Baby boomersare more health-conscious thanthe generations that came beforethem. Nevertheless, they face significanthealth challenges. Hereare the top five:1. Type 2 DiabetesAccording to the CDC, thepopulation of adults withDiabetes has more thantripled in the last 20 years.Diabetes increases the riskof serious health problems,including high blood pressure,vision loss, kidneydisease, nerve damage, footproblems, amputation andcardiovascular disease. Lifestylechanges and propermedical care can managediabetes and its associatedrisks.2. Heart DiseaseHeart disease is the leadingcause of death for thoseover 60. After age 45, therisk of developing heart diseaseincreases significantly.Some risk factors (age orfamily history) are not inyour control, but lifestylechanges and medical interventioncan help you loweryour risk. Exercise, diet andtobacco-free living will helplimit your heart disease risk.3. CancerCancer affects everyoneat any time of life, but formost cancers, aging is themost important risk factoraccording to the CDC.Cancer screenings are crucialas we age, they are routinelyused to detect cancersat early stages, possibly beforeyou can feel symptoms.Cancer-related deaths aredeclining, and if you contractcancer, your chancesof surviving are now higherthan they were in the past.4. DepressionDepression can happen atany age, but often beginsin adulthood, according tothe National Institute ofMental Health. Depression,particularly in adults canco-occur with other medicalillness, including cancer,heart disease, diabetes andParkinson’s. Depressionoften causes the other conditionsto worsen. Dr. ReyzanShali of Scripps CoastalMedical Center Vista says,“It is important for bothphysicians and patients torecognize that depressionis not a normal process ofaging. Unfortunately, manypatients feel uncomfortablewith the subject of depression.Many feel that seekinghelp is a sign of weakness.It is very important for youto accept that you needhelp. Your primary carephysician is a great start forhelp.”5. Eye ProblemsGet your annual visionscreening. Over 20.5 millionAmericans are affectedby cataracts, this numbergrows every year. Advancementsin the safety and precisionof cataract surgeryresult in faster surgeries,shorter and easier recoveries,and improved vision.Many baby boomers feel thestress of being the sandwich generation,as well as the host ofmedical issues that come withaging.
