I became adepartmental manager and two years later, an AVP.A few years after that, they made me president.That was one great snapshot of a sunrise in mycareer.Do you have any snapshot-worthy sunrises toshare?I have one more sunrise to share. Come with medown the memory lane.I was 39when I got a call from Toastmaster InternationalPresident Jon Greiner. It was almost mid-day on abeautiful Sunday, as I was strolling along thebaywalk – the sun was out and shining brightly but itwas breezy and chilly that July.“Hello Michael, I called to let you know that yourDistrict, ended its term ranked #1 in the world.Congratulations to you as the District Governor, andto all the toastmasters of District 75!”That moment, everything around me went into slowmotion. I have been sleepless anticipating THE CALLfor a couple of days already, not knowing if theToastmasters of District 75 have achieved enough toearn the #1 ranking. Three weeks prior, the lastupdate placed us at #6 out of almost 80 districts. Weknew, though, that we had a fantastic chance ofclimbing up to the top as numerous recognitionsand charters were still on their way to theheadquarters.To get to that moment though, we would have tostart my toastmaster story 12 years prior. In 1993, Iwas conscripted, drafted and dragged into theToastmaster program when Petrochem (where Iworked) decided to form a corporate club.

It took me 6 months intomy membership before I managed to deliver myfirst prepared speech. I had to chug a glass of beer10 minutes before I delivered that icebreakerspeech. I was hospitalized for overdosing on valiumwhen I had to deliver my 4 th speech.Traumatized? Definitely. But not traumatizedenough to quit the program. Speech after speech Idelivered, and at the end of my second year, Icompleted my first communication recognition(CTM). Through the encouragement of othertoastmasters, I even competed and won the districtevaluation speech contest in 4 years time.It was at that time that the district asked me to giveback. I served as a district officer, and with eyes onthe goal, I served with all I can. Area Governor ofthe Year (1998), Division Governor of the Year (1999)and Toastmaster of the Year (2002) accolades aregreat photogenic sunrises in my life and the callfrom Jon Greiner caps off a testament on how toget things done:To LEAD and SERVEwith Passion and CommitmentThere are more sunrises in my life, but these twomoments that I captured gave me the greatestsatisfaction when I reminisce and taught me thebiggest lessons in my life:Know your goal.
