IT STARTED WITH THE WATER, BUT THE PROGRESS KEEPS FLOWINGExcelsior Springs, the city with themagic waters, came to be as a moderndwelling in the year 1880. At the time,it was basically a wheat field. From theFishing River, a spring water with a redcoloring flowed, becoming Siloam Springand the first of the mineral waters foundin Excelsior Springs. It is the only naturalsupply of ferro-manganese mineral waterin the United States and one of only fiveknown worldwide. It’s also the spring thatpaved the way for Excelsior Springs tobecome what it is today.The story goes like this: A local farmer,Travis Mellion, was searching for helpfor his daughter who was suffering fromtuberculosis. Mellion gave his daughterwater from the spring to drink and bathein. Within days, a drastic improvementin her condition was observed; in justweeks, she was cured. People took notice.Another story of the healing properties ofthe water comes from Civil War VeteranFrederick Kuglar, who decided to test thewater on an unhealed gunshot wound. He,too, found relief and a full recovery fromthe waters.From there, the owners of the propertyplatted the valley and formed a town.Within a year’s time, 200 houses hadsettled into the hilly terrace for newcomersto call home. Visitors who had heard of themagic waters came in droves, campingin tents and covered wagons, to get theirhands on the waters.After the discovery of the first water,more than 40 more mineral water wellsand springs were identified, includingsodium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonateand saline sulphur. One of Excelsior’sclaims to fame is that we have moregroupings of mineral water than anywhereelse in the world. You read that correctly -in the entire world!Before long, visitors from largermetropolitan areas caught interest in thesprings. Suddenly, due to high demand,boarding houses and hotels were erectedand stage lines were put into place.Excelsior continued to thrive with furtherconstruction and expansion, even avoidingthe worst of the Great Depression thanksto our status as a health resort oasis.In the late 1950s, the good times tooka hit as some of the health benefits werequestioned and popularity of resort spatowns declined.Today, the springs still flow, althoughaccess to them has diminished. City andcommunity civic groups are currentlyworking to restore mineral water pavilionsat as many sites as possible.Our rich history helped make us whatwe are, but we are even more than ourwater. We have created a community withdeep roots in history and a huge passiontoward the future. We have two feetmoving forward while keeping an eye onour past.Our tourism industry is booming andnew businesses are opening up everyyear, including new breweries, restaurantsand retail space with more to come in thefuture.We pride ourselves on being a unique,charming town rich in history, culture andforward momentum.
