Can you think of two ways to get to the park? (Ex: drive, walk, ride your bike)
Just like there are different ways to go to the same place, there are different ways to think
about the same thing - some ways are helpful and some aren't. (You could talk about how
crawling to the park wouldn't be very helpful. It would take too long and hurt your hands and
knees - some thoughts hurt us and don't help us do what we want to do)
Do you think everybody has unhelpful thoughts sometimes?
Yes, everyone does - even really smart people!
What did the little boy in the book do when he had a thought that was being mean to
him? He told it to go away and put another better thought in its place.
Can you think of some good thoughts you could choose to help you when you are
having a 'bully thought' that doesn't want to go away?
Who is the nicest person you know? Do you think they ever have thoughts that aren't
nice? Everybody has thoughts that aren't nice sometimes - even the nicest people in the
world! Having 'bad' thoughts doesn't make us a bad person. It's what we do with our
thoughts that counts.
What are some of your favorite things to think about?
Well, hopefully that gives you some ideas to start with. I'm sure you can think of some more
on your own. I also encourage you to look online for some good tips on having better
conversations with kids about their feelings.
As you go through these questions with your child, I also encourage you to think of your own
thoughts and put these concepts into practice yourself. We all need to work on out thoughts!
