From the 14th to the 16th centuries, Gedi washome to a large Arab community. Excavations have uncovered a town builtentirely from plaster, earth and coral, surrounded by two walls. The richlived in the inner wall, and the outer wall included farm and plantationland with mud houses for the middle class. Peasants resided outside thewalls. The town was remarkable for its sophistication; houses containedadvanced drainage and plumbing, including flushing toilets. Alsouncovered were the Great Mosque, a fort, palaces, a well 50 meters deep,and tombs, one of which contains an inscription from 1399 in strikingArabic script. Deep in the forest is the palace where the King held courtand assisted women with marital problems. Chambers have been foundwhich have no windows or doors; access was through a secret door from theroof. It is believed that these vaults were used by noblemen to store theirgold and jewels. Evidence that the residents of the town traded withoutside cultures is clear from items found from all over the world, includingMing vases and Venetian glass.The town was abandoned in the early 16th century and covered by theforest. Theories abound as to the cause, from a plague to a sudden attackby tribesman from Somalia. Whatever the cause, the nobles had time toreact, as no gold or stones have ever been found in their secret vaults.JoLeeMagazine.com 41
