On behalf of the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center,
we want to thank all of the donors, supporters, educators, students,
schools, and community groups who are a part of our ‘family.’
Th ank you for caring about Holocaust and genocide education in the Pacifi c
Northwest, and for making the Center a priority in your charitable giving in
2009.
Because of your support, even during the most diffi cult of economic times,
the Holocaust Center continued to meet the needs of teachers in our region.
In 2009 our speakers spoke at 245 venues with audiences of 25,000. Our
teaching trunks crisscrossed the state and were used in 90 schools, reaching
7,000 students. 200 teachers were trained in statewide and local training
seminars. 1,800 educators receive our monthly e-newsletter.
With dwindling school budgets and larger class sizes, teachers are at the
forefront of witnessing the need for lessons of respect, tolerance and basic
human values. As the world moves toward more multicultural and ethnically
diverse populations, we owe it to the next generation to do all we can to help
them navigate this new reality. Teachers believe that by studying the Holocaust
and genocide, their students will be the ones to change the world. Our mission
is to help them do this with quality and accessible educational resources.
Standing together, we can make a diff erence in 2010.

Traveling Trunks Holocaust teaching trunks, borrowed by teachers, contain
materials including books, maps and posters, DVDs, and teacher
guides. Free for teachers within Washington State. This past year
90 schools used the trunks.

Traveling Exhibits Three traveling exhibits currently travel throughout our state.
e-Newsletter The monthly e-Newsletter includes upcoming programs,
educational resources, news and more.
Library The lending library includes memoirs, reference books, adult and
children’s books, teaching materials, DVDs and survivor testimonies.
Blog The blog provides information, current events and articles, teacher
resources and a forum for teachers and students to comment,
classroom ideas, student work, and more.
Classroom Sets of Books Each classroom set includes 35 copies of a particular title, a
teacher guide, and a related DVD.
Teacher Training The Holocaust Center organizes teacher training workshops
throughout the state and sponsors teachers to attend national
programs.

In�Memoriam:�Moses�Dinner�(1917�2009)�
Long�time�Holocaust�Center�supporter,�Moe�Dinner,�
passed�away�December�30,�2009�in�Seattle.�Mr.�Din�
ner�was�the�owner,�operator�of�Dinner�Klein�Printing�
and�Sudden�Printing�Company�and�was�a�captain�in�
the�army�during�WW�II.���
�
Mr.�Dinner�was�an�early�supporter�of�the�Holocaust�
Center�and�its�educational�mission.�Henry�Friedman�
recalls�that�Mr.�Dinner�was�“deeply�affected�by�his�
experiences�in�World�War�II.�He�always�wanted�to�
know�more�about�the�Holocaust�and�keep�up�with�
information�about�the�war.”��Dinner�donated�gener�
ously�to�the�Center.�We�will�miss�his�friendly�smile�
and�interesting�conversations.�

In�Memoriam:�Fred�Roer�(1920�2010)�
As�a�member�of�the�Center’s�Speakers�Bureau,�Mr.�
Roer�spoke�to�schools�through�the�state.��Born�in��
Kerpen,�Germany�Fred�experienced�Kristallnacht,��
survived�the�Lodz�ghetto,�Posen,�Auschwitz,��
Grossrosen,�and�Regensberg.��Mr.�Roer�survived�the�
death�marches�and�was�liberated�in�Lebanau.���
�
Mr.�Roer�immigrated�to�the�Unites�State�in�1950.��
When�he�was�no�longer�able�to�travel�to�schools,�Mr.�
Roer�still�welcomed�students�to�the�Summit�so�he�
could�continue�his�valuable�work.���
We�will�always�remember�his�dedication�to��
sharing�his�story.�

Anne�Frank’s�diary�is�read�by�students�throughout�the�world.��Anne’s�story�of�hiding�in�an�
attic�during�the�Holocaust�and�her�inspirational�words�have�brought�together�peoples�
from�all�over�the�world.�
�
In�her�diary,�Anne�writes�about�a�tree�growing�outside�her�window.�In�order�to�preserve�
the�legacy�of�the�aging�tree,�saplings�were�grown.��The�Holocaust�Center,�in�partnership�
with�Seattle�Parks�and�Recreation�applied�to�the�Anne�Frank�Center�USA�for�one�of�the�
saplings—and�Seattle�was�selected!�Only�11�places�in�the�United�States�will�receive��
saplings.�
�
Anne�Frank’s�diary�portrays�a�young�girl�who�had�hope,�courage�and�optimism��
in�the�face�of�incredible�adversity.��The�Anne�Frank�tree�sapling,�to�be�planted�in�Volun�
teer�Park�in�Seattle,�represents�our�hope�to�create�a�world�where�we��
respect�and�value�each�other’s�differences,�and�where�we�realize�the�power�of�what�can�
be�accomplished�when�we�come�together.��
