Entwickelt wurde das EPEG Kabelsystem von einem Konsortium,
zu dem unter anderen die omanische Omantel, die russische
Rostelecom, TIC sowie Cable&Wireless Worldwide gehören. Ziel
der Entwicklung war die Bereitstellung einer verlässlichen
Hochgeschwindigkeitsverbindung zwischen dem Oman und
Frankfurt am Main. Nach der Fertigstellung wird das System eine
Anfangskapazität von 540 Gigabit/sec (Gbps) aufweisen, es ist
jedoch für Bandbreiten von bis zu 3,2 Terabit/sec (Tbps) ausgelegt.
Die kürzeste Übertragungsstrecke wird 9.430 km lang sein, die
maximale Latenz zwischen Frankfurt am Main und Barka im Oman
wird 91,97 ms betragen.

Developing the EPEG cable system is a consortium that
includes, Omani Omantel, Russian Rostelecom, TIC and
Cable&Wireless Worldwide. The system was specifically
designed to provide high-speed, reliable connectivity
solutions between Oman and Frankfurt, Germany. When
completed it will have an initial capacity of 540 Gbps with
design capacity up to 3.2 Tbps. The shortest route is 9,430
km with a round-trip latency between Frankfurt, Germany
and Barka, Oman measuring at 91.97 ms.
