24 MEREDITH and DISTRICT NEWSMarg’sBook Review“The Snow Geese” by William FiennesWilliam Fiennes was inspired by the book, “The SnowGoose” by Paul Gallic which tells of an injured snowgoose carried across the Atlantic by a storm as it flewsouth to escape the Arctic winter. A man living alone inan abandoned lighthouse in Essex tends to the snowgoose.Snow geese spend their summers in the Canadian Arctic.Each Autumn they migrate south to California and theGulf of Mexico. In the Spring they fly north again.William Fiennes decided to go with them and to writeabout their travels.Fiennes was also desperate to get away from his homeand desperate for an adventure that would fill his time andinterests while he recuperated from a serious illness. Hehad been immersed in everything that was familiar to himand he was hungry for the new, for freedom, forunchartered country.What he produced was a blend of autobiography andreportage. The subject was always the migration of thegeese but he has included observations and insights aboutpeople he met and places he visited, meditations onphilosophy and especially the nature of homesickness andwhat he learnt about nature. It is also full of fascinatinginsights into the graceful and evocative birds.The book is also full of elegant prose. Throughout thebook Fiennes describes places, people, situations andbirds and their particular characteristics. “I lifted myselfup in my seat and looked back down the bus at peoplesleeping, the Greyhound a gallery in which diverseattitudes of repose were on display; heads tilted back,mouths agape, necks limp, cheeks on shoulders, couplesslumped together, all lit up when the Americruiser cruisedthrough concentrations of streetlights at the intersections,and all eyes closed but forthose of the two white beardedAmish elders, who lookedstraight back at me with theinscrutable, wild gaze ofprophets.” He describes sowell and in such detail thatyou feel you are in the placewith him.This is an absolutelybeautiful book. Fiennesevokes the joy of beingalive, of being on the moveand above all, of returninghome. His aim is to alsoreturn home to his preillnesslife.
