This heap of refuse was removed with thehelp of the owner of Russell & Son Funeral DirectorsPicture: ANDISA BONANIWORKING TOGETHER: Tarkastad residents come together to clean up the area’s landfill site,while encouraging fellow residents to do the same in their residential areas Picture: SUPPLIEDResidents clean up dump sitesANDISA BONANITarkastad residents took itupon themselves to cleanthe town’s disorganisedlandfill site, which had rubbishlying all over the place andoften blown by the wind toother areas.The clean-up campaigns area new trend among residents invarious towns under EnochMgijima Local Municipality(EMLM), with The Rep recentlyreporting on one in Whittleseaand several others in Komani.The EMLM has also beenstruggling to regularly removerefuse in residential areas thisyear, and when prompted foranswers, “truck in for repairs” isthe go-to response.Tarkastad resident andbusinesswoman Lisa Kingorganised local farmers andtheir workers to help clean upthe dumpsite, and communityTarkastad and Komani people join to assist struggling EMLMmembers also contributedmoney for fuel for sponsoredtruck services.King said the landfill site wasa disaster waiting to happen,and that she had previouslyreported it on numerousoccasions to EMLM, but noaction was taken.“I therefore decided toorganise people who wereinterested in helping to clean upthe dumping site.“Local farmers and their staffcame on board with somepeople contributing money fordiesel; Komani-based Energosponsored with the services oftheir tipper truck and TLB.”Crickley Dairy sponsoredwater, and King’s coffee shop,which she owns with a friend,provided snacks for all involved.“With this clean-up I’d like toencourage all residents to do thesame in their different areasbecause we know themunicipality is struggling.“As time goes by, we plan toclean up in town as it is just asf i l t hy.“The municipality uses abakkie to pick up rubbish inresidential areas and sometimesit does not come.“People leave their rubbishbags outside waiting for therefuse truck and it ends up beingtorn by dogs, leaving a mess.”Meanwhile, in Komani, theopen field on Marigold Street atthe start of Victoria Park, andanother on Central Street next tothe Dumpy Adams SportsComplex are now clean thanksto community support.Victoria Park residents BasilBosch and his wife Memory gotassistance from local businessesto clean up the fields that hadturned into dumping sites.On Tuesday, heaps ofcollected litter was waiting to beremoved after the Bosch’s wereassisted by Shaun Russell ofRussell & Son Funeral Directorswith trucks to do the work.“My wife and I werefortunate to have beensponsored with the trucks; weinitially went to ask them howmuch it would cost to hire a TLBand a truck, which amounted toR3,000 each.“Upon Russell finding outthat we were doing the work forthe community, he decided tosponsor the TLB and its services,which we are grateful for. Mywife and I will pay for the truckto have the rubbish removed.”They also plan on cleaningan open field on Pelem Roadnear Zamaland Tavern andothers along the way.“We have small childrenliving among us who will growup in filthy neighbourhoodsthinking it is normal and okay.“We want them to know thatthey can live in a better andclean environment and thatevery individual is responsibleto clean their surroundings,”said Memory.EMLM spokespersonLonwabo Kowa said the fence atthe Tarkastad landfill site hadbeen stolen, and as such therefuse could not be contained.“The fence issue makes thesite difficult to manage. Plans tofence the dumping area are inprogress and a consultant hasstarted with preparations forclear-view fencing.“After the fencing iscomplete, trenches will beexcavated to enable wastemanagement.“The Ezibeleni landfill site iscurrently being fenced afterfunding was secured from theDevelopment Bank of SA. It hadalso been vandalised.“The refuse truck servicingTarkastad and Hofmeyr iscurrently in for repairs. As aninterim measure, the areas arebeing serviced by smallervehicles with no capacity tocover all areas. As soon as thetruck is repaired, the area’srefuse removal schedule willreturn to normality,” Kowa said.Festive season clean-upTIME TO ACTANDISA BONANIThe Emalahleni Local Municipalitykick-started its three-day clean-upprogramme and beautification ofits towns ahead of the festiveseason that is usually enjoyedoutdoors, on Wednesday.The cleaning campaign startedin Cacadu where mayorNtombizanele Koni led theinstitution’s executive committee,councillors and staff to pick upscattered litter around the town.The town was previouslyknown to be the “greenest” in theChris Hani district and itsbeautification was aimed to bringit to its former glory.“The clean-up campaign isaimed at promoting properhygiene and environmentalconservation by all people ofEmalahleni.
