Recognizing concussion symptomsin children and young adultsby Alejandro Aponte, D.C., Faculty Clinician, Palmer Chiropractic ClinicsWhile most of thepopulation is aware ofconcussions, not all knowhow to recognize concussionsymptoms. As chiropractors, wecan often manage patients withconcussions and the associatedsymptoms.A concussion isconsidered a mild traumatic braininjury caused by an impact tothe head or neck, or a hit to thebody with enough force that thebrain can be affected. Due totheir developing brain, childrenare more susceptible to havingpersistent post-concussivesymptoms. Many of thesymptoms are difficult to detect.Symptoms of aconcussion include unequalpupil size (anisocoria), confusion,moodiness, irritability, gaps inmemory, poor concentration,behavior changes, difficulty fallingasleep, dizziness, abnormalbalance or gait, new persistentheadache especially whenaccompanied by sensitivity tolight, nausea, vomiting and lossof consciousness, though not allsymptoms needs to be present.Concussion symptoms can lastfor a couple of days, weeks,months or longer.It’s important to recognizethese symptoms and not allowan athlete to return to play untilcleared by their treating physicianand all symptoms from theconcussion are resolved. If anathlete returns to play beforethe brain has recovered, aconcussion can become a moreserious traumatic brain injuryand turn into a serious medicalemergency like “Second ImpactSyndrome,” which can result inpermanent damage to the brain,or even death. It’s important tonote that these conditions arerare, but they can happen. Earlydetection helps in the successfulmanagement of a patient withconcussion symptoms.At the Palmer ChiropracticClinics, our doctors of chiropracticcan help. After conducting athorough history and examination,depending on the severity of thesymptoms, we make referralsto the appropriate specialist oremergency department. Our goalis to help navigate the athleteand his/her family through therecovery process.We’re trained to examineconcussion symptoms, helpwith cognitive-training exercises,balance-training exercises andsport-specific exercises to helpathletes return to pre-concussionstatus. We help manage allthe other symptoms that canaccompany the concussion suchas neck pain, headaches, musclespasms and back pain. It’s alwaysrecommended that athleteshave a comprehensive sportsexamination before the start ofthe season to have a record ofthe athlete’s pre-concussivestatus.
