This is part of a reoccurring series.Darren Lauser • Cork, IrelandA Personal TouchMembers of VMware Toastmasters—acorporate club in the information technologysector in Cork, Ireland—are no strangers toonline meetings. From a technology perspective,that would seem like an advantage, butgoing online with our Toastmasters meetingscould have been a disaster. In-person meetingswere a welcome break from our screens. Toastmasters was where members sawfaces and chatted casually—something hard to translate to the virtual world.The 2019-2020 President, Darren Lauser, wasted no time figuring out how tomake online meetings as social as in-person meetings. Darren is the first to log onand has his camera on at every meeting; he welcomes members by name as theyjoin and chats with everyone while waiting for others. This is a huge differencefrom a work meeting where everyone waits silently until the attendees have joinedand jump straight into the content. More people tend to speak up during thechat at the start of the meeting or during Table Topics® if they have been greetedpersonally at the beginning of the meeting.As a corporate club, the challenge was to make sure that online Toastmastersmeetings didn’t fall into the humdrum flow of everyday work meetings, but that theywere different, friendly, and interactive. Thanks to Darren, they’ve been a success!Nominated by Orla Dowling, VMware Toastmasters of Cork, Ireland.Tanay Rajwal • Pune, Maharashtra, IndiaA Virtual WarriorTanay Rajwal quickly became the go-to person fortechnology questions in his Bibvewadi ToastmastersClub and clubs all over District 98. He introducedan online voting platform for his club to make themeeting hassle free when counting votes. Tanayalso recorded club meetings and uploaded them toa shared drive where members who were unableto attend, or were curious to watch the meetingagain, could do so. Soon, his help was requested forrecording several joint club meetings and speech contests.Tanay even served as the “Zoom Master” for a District 98 event with 300attendees, and it went as smoothly as it possibly could! Her dedication tohelping members feel comfortable usingZoom inspired many to embrace the joy ofconnecting online. One member attributedher ability to compete in an online Divisionspeech contest directly to Cynthia.Cynthia always displays a positive andsupportive attitude and truly leads byexample. She visits online clubs, identifyingthose holding successful meetingsand those needing help, and she connectsfledgling clubs with District leaders whocan help them.But she didn’t stop there. Cynthia sawthe need for Pathways training and forpeople to have more speaking opportunities.While Cynthia admits she doesn’tknow all the answers, she works withothers to provide training and establishspeak-a-thons for those needing tocomplete educational goals. Cynthia setsup District training based on identifiedneeds and finds the appropriate people todo the actual training.
