I wasscrolling throughrandom tattooInstagrams when Istumbled upon a fairlywell-done Hitlerportrait (it was postedon an artist’sInstagram whospecializes in coveringracist/hateful tattoos).Of the person whoreceived the tattoo, Iimmediately thoughtthe obvious thought:What a piece of shit.My next thought,though, was maybeeven more weighty:Who the fuck would13tattoo that?
Tattoos are, after all, a privilege and not a right. An artistcan refuse any concept they disagree with and, on thecontrary, can agree to anything they see t. I contemplatedthe responsibility of the artist in such a scenario; Iwondered if their compliance indicated the silent supportof whatever image they were inking; I asked myself, if theytattooed it, do they believe in it? To me, the answer wasyes, they must.I thought that was going to be my article. I was going tointerview a handful of artists I know and ask them “Are youwilling to tattoo whatever your client wants, even Hitler’sface?” And all of the artists were going to say “Fuck no,”and I was going to showcase how respectable tattoo artistsdon’t participate in shit they don’t believe in or support. Myquestion, however, was met with mixed responses. Initially,I was both dumbfounded and disappointed. I was caughtsomewhere between what the fuck? and what now?As I read through each artist’s reasoning, though, I felt thearticle refashioning itself. I realized it wasn't about exingthe awless and uniform moral compasses of a few artists Iknow. Rather, it’s about registering di ering perspectivesand navigating the rocky terrain of representation. I wantthis survey to do nothing more than authentically explore alongstanding curiosity of mine (and maybe yours, too): Areartists—ones of all kinds—represented by the content oftheir work? In what circumstance do one's own morals andvalues go out the window?Initially, I was ready to whip something together thattapped into only one perspective. That would’ve been amistake. Instead, turn the page for ten.
