Environmental Monitoring The Environmental Department implements rigorous environmental policies which govern all operations. Thorntons Recycling publishes Annual Environmental Reports and ongoing compliance reports which are submitted to the EPA and local authorities. All environmental compliance records and reports are available for public viewing and copies of licenses and permits are also available for inspection. New Investments Thorntons Recycling is committed to investing in both new and existing facilities. Kilmainhamwood Compost Thorntons Recycling recently invested €6 million to open Ireland’s largest fully enclosed composting facility in Co. Meath. Kilmainhamwood Compost, a purpose-built state of the art facility, will produce Class 1 compost for use in Ireland’s agriculture and horticulture sectors. Kilmainhamwood Compost has the most advanced technologies and environmental systems and will process 20,000 tonnes of biodegradable material annually. “Kilmainhamwood Compost is an important addition to Ireland’s recycling infrastructure and will play a key role in helping local authorities in the North East region achieve their recycling targets”, said Gary Brady, Managing Director, Thorntons Recycling. “As a country we need to identify alternative solutions to landfill and composting is an environmentally friendly solution”. Kilmainhamwood Compost is fully licensed by the EPA and the Department of Agriculture, employs 6 people directly and uses many services from the local area. Killeen Road Air Curtain Thorntons Recycling has invested in state of the art air curtain technology in another proactive approach to ensure the containment of all odourous air at their Killeen Road facility. The air curtain system was installed over the door area of the municipal solid waste building. The system produces a high velocity of air which creates a wall effect and further reduces the possibility of any odourous air escaping from the building. Air Curtain infrastructure. Processing Equipment In April 2007 Thorntons Recycling invested further in unique state of the art processing equipment for all skip waste entering the Killeen Road facility. This means that as much as possible of the metal, wood, stone and soil received is recovered with only the residual waste sent to landfill. This new equipment has boosted the recycling and recovery rates even further and the facility is now one of the leading recycling facilities in Ireland. Installation of the new processing line.
Students Travel from Base to Summit! Two lucky students from St John’s College Ballyfermot went on the trip of a lifetime to South Africa thanks to generous support from Thorntons Recycling. 14 years old Edward Madden and Martin Linehan from Ballyfermot travelled to Johannesburg to attend the fifth World Summit on Children and the Media which was attended by 1,000 adults and 300 child delegates from around the world. The young students have been attending The Base Media Group in Ballyfermot for over a year and developed a keen interest in media, each presenting a radio show on West Dublin Access Radio every other week. The Base is a Ballyfermot Youth Centre and Childcare facility which provides an activity-based resource for all children and young people in Ballyfermot. Thorntons Recycling were delighted to support local player Fergal O Brien at the Kilkenny Masters Snooker Tournament earlier this year. Fergal battled it out with sixteen of snookers finest players, including Stephen Hendry, Ken Doherty, Ronnie O Sullivan and World Champion Graham Dott, for the top prize of €20,000 in the ‘Eddie Bennett Developments Trophy’. Fergal reached the semi finals, beating Ken Doherty 5-0, but lost out in to Barry Hawkins who beat him 6-5. Dancing a Jig from Ballyfermot to Berlin! 42 students from the Doyle Halpin School of Irish Dancing recently danced their way to World Irish Dance Association European Dancing Championships in Berlin. The dancers aged between 3 and 22 years carried their dancing shoes, curlers and poodle socks in unique branded bags specially commissioned with sponsorship from Thorntons Recycling. The dancers returned home triumphant after winning eight titles in the prestigious Open category, a wonderful achievement for the school, almost doubling their success at last year’s event.
