EditorialBiomedical and health sciences research hasalways been the centre of focus in manycountries for centuries. In fact, a portion of thetax-money has been allocated to research anddevelopment (R&D) in the country to improvethe health and well-being of the people. Theimportance of R&D can be seen with the recentpandemic of COVID-19, which has swept theworld with fear of the disease. Many parties areworking together to curb the outbreak; healthcareproviders nursing and treating the patients,scientists developing the virus detection systemand vaccines, engineers creating tools fortemperature detection and surface sanitisingmachine, and many more. All this expertise andcreativity come from years of experience andhard work in R&D to create a better future forthe nation and mankind.Universiti Putra Malaysia is committed to making meaningfulcontributions towards wealth creation, nation-building anduniversal human advancement through exploration anddissemination of knowledge. Malaysia One Health UniversityNetwork (MyOHUN) was established since 2012 to connectrelevant agencies, including universities and government,to fight against infectious and zoonotic diseases such asCOVID-19, dengue, malaria and leptospirosis. The R&D onLeptospirosis, ranging from fundamental to clinical studies,has been investigated extensively by the researchers inUPM. Besides, continuous technology development for thedetection of dengue virus is also ongoing to improve thespecificity and accuracy.Health and well-being of the nation has become a key nichearea of research in the university. Factors affecting thehealth of the community, particularly non-communicablediseases such as obesity and diabetes, are stealing theHospital Pengajar UPM(HPUPM), a teaching hospitalof UPM was recently establishedto serve as a multi-specialitycentre in pioneering researchand medical treatments.limelight. Not surprisingly, Malaysia has been crowned thefattest nation of the South-East Asia countries. Researchers in UPM also work on preventionand treatment for diseases such as the usage of SAWDA,a premium Herbatus Sauda oil that has enormous healthbenefits, and a new formulation of wound treatment fordiabetic patients. Hospital Pengajar UPM (HPUPM), ateaching hospital of UPM was recently established to serveas a multi-speciality centre in pioneering research andmedical treatments.Disseminating knowledge not only to the students but tothe general public is also one of the core values in UPMresearchers. Several books, such as educating the publicon how to manage patients who are on chemotherapyand educating university and college peers on HIV/AIDS prevention have been published. Researchers alsoconducted some programs such as Young Doctor Day toinspire school kids to be involved in health sciences in thefuture. In addition, occupational health and safety programwas also conducted to educate the public their rights whenit comes to health and safety at the workplace.Assoc.
