WPA NEWSLOOKING AT THE GLOBAL SITUATION,ONLY A MINORITY OF PEOPLE WITHMENTAL DISORDER RECEIVE ANYTREATMENT. THERE IS AN OUTSTANDINGNEED TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO HIGHQUALITY MENTAL HEALTH CARE INALL COUNTRIES AND TO SUPPORTPSYCHIATRISTS AND OTHER MENTALHEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THEIRIMPORTANT ROLES AS POLICY MAKERS,DIRECT SERVICE PROVIDERS, TRAINERSAND SUPPORTERS OF HEALTH CAREWORKERS IN PRIMARY AND COMMUNITYHEALTH CARE SYSTEMS.The key goals of the Action Plan are as follows:• To promote psychiatry as a medical specialtyin clinical, academic and research areas andto promote public mental health as a guidingprinciple.• To highlight the specific role of psychiatristsin working with other professionals in health,public health, legal and social aspects of care• To ensure WPA’s positive engagement withmember societies and WPA components,mental health professionals and general healthcare workersThe 2020-2023 Action Plan also looks at targetedareas that need attention with input from variousWPA components during the next triennium.IT WILL WORK WITHIN AN INTERNATIONALPERSPECTIVE FOCUSING SPECIFICALLYON IMPROVING COVERAGE OFINTERVENTIONS TO TREAT MENTALDISORDERS, PREVENT MENTAL DISORDERSAND TO PROMOTE MENTAL WELLBEINGINCLUDING THROUGH RELEVANT TRAININGOF MENTAL HEALTH AND OTHERPROFESSIONALS.This Action Plan will also build on the 2017-2020Action Plan to ensure continuity in the WPA’s work.The six areas of the WPA Action Plan 2020-23 include:• Public Mental Health: Population approach tomental health to sustainably reduce mentaldisorders and promote mental wellbeing byimproving coverage of effective interventionsto treat mental disorders, prevent associatedimpacts,• Child, Adolescent & Youth Mental Health:Improving coverage of public mental healthinterventions including for higher risk groupssuch as those with learning disability, Autism,Early onset of psychosis and refugees• Addressing co-morbidity in mental health:Training, capacity building and engagementwith other mental health professionals• Developing partnerships for joint collaborativework and strengthening partnerships withmental health and other organisations• Continuation and completion of previousAction PlansAll the areas covered in the Action Plan are of highpriority. However, due to time limitations and scarcityof resources, there will be greater focus on specificareas. The WPA has established working groups thathave started formulating plans and pilot projects indifferent areas of the plan and once the findingsof these pilot projects are available, we will sharethese reports and seek funding to implement theseideas in different settings and countries.I AM MINDFUL THAT THE RAPID SPREADOF COVID-19 AROUND THE WORLD ISFURTHER INCREASING RISK OF DEVELOPINGMENTAL DISORDERS, RELAPSE OF EXISTINGMENTAL DISORDERS AND POOR MENTALWELLBEING WHICH REQUIRES ACTION ATA POPULATION LEVEL.It is hoped that the 2020-23 will set new directionsfor all WPA components to develop guidelines anddirections for future work.
