It’s me again…I’m beginning to realize how true the saying “best laid plans” is,especially in the era of a pandemic. In a matter of days in early April,schools, from elementary schools all the way up to colleges and universities,were sending students and teachers home to hunker downagainst the spread of COVID-19. Libraries, businesses, state governmentoffices, dental offices – they all were closed. Only essentialservices were expected and welcomed to stay open. Those, of course,included health care offices, but also early childhood services.For those allowed or encouraged to work from home, doing sowith youngsters needing care and attention was less than practical.For essential workers continuing to help us stay healthy, fed or safe,child care was a continued need.COVID-19 has reinforced our awareness of many importantthings. Cleaning and sanitation practices that early childhood professionalsare so accustom to, such as handwashing, became a nationalmantra! Child care providers know and understand the importanceof thorough handwashing, not only theirs but also the children intheir care. I have to tell you all, I snickered (just a little) when all ofthe videos started to come out showing good handwashing practiceand procedures for adults. Everyone in early childhood knows andpractices daily, even hourly, good handwashing as a means of keepingboth kids and their families healthy and safe.Some child care businesses decided to close, for a variety of reasons.Others stayed open, because they were caring for children offamilies that were expected and needed at work. Attendance wascertainly affected, and for many providers the pandemic has createda real financial burden.Fortunately, just in time, came the Child Care Provisions of CoronavirusAid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).We at Child Care Aware are extremely honored to have theprivilege to distribute almost 20 million to child care providers withfunding from the Department for Children and Families utilizingthese federal resources. The grants include:• Supply grants for open child care programs• Monthly sustainability grants for up to 6 months• Revenue replacement grants• Bonuses to providers who care for children ofhealthcare and emergency workers• A variety of supports for relatives of care providersThis is an amazing windfall for the early childhood field, but manyof my national colleagues wonder, is it enough to sustain this fragilesystem? If nothing else, we know it’s a great start!And now, here we are early June, and you might have been expectinga new person in this corner, as promised in April. COVID-19changed all that – just another example of “best laid plans!” My retirementis still just around the corner, and I can’t think of a betterway to leave this position than knowing the amazing impact thatChild Care Aware® of Kansas has made on the early childhood fieldwith the distribution of these relief funds.Stay healthy, go forth and do good!
