Hello, Kansas!Stepping into a snow globe in the summer.I like to think that I’m a reasonably adventurous spirit – up foranything, as long as I have a road map and a plan in place! Exploringthe opportunity to lead Child Care Aware of Kansas – and all of thechanges this brings both professionally and personally – has beentremendously exciting (and a little nerve-racking, if I’m being completelyhonest). Stepping into this new role means a move for myhusband and our two sons – a new community, new schools, and anew career path for me. Oh, and we’re doing all of this in the middleof a pandemic (for which road maps and plans are either nonexistentor completely impractical!).In short, my family and I are shaking up everything, all at once,and at a time when the world is also rapidly changing. It feels a littlelike standing in the middle of a snow globe – there’s a period ofunsettling, where life is tipped upside down and tossed side to side.Then comes a period of relative calm, where the snowflakes gentlydrift to the ground, landing in new places. In my experience, the newlandscape is often more magnificent than the old.In many ways, there’s no better time than this moment to undertakethis opportunity. Early childhood systems across the countryare standing in the middle of a snow globe, just as I am. We’ve hadto completely shake up things in order to quickly and effectively respondto changing health and safety concerns – all while still meetingthe needs of providers, children, and their families. We’ve accomplishedpolicy and practice changes in a matter of months that mighthave taken years prepandemic.While the initial wave of quick-response change might havepassed, we now find ourselves in a calmer space where reflection,thoughtfulness, and imagination can take root. We can considerwhat we’ve accomplished, and what remains to be done. We can reimaginean early childhood system that centers and prioritizes equitable,high-quality early care and education.I know I have enormous shoes to fill, and count myself lucky tostep into this position with the support of Leadell Ediger, a firstclassteam of seasoned professionals, and an outstanding Board ofDirectors. I’m excited to be a part of Child Care Aware of Kansasand the broader Kansas early childhood system, and I can’t wait tosee what we can accomplish together.KELLY DAVYDOVNEW Executive Director, Child Care Aware ® of KansasKelly Davydov joins Child Care Aware of Kansas as Executive Director. Kelly’s professional backgroundincludes leadership for two key initiatives in Iowa: a statewide early childhood system-building effort,Early Childhood Iowa, and the 2-Gen anti-poverty initiative. Kelly, her husband, Dmitry, and their twosons (Ethan, 12, and Henry, 10) are making Kansas City their new home. The family enjoys exploring stateand national parks, farmers markets, and spends their winter weekends pool side at swim meets.
