenton worked with Anthony Gobert in 1995.
Gobert’s talent was dazzling but the Aussie
never knew how good he was

69
More gripping racing
yarns from Stuart Shenton,
the man who helped
Kork Ballington, Freddie
Spencer, Wayne Gardner
and Kevin Schwantz to world
title glory. And he might’ve done the
same with Anthony Gobert…
In 1984 Stuart Shenton had been
with Honda for 18 months when HRC
engineer (and later HRC president)
Satoru Horiike wandered up and
asked a question.
“He said, if Honda were to build
a 250, what should it be like?” says
Shenton, who had already played a
crucial role in Kawasaki’s domination
of the 250 and 350 classes during
the late 1970s and early 1980s. “So I
asked him straight: are you building
a 250? No, no, he said, this is just a
casual question. Going back to my
experience with Kawasaki, I told
him a 250 must be on the minimum
weight limit, it will need this much
horsepower and it will need twin
front discs. So at the end of 1984 I
went to Japan and there was this
250, a fabulous piece of kit.”
Having lost the 500 title to Yamaha
in 1984, HRC boss Youichi Oguma
wanted to make amends to Soichiro
Honda. So he asked Freddie Spencer
to do something that had never been
done before: win the 250/500 world
title double.
“Oguma never took the easy
path,” Shenton adds. “So I can imagine
him saying to Mr Honda: sorry,
we’ve messed up, so next year we
will win both world championships.
“We did some winter testing with
Freddie and we knew the 250 would
be competitive. The first event of
1985 was Daytona, where the race
was run under AMA rules, so the
bikes had to be five kilos heavier
than in GPs, and you weren’t allowed
to obtain that weight with ballast.
The AMA scrutineers knew our 250
would be at the GP limit, so they
knew we must have some weight
hidden on the bike. After every practice
they took off the seat, the tank,
the airbox, everything, trying to find
the ballast, but they didn’t find any.”
Spencer duly won the 100-mile
250 race, but still the scrutineers
weren’t happy.
“After the race they said they
wanted to look inside the forks.
The forks had magnesium bottoms,
carbon-fibre fork legs and all that
stuff. So I opened the forks, took out
the spacers, held them in my hand
and shone a torch so they could see
inside. They couldn’t see anything
and the bike was passed. What they
never knew was that the fork spacers
weighed about three kilos …”
Shenton’s job during 1985 was to
look after Spencer’s NSR250s, while
team leader Erv Kanemoto focused
on his NSR500s.
“Freddie was amazing and we
had a good little team: JB [Jeremy
Burgess] and George working on the
500 and me and Giles [Duides] on the
250. Erv was the overseer but there
were times when he was battling
to keep Freddie on the straight and
narrow, to keep him focused, because
obviously the important thing
was always the 500.”
Although Spencer did win the
250/500 title double there were times
when he was running at the very
limit of his capabilities, swapping
back and forth between very different
bikes, trying to give his engineers
useful feedback.
“By 1985 the bikes were getting
complicated but there was no
data-recording. Freddie was having
a bad time in 250 qualifying at Le
Mans. I was damn sure he wasn’t
using sixth gear, so I asked him if he
was sure he was using sixth. ‘Yeah,
yeah’, he said. Then I worked everything
out again and I was damn sure
he was only using the first five gears,
so I changed the gearbox for the
race according to what I thought and
Le Mans was one of his double race
wins. That was the kind of thing you
were battling with.”
The NSRs may have been the
trickest bikes on the planet, but that
didn’t mean HRC were above a bit of
bodging.
“The 250 came from the factory
with 34mm carburettors, while the
500 ran 36mm carbs. Keihin built
these fabulous sets of four magnesium
and titanium carburettors
for the 500 that were hundreds of
thousands of dollars a go. Oguma’s
sidekick, an old boy called [Kiyoshi]
Abe, said we should try some 36mm
carbs on the 250. I said we haven’t
got any. He just laughed, gave me a
bank of four-cylinder carburettors
and told me to cut them in half. I
thought he was joking, but he wasn’t,
so I used a hacksaw to convert this
100k set of four carburettors into two

70 SuperBike
sets of two carburettors and they stayed
on the 250 for most of the year.”
Shenton enjoyed working with
Spencer, the clean-living youngster who
stood out like a nun in a lap-dancing
club during an era of wild, hard-drinking
racers.
“Freddie had a very different outlook
on life from your average motorbike racer,
maybe it was because of where he
came from. He was a brilliant rider, but
he wouldn’t really say what was going
on with the bike. Perhaps it was because
he hadn’t had a lot of time to mature
and learn. He’d say stuff like there’s
something going on with the back, so
you’d ask him is it the tyre or is it the
shock? And he’d just say there’s something
wrong with the back. He was one
of those guys who would ride the wheels
off the thing on the day.
“He was a bit of an enigma to work
with. There was no social interaction,
but he was always polite and well-spoken
and he was fine. The unfortunate
thing about Freddie was his naivety.
Business-wise he got ripped off horrendously
by all the managers and lawyers
he had doing stuff for him.”
Shenton later worked with Wayne
Gardner during 1987, his title-winning
season, and 1988. Gardner might have
retained the 500 crown if HRC hadn’t
assigned a new engineering group who
got everything wrong.
“The 1988 bike was horrendous. HRC
had talked to Erv about flat trackers
and grip. For some unknown reason
they worked out that most flat trackers
have flat swinging-arm angles, so they
built the ’88 bike with a swingarm pivot
18mm lower than the ’87 bike. When we
got to the first race we realised there
was a quite a serious problem.”
In 1992 Shenton accepted an offer
to join Suzuki, working with Kevin
Schwantz. The Texan won the title the
following year – at his sixth attempt –
and attributes much of that success to
Shenton’s input.
“I inherited quite a low-engineered
bike and we messed our through 1992,”
says Shenton. “I pretty much lived in
Australia the next winter – we were testing
at Eastern Creek every week – and a
good bike came out of that.
“There are two types of riders. There
are the guys who tell you what they’re
feeling and leave it up to you and the
other engineers to interpret that. Then
there are the others who try to engineer
their bike, which in my experience isn’t
Celebrating Wayne Gardner’s 1987 world title. From left:
mechanics Wilf Needham and Shenton, crew chief Jeremy
Burgess and WG’s manager Harris Barnett
always the best way. I guess there’s
a happy medium. Kevin was good,
he was very descriptive and could
pin stuff down.
“We did a test the week before
the Japanese GP, trying out the
latest chassis from the factory and
it was by far the best chassis we’d
had. We were going straight from
Australia to Suzuka and we didn’t
have time to ship the bikes, so I
hand carried the chassis to Japan
with my luggage. I’m near the top of
a 60-metre escalator in Tokyo train
station with the chassis strapped
to my back when the strap breaks.
The chassis flies down the escalator,
wiping out all these Japanese
people on the way down, then lands
with a bloody great clunk at the bottom.
Oh my God, the chassis we’re
going to use for the Suzuka race is
bent!”
But the chassis wasn’t bent and
Schwantz took second in the race,
a fraction behind Yamaha’s Wayne
Rainey, and went on to win the title.
Everyone knows how that season
ended: with Rainey crashing at Misano
and breaking his back. Shenton
and Schwantz still feel guilt for
what happened that day.
“That weekend we were having
problems, we didn’t have a suitable
front tyre. The soft tyre wouldn’t
go the distance and the hard one
wouldn’t give us the grip or the lap
time. So we decided to go with the
soft because we wanted to push
Wayne into a mistake, obviously not
having any idea of the consequences.
It’s something in the back of our
minds with Kevin and me to this day.
We’ve talked to Wayne about it and
he’s very gracious about it. He said,
‘Hey, I would’ve raced Kevin how I
raced him anyway’.”
Shenton enjoyed working with
Schwantz. “Kevin was a fantastic
team player. He’d sweep the floor

71
Freddie Spencer 1985
Belgium Grand Prix on
the Honda NSR250
and help load the truck – he wanted
to be part of the gang.”
After Schwantz retired, Suzuki
got lost in the wilderness. They had
a high turnover of riders and no one
leading development. After Daryl Beattie
came former World Superbike
champ Scott Russell, who joined Suzuki
halfway through 1995, to replace
Schwantz.
“Scott was an interesting character
– a lovely guy but a bit all over the
place. We were doing a winter test at
Eastern Creek. I get a phone call in
the middle of the night and it’s Scott.
Oh, where are you, downstairs in the
lobby? ‘No, I’m still in America.’ What
are you doing in America? ‘I don’t
think I can do this anymore.’ Look,
get yourself on a plane and we’ll have
a talk. It was only later I realised that
some of his recreational pursuits
make you a bit edgy and paranoid and
doubt yourself.”
After Russell there was Anthony
Gobert, who joined Suzuki for 1997.
Out of the frying pan and into the
fire…
“Gobert was one of these guys
who you get every now and then:
don’t change anything on the bike,
I’ll just ride it. By then we had data.
He’d come in and you’d see that he
was so hard on the brakes that the
suspension’s bottomed out and he’s
just hanging onto it. So we said we
can put stronger springs in there or
more oil. ‘Nah mate, don’t change
anything’.
“We saw the most incredible
brake temperatures with Gobert. If
he had been able to apply himself
and turn up every weekend, fit and
healthy, with the right sort of focus,
he would’ve absolutely been something.
“I always knew it was going to be
an interesting relationship. I hadn’t
met him but [Suzuki team manager]
Garry Taylor and [Suzuki race boss]
Mistuo Itoh went to Australia to
sign him. On his way to signing the
contract he wrote off his brand-new
$250,000 Porsche by jumping a red
light and it hadn’t fazed him in the
slightest.”
Shenton met his new rider after
the final 1996 race at Eastern Creek.
“We were packing up our garage and
a scruffy urchin with a few mates in
tow was hanging around the back of
the garage. Then one of them says to
me: ‘g’day Stuart, I’m your new rider,
I hope you’re fucking ready for me!’
And that was Anthony Gobert.
“At our first test with him at Eastern
Creek we were doing his first debrief,
with all the Japanese engineers
sitting there, pens hovering, waiting
to take notes and get his first impression
of the bike. And he says, ‘Well, I
need two things: I need a cage in the
back of the garage with a dancing girl
in it and we’ve got to get some beers
in the fridge’. Then he gets up and

72 SuperBike
walks out. There were six Japanese
engineers sitting around the table
and they didn’t know what to do,
what to say or what had just happened.
With his talent, he should’ve
been world champion, but it was
never going to happen.”
Before Gobert, Shenton had won
world titles with Spencer, Gardner,
Schwantz and Kork Ballington. So
who was the best of them all?
“In terms of fantastic natural
talent I’ll be a bit controversial and
say that Freddie was second. The
guy with the most natural talent was
Gobert, but he didn’t realise what
he had and he wasn’t able to apply
it. At the other end of the spectrum,
and he’ll hate me for saying this,
was Gardner. He beat the other guys
by sheer guts and bloody-minded
determination. He had to really work
at it and apply himself. Then you’ve
got someone like Kevin in the middle
who had the talent, worked at it and
applied it.”
LONGTERM RIDE REPORT
THE LIMOUSINE OF THE
ADVENTURE BIKING
WORLD
If you want to do a lot of pillion adventure bike riding, look no
further, this is the most comfortable and smoothest adventure
bike out there, bar none!
Honda SA have very kindly
swopped my base 1100 for
the CRF1100L DCT Adventure
Sport model now with
Electronic Suspension.
At first from a distance at a quick
first glance it does not look that different
to the outgoing 1000 cc model,
rember I rode one for six months, but
look a little closer and every damn
thing has changed. Hop on the bike
and it’s a completely different model.
The dash, the tank, the screen, the
clocks, everything is different and it
gives more space, hell I love advancements,
the old one was not bad
but now seems completely out dated.
Embarrassingly , I’ve only done
120kms on this bike, I actually rode
it today for the first time so I cannot
report on it properly. But these are a
few stand out points for me right now.
Africa Twin was introduced to
us in 2016, remember I went on the
1st Quest event in 2017. Since then
Honda updated the Africa Twin in
2018, offering the more-ADV ready
CRF1000L2 Adventure Sports models
alongside the base models. The bikes
returned in 2019 as a carryover with
new color schemes, but there are
many changes for 2020.
Meet the Honda CRF1100L Africa
Twin. As the name says, the engine
grows to 1100cc. Honda has also
updated the electronics, and once
again offers the Adventure Sports ES
version which this one is now.
These are my 8 stand out features:
The water-cooled, overhead-cam,
parallel-twin engine receives an 86cc
displacement increase, growing from
998cc to 1084cc.
The 2020 Honda CRF1100L Africa
Twin’s frame is updated for optimized
for handling.
Due to the use of a six-axis IMU,
the new CRF1100L Africa Twin has
more advanced electronic aids.
Functions include wheelie control,
cornering ABS, rear-lift control, DCT
cornering detection, and cornering
lights.
The new Adventure Sports ES
model now features electronic rideheight
suspension. The Adventure
Sports ES model is also updated
with tubeless wheels, heated grips,
accessory socket, larger skid plate,
aluminum rear rack, and a larger 25
litre ank over the base model’s 19 lite
tank.
The seat also got lower—from
871mm to 848mm.
The 2020 versions have a new 6.5-
inch TFT color touchscreen display
that is compatible with Apple Car-
Play.
Wheel sizes are still dirt-oriented.
The 2020 Africa Twin has a
21-inch front and 18-inch rear, both
wire-spoked wheels. The Adventure
Sports ES uses tubeless tires.
Cruise control is now standard on
all Africa Twin versions.
I’m so looking ford to taking my
wife for a ride, bet you she will be impressed
on how smooth I can change
gears with the DCT.

AND WE’RE BACK
RACING AGAIN!
After what seemed like an eternity we are back at it
again, but with strict Covid 19 restrictions.
The world has changed the
last few months but thanks
to the perseverance of the
FIM and in turn MSA, we
eventually got it right to be able
to return to circuit racing. Yes, no
spectators are allowed and that
make’s our days seem a little
dreary but it does not stop the action.
Sadly it would seem as if lots
of the racers are a little rusty as
we’ve had a lot of incidents on the
track with crashes and mistakes.
Luckily none of them too serious
and all will heal with a little time.
What is great about this year is
we have the guys from Steamit360
Live Streaming our events and
anybody anywhere in the world
can sit either on their phone, in
front of a computer or TV and
you can watch our series live or
recorded. It’s there all the time
on www.streamit360.tv, thanks to
RAD KTM and a few other sponsors
for making this possible.
Then if you live far away but
would still like to be able to be
more part of the action, we have
an active Facebook page Super-
Bike Mag Short Circuit Series
where you can go see all our photos
and comments of all involved.
Please just go follow us.
I’ve always said that it is the
kids that feed our sport and
luckily with the backing of Linex
Yamaha and KTM SA we have
put three little “celebrity” bikes
on track for youngsters to get a
feel for it and have a go. This has
largely contributed to adding new
people so thank you guys, it’s
much appreciated.
Then in our big class, the 450
SuperMotards, we now have 5
classes for these guys with over
60 participants, our blue chip
class being SM1/X is seriously
something to behold. It’s our
country’s best riders all on equal
bikes, the top 12 qualifying within
a second of one another. The end
result is racing in it’s most spectacular
form. Two or three abreast
sliding into corners with the tyres
screeching and bikes roaring. I
had a few random people say that
it’s the most spectacular form of
racing available now, and being
totally un-biased, I have to agree.
Our next event is on the 19th of
September at V Town, let’s hope
the spectator restrictions gets lifted
and we can invite you guys to
come and watch again, but if not,
go to the above web site and have
a look at what you are missing.
Dorren Loreiro is an absolute machine
sliding his Husqvarna FS450 into the
turns
Chris Wright, the rest are getting closer
but he still has the CBR 150 Championship
under control, the boy gives the rest a very
high bar to follow. They are a class act.

79
Keith Botha of Race-Day TV Fame was our celeb rider
for V Town, he came back exhausted but loved it and will
be back. TK was our rider in the SM1 class with our road
tester Juan Ballester fighting for positions in SM2.
Zontes Cup grid
Grant Frerichs leading Dorren Loreiro,
Brandon Goode and Aston Nesbitt

80 SuperBike
Jaco and John from Zontes Racing have done a deal with Ducati Man Jos Matthysen and he is taking over their fleet of
310 race bikes. They are still going to be part of the series but he has big plans to expand the reach into new riders with
plans of intercompany races instead of golf days and stuff like that. What I love is to see the man has the long game in
sight and he is working towards a more 2 wheeled mobilized world, and for this we cannot fault him.
Streamit360 Live TV on the day!
Prize giving, or trophy hand-over ceremony more
like, is also a strange world for all of us. We cannot
call people together, as one class finished and 30
minutes has transpired, we can call up the three
riders to stand on their own, collect their own trophy
and pose for a pic with a mask on. But we are complying
and we are thankful for at least being able to
do this. Cameron Hackart in picture.
Our National SuperBike Champ Clint Seller also took
part in our CBR 150 class race and only achieved a
5th place overall for the day against the kids, Yes
power to weight does play into their advantage but
still, it’s Clint Seller and the kids loved having him
with us. Clint did comment that the kid are riding
hard and that some of the passes were a little hard
and not so well coordinated but that he would be a
back.

A short note from Neil Harran:
Hi Everyone, thanks for an eventful day yesterday. I
believe that it was a successful one, notwithstanding
the amount of crashes we had throughout the day.
Well done to Jason van Breda on his maiden win
as well as Cayden Roberts on his maiden podium.
I’m truly excited with the level of racing that the
kids are handing out to us and believe that the future
is bright for motorcycle circuit racing in the country.
I’m certainly proud to be a part of the family
that we are forging at present. Hats off to all of you
parents for the support and time that you are all
putting into your kids. I can assure you that in the
near future you will reap the benefits of this program
that we are all such a part of. The character, discipline,
respect and courage these kids are displaying
is nothing short of amazing.
I can personally see the improvement in their
confidence and self-esteem coming through and the
wonderful little characters that are being forged.
This really bodes well for all of their futures.
We’ll done Mom’s and Dad’s, you should all take
a bow.
Craig Roberts’ reply
We love you Uncle Neil! Thank you for all the years
of hard work that you, Janine and the SAMRA team
continuously put into the development of our youngsters.
My eldest son who is now 19 is a product of your
academy and I can’t thank you and the program
enough for everything you did for us.
From the character building exercises to all the
great memories created, it has been an absolute
blast to be part of SAMRA. Unfortunately for you I
am going nowhere because Blake who is now 6 can’t
wait for his turn to ride the NSF.
You are a beaut Harran!
Nicolas Davies winner if
the HJC helmet.

TECH3 WINS
WITH OLIVEIRA
Oliveira wins jaw-dropping Styrian MotoGP as
Espargaro also takes podium finish

85
Red Bull KTM toasted their
second MotoGP victory in
the space of two weeks
with Miguel Oliveira’s brilliantly
judged first-ever success at
the Red Bull Ring for the BMW M
Grand Prix of Styria. The 25-year
old not only claimed the first win
for his Red Bull KTM Tech3 team
in MotoGP but also for Portugal.
Pol Espargaro fought for the
checkered flag until the last corner
and scored his second career
podium in 3rd place. KTM had all
four RC16s in the top ten; more
than any other brand. Celestino
Vietti posted KTM’s second Moto3
victory in a row.
A second Grand Prix in the
space of seven days took place in
the picturesque but challenging
setting of the Red Bull Ring in
Spielberg. Espargaro set off from
Pole Position for the fifth outing
of the season. The Spaniard
launched from P1 for what was
the first Pole for the factory (and
the rider) in less than four terms
in the premier class of MotoGP
and just four years after KTM had
announced their MotoGP plans
and ambitions at the same circuit.
An accident midway through
the 28-lap spectacle produced
the red flag for an air fence to be
repaired at Turn 1. The 900th premier
class race was restarted with
a 12-lap distance and with all four
KTM RC16s hunting the leading
group. Espargaro surged to the
front and engaged in a thrilling
duel with Jack Miller on the last
circulation. Miguel Oliveira was
also extremely close and poised
to make the most of any mistake.
When Espargaro and Miller ran
deep into the final turn Oliveira
read the situation to perfection;
powering past to claim the checkered
flag on what was his 150th
Grand Prix start. The result was
also noteworthy for Red Bull KTM
Tech3, representing their maiden
triumph in the premier class

86 SuperBike
in just their second campaign wearing
KTM colors.
Brad Binder secured 8 points for 8th
position and remains 4th in a very close
world championship table. The South
African rookie was again very quick to
make ground with the front-runners.
Iker Lecuona charged to 10th. The Spaniard
ended a positive fortnight at the
Red Bull Ring: he notched his best ever
MotoGP classification the previous Sunday
with 9th and then his second top-ten
result at the Styrian event.
KTM are 3rd in the Constructors
standings, just 6 points away from the
top. Their excellent progress as the
youngest manufacturer at the highest
level means they now concede their concession
status and will join their rivals
in terms of testing, wildcard and engine
limitations. An achievement in itself.
Oliveira’s success ended Ducati’s clean
sweep at the Red Bull Ring since 2016.
Miguel Oliveira: “I’m very emotional…
there is so much I want to say but I cannot
at the moment. A big thank you to all
the people that believed in me starting
with my family, everyone in the team,
sponsors and the Portuguese crowd.
Thank you so much for your support.
This is history today for me and my
country and I couldn’t be happier to do it
here in the home of KTM and Red Bull.”
Pol Espargaro: “Anyone can win those
kinds of races! Pretty crazy. I was
fighting with Jack until the last corner
and Miguel was able to profit but that’s
racing. It was a beautiful race. Anyway,
we made the podium, we are up here
and I’m super-happy.”
Brad Binder: “It was a good race. The
first one was going really well and I was
slowly catching up ground. To get up to
6th was already great. I felt really, really
good. Unfortunately with the red flag
and the restart I didn’t make the best
decision with the tires and really struggled
to stop, even running off at Turn
1 but I was able to come back to 8th.
All-in-all we should be happy. I gave my
best out there and the bike was fantastic.
The team worked really well and I’m
super-excited for the next race. I think
we can do a good job at Misano.”
Iker Lecuona: “For sure, I’m really
happy. I finished in the top 10 again. In
the first race, I overtook many riders, I
had a very good pace and I was in ninth
position. The best for me was to pass
Miguel Oliveira in
shock at the post
race interview
Pit Beirer watching the
race whilst touching
the spare bike as a
good luck charm...
paid off!
Iker Lecuona
[Valentino] Rossi, because he was
always my idol. This moment was
very important for me. In the second
part of the race my start was not
great, I lost some positions, but I
came back, stayed in 10th position
and was having some great fights.
I’m really happy. Thank you to my
team. Thank you to KTM for the
opportunity and congrats to KTM for
Pol and obviously to my teammate
Miguel!”
Mike Leitner, Red Bull KTM
Race Manager: “An unbelievable
race. We had all four bikes in the
top ten at our home race and with
two riders fighting for victory. Pol
was pushing all the way with Jack
on the last lap and we know that

87
Both Red Bull Factory KTM and Tech3 KTM Teams celebrating their double podium at the home of KTM
Binder braking hard into turn 3
the last two corners are crucial
at this track. Both went wide but
fortunately Miguel was in a great
position to bring home the race and
we’re super-happy about that. Both
riders deserved it because Pol rode
so well. Brad and Iker also scored
good points and we have shown that
the performance of the RC16 is really
there.”
Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports
Director: “It is hard to find the right
words after such a wonderful day. I
remember so well our first GP in Qatar
when we started from last place
and my words to our CEO Mr Pierer
that we would turn things around and
park our bike on the other side of the
grid. We’ve had a double today: Pole
and a win at our home Grand Prix
with Moto3 as well and all four MotoGP
bikes in the top ten with two on
the podium. The project overall has
been amazing. We have gone our own
way and that approach is paying off.
The team spirit and the atmosphere
with so many people here at the circuit
and back at the factory pushing
like crazy bringing the results: it’s

88 SuperBike
Hervé Poncharal thanking his number one
rider after Oliveira gave them their first ever
Grand Prix win from some 40 years of trying
as a satelite outfit
like a dream come true. I will
need some time now to realize
what has happened these last
weeks.”
Miguel Oliveira
Hervé Poncharal, Red Bull
KTM Tech3 Team Principal:
“What an incredible
day, incredible emotions! It
is something like forty years
we’ve been in this business
and we never won a MotoGP
race. Today our dream came
true. Here in Austria, which
is in front of our title sponsor
Red Bull, in front of the KTM
management, our manufacturer.
I would like also to
dedicate this victory to Miguel
because he has been pushing
a lot. Year one was not easy;
he was injured the second
half of the season. We’ve been
fast since the beginning of
this year, the bike improved,
he improved. Now we’ve done
it. I’m very proud to see two
KTMs on the rostrum. Clearly,
this is now one of the bikes to
beat. So let’s celebrate tonight
and let’s hope there will be
some other exciting days like
today.”

ROSSI’S WORDS ON
THE CRASH!
For those who watched the MotoGP and the crashes, here is Valenito’s comments.
SPIELBERG - Yamaha’s Valentino
Rossi has urged riders who make
their way up to the premier class to
exercise caution when fighting for
track positions to avoid a repeat of
the horror collision that halted the
Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The red flag came out early in the
race when Franco Morbidelli’s Yamaha
collided with the Avintia Ducati of
Johann Zarco, with their cartwheeling
bikes nearly taking out Rossi at
turn three of the Red Bull Ring.
The two bikes missed the 41-yearold
and teammate Maverick Vinales
by inches as they slowed down to
negotiate the turn and Rossi looked
visibly shaken when he returned to
the garage before the race’s restart.
“It was so scary, it was terrifying,”
Rossi, a seven-times premier class
champion, said. “For me, now everybody
is very aggressive but also from
the small classes.
“I think it is good to be aggressive
because everybody tries to do the
maximum, but for me we don’t have
to exaggerate, because we need to
remember that this sport is very
dangerous.
“You need to respect the other
riders that are on track with you. We
can’t forget this sport is very dangerous,
especially in a track where you
have long straights and you’re always
going 300km/h.”
Rossi, who finished fifth, said he
had spoken with Zarco who explained
that he did not brake on purpose to
catch Morbidelli off guard.
“He went very wide in braking and
he slammed the door in the face of
Franco,” Rossi added. “With this bike
when you ride 300km/hr, you have
the slipstream, so Franco didn’t have
any chance to brake.
“I was with Maverick when we entered
turn three and I felt something
coming towards me. I thought it was
the shadow of the helicopter because
sometimes it crosses the race track.
“But then Franco’s bike passed me
at an incredible speed and also the
bike of Zarco jumped over Maverick.
We were very lucky, but we hope this
type of incident is a lesson for riders
to improve their behaviour in the
future.”
