Since its founding in 1831 in Tuscaloosa as the first public university in the state, The University of Alabama has

apply computer technology to research across the curriculum. The span of the University’s history and its trajectory
into the future are also embodied in the University Libraries, Museums, and Special Collections, 11 facilities in which
artifacts of the past and sophisticated information technology combine to provide resources for students, scholars, and
the public.
Offering degrees in over 75 majors, the University gives its more than 20,000 students a wide range of choices

Richard M. Myers
Commencement Speaker
Honorary Degree Recipient
Today’s speaker is world-renowned geneticist Dr. Richard M. Myers. He is professor
and chair of the Department of Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine
as well as the director of the Stanford Human Genome Center.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Dr. Myers received his bachelor of science in biochemistry
from The University of Alabama in 1977 and his doctor of philosophy in biochemistry
from the University of California at Berkeley in 1982. He did his postdoctoral work
at Harvard University and then began his first faculty position in 1986.
Myers’s research is in the areas of the Human Genome Project and human genetics—
areas of inquiry concerned with understanding our entire genetic blueprint and how variation in genes between
people leads to disease and resistance to disease. His laboratory was one of the major contributors to sequencing
the human genome, helping to produce the sequences of three of the human chromosomes. In their work
on diseases, Myers and his group have contributed to discoveries of genes that cause epilepsy, skin cancer,
and hemochromatosis. They currently work on Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder,
hypertension, and atherosclerosis. Dr. Myers is particularly interested in genes and the human brain.
Dr. Myers is heavily involved in science education, both in training the next generation of scientists and helping
to increase public understanding of the impact of scientific research on our everyday lives. He is a codirector of
a science education partnership between Stanford and the San Jose Tech Museum, which has more than 750,000
visitors each year. He speaks about genetics and gives frequent workshops and laboratory tours to young students
and adult groups.
Dr. Myers is a member of numerous national committees that are concerned with science policy and advocacy.
These include serving on several review groups for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of
Energy and serving as an editor on the monthly journal Genome Research. He is a member of the Scientific
Advisory Board for the new Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama.
He has received numerous awards including the Pritzker Foundation Award, the Darden Lecture Award from
The University of Alabama, and the Wills Foundation Award, and he was a Searle Scholar.
Dr. Myers is married to Wendy Yang of Dayton, Ohio, and they have a son Zachary, 5, and a daughter Susannah,
11. His extensive family, including his parents and five brothers and sisters, live either in Tuscaloosa or elsewhere
in the Southeast. His hobbies are woodworking, spending time with his family, and visiting Alabama every
chance he gets.

Beverly Clarkson Phifer
Honorary Degree Recipient
Today, the University is privileged to honor Beverly Clarkson Phifer, president and
chief executive officer of Phifer Wire Products. She will receive the doctor of humane
letters, honoris causa.
Based in Tuscaloosa, Phifer Wire Products is the world’s largest producer of aluminum
and fiberglass screen products. Under Ms. Phifer’s leadership, the company has
received the Presidential “C” Award—“We can, we care”— a presidential citation
for private sector initiatives; and the “E Star” Award from the U.S. Department of
Commerce for continuous improvement in export excellence.
Phifer, daughter of Alabama alumni the late J. Reese Phifer and the late Sue Clarkson Phifer, graduated from The
University of Alabama in 1970 with a bachelor of arts in economics.
She is a devoted alumna of the University and serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the UA Museums
Board of Regents, and the C&BA Board of Visitors.
As a trustee with the Reese Phifer Jr. Memorial Foundation, she has worked in establishing several scholarship
funds, endowed professorships, and fellowships at UA in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering,
Commerce and Business Administration, and Communication and Information Sciences; and the Schools of
Social Work and Law.
Ms. Phifer is active in several civic and community organizations including the Salvation Army Women’s
Auxiliary, Children’s Hands-On Museum, West Alabama Food Bank, and Christ Episcopal Church.

THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION
The processional signifies the beginning of the commencement ceremony. The Commencement Marshal
presides over the Academic Procession; leads the platform party to the stage; escorts the honorary degree
candidate and the special recognition recipients to the presidential podium for honorary degree conferral or
special recognition citation reading; and signifies the closing of the ceremony by leading the platform party
from the stage. The Commencement Marshal is the bearer of the ceremonial mace. As the processional
music begins, the procession led by the candidates, followed by faculty, then the platform party, will enter
the arena floor and go to their designated seating. The audience should rise once the processional music has
begun and remain until after the invocation.

The caps and gowns worn by graduates, faculty and platform party are based on the academic costumes
used in universities of the fourteenth or fifteenth centuries, particularly at Oxford and Cambridge. These
academic costumes, sometimes referred to as academic regalia, are based on the early European universities
costumes, and these have been used in the United States since colonial times. In 1895, American universities
responded to a growing problem of varying academic costumes by creating an Intercollegiate Code to establish
standardized academic costumes. Black is the most common color of academic gowns.
In the fall of 1999, a new doctoral gown was authorized for all University of Alabama students earning
a doctorate degree. Designed to distinguish University of Alabama doctoral degree graduates, this new doctoral
gown was introduced for the 21 st century. The new doctoral gowns were worn for the first time at the May
2000 ceremony.

The doctoral gown includes two crimson University of Alabama seals on the front panel of the gown, while
the traditional doctoral bars are piped with crimson. The new doctoral gowns place The University of Alabama
among a select group of universities who have their own doctoral gowns including Harvard, Yale, Stanford and
Princeton.
The members of The University of Alabama Board of Trustees wear doctoral gowns of charcoal gray trimmed
in black velvet. The Commencement Marshal wears a crimson doctoral gown trimmed in red velvet. Graduates may
be identified by the color of the tassel on the black mortar board which signifies the School or if they are receiving
an advanced degree, the color of the band on the hood, which signifies the field of study.

The University of Alabama awards degrees with honors to undergraduate students in all schools and colleges
who throughout their academic careers consistently achieved meritorious scholastic standing. These designations
are summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude. Summa cum laude is the highest academic distinction
awarded. Honor graduates are listed at the beginning of each college or school’s section of the program. These
graduates wear stoles in the traditional colors of their school or college. Silver cords indicate participation in the
University Honors Program. Royal blue and gold cords indicate participation in the International Honors Program.
Computer Based Honors is represented by the purple honor cord.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the audience will rise for the singing of the “Alma Mater” and the
recessional. The words to the “Alma Mater” are printed on the back cover of the program. The recessional is led
by the platform party, followed by the faculty and the candidates. Candidates should meet their family members
and guests at predetermined designated areas outside the stadium.
The University of Alabama conditionally confers degrees upon all candidates for the degrees of Educational Specialists
through undergraduate. Candidates for Doctor of Education, Doctor of Musical Arts, Doctor of Public Administration, and
Doctor of Philosophy degrees are actual degree recipients and will receive their diploma at the ceremony. Diplomas for all other
candidates who successfully meet degree requirements will be mailed to their permanent address of record upon the completion of
final grade submission and degree verification, approximately one month after the ceremony. Honors designations are calculated
on previous semesters grade point average. The honor announced, depending upon calculation of final grade point average, may
change or in some cases the degree candidate may not actually graduate with an honor designation.
Enhanced audience platform viewing is provided by the University of Alabama Athletic Department’s Jumbotron
and the Center for Public Television. Our sincere appreciation is extended to the Athletic Department for the use of this
technology and to the Center for Public Television for the production.
An interpreter for hearing impaired spectators will be stationed on the stage.
The First Aid Station is located in the southeast curve of the concourse.
Drinking fountains and restroom facilities are located on the upper concourse area of the Coliseum.

THE ALABAMA WIND ENSEMBLE
The Alabama Wind Ensemble, founded in 1985, is a select 80-member group of advanced wind and percussion players
dedicated to the performance of the finest concert wind music. The group has performed at national and regional
conventions of the College Band Directors National Association and the Music Educators National Conference seven
times and been invited twice to present concerts for the prestigious World Association for Symphonic Bands and
Ensembles international conferences. Highlights of the 2005-2006 season include the American premiere of Derek
Bourgeois’ A Cotswold Symphony and the world premiere of Nigel Clarke’s Paradise Lost. World-renowned soloists,
conductors, and composers who have appeared with the Ensemble include James Barnes, Roger Bobo, Brian Bowman,
Nigel Clark, Frederick Fennell, Frederick Hemke, Donald Hunsberger, Karel Husa, Alex Klein, Christian Lindberg,
Eugene Rousseau, Eric Ruske, Arturo Sandoval, Dale Underwood, and Allen Vizzutti. In the fall of 2005, the Wind
Ensemble’s first internationally distributed compact disc was issued when we appeared with euphonium soloist and UA
faculty member, Demondrae Thurman, on “SoliloQuies” (a Summitt CD). The Wind Ensemble has had long-standing
relationships with Studio Music (London), Hafabra Music (Belgium), and Southern Music (San Antonio) resulting in a
series of world and American premieres of important published works of James Barnes, Derek Bourgeois, Hardy Mertens,
Jan Van der Roost, Nigel Clarke, and others.
