Earshot Jazz is a non-profit organization in service to jazz artists, students, and audiences in the Pacific Northwest. We’d love our web site to be as comprehensive a resource as possible for this vibrant Seattle jazz scene. Here are some thoughts we’ve had for improvements: Calendar listings downloadable into palm unit Interactive jazz calendar, so artists and venues can post their own gigs. On-line listings of individual jazz instructors. Used instrument referral Suggestion box/feed back form to Earshot Jazz Secure financial transactions for Earshot and other events “Clearing house” of Seattle jazz recordings with referrals for buyers Links to education institutions, radio, media, musicians, everyone possible Musician referral service/jam session postings Music publishing resources Listing of venues that book jazz, with contact information Advertising by jazz-related businesses Host list serve for musician communication Career pointers for musicians, by musicians (self marketing, etc.) Referrals to tax help, legal assistance, etc Year-long nominations for Golden Ear Award winners Posting of past Golden Ear Award winners. Hadley Caliman Farewell Performance April 12 Cornish College of the Arts will present legendary jazz saxophonist Hadley Caliman in a Farewell Tribute Concert on Saturday, April 12th at 8 pm in PONCHO Concert Hall. Caliman retires from Cornish College of the Arts, at the conclusion of this school year, after 20 years of dedicated service as a jazz educator in the Pacific Northwest. Caliman will be joined by Dawn Clement (piano), Chuck Deardorf (bass), and D’Vonne Lewis (drums). The program will include jazz and rhythm & blues standards, as well as original works. Hadley Caliman began playing the saxophone at age 16. He was an early disciple of Dexter Gordon, and took lessons from Gordon as a teenager. Caliman was the youngest member in Roy Porter’s seventeen piece band. Caliman has performed and recorded with such notable musicians as Freddy Hubbard, Earl Hines, Jon Hendricks, Eddie Henderson, and Bobby Hutcherson, Carlos Santana and many others. Caliman’s long career includes more than 100 recording sessions, working with artists ranging from Charles Brown to The Grateful Dead. His four albums as a leader, recorded for Mainstream and Catalyst in the ’70s, are collector’s items. Notably, Caliman appeared as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center in a tribute to Dexter Gordon, sitting in Dexter Gordon’s chair. Caliman has been on the faculty at Cornish College of the Arts since the ’80s and performs regularly in Seattle. EMP Pop Conference Explores Jazz/Rock relationship The second Pop Music Conference will take place at Experience Music Project April 10-13. This years conference theme is Skip a Beat: Rewriting the Story of Popular Music. The thoughtfully structured conference brings together academics, writers, and artists who will give around 100 presentations within topical panels. One panel that will address the jazz tradition specifically, will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 3:15. Moderated by music historian Theo Cateforis, Jazz vs. Rock will include three academics presenting papers. Presented in the Garden Court of the Seattle Asian Art Museum at Volunteer Park, the concerts are now free with museum admission. This collaboration with the Seattle Art Museum begins July 10 as part of the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the Volunteer Park building. Bernard Gendron is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He is the author of Between Montmartre and the Mudd Club: Popular Music and the Avant-Garde (Chicago, 2002) and Technology and the Human Condition (1976). His presentation is titles “Jazz on the Ropes: The Threat Of Rock ‘n’ Roll (1964-1967).” John Gennari is Assistant Professor of English and Ethnic Studies at the University of Vermont and author of the forthcoming book Canonizing Jazz: An American Art and Its Critics. His presentation is titled “What is Jazz? The Case of George Wein.” Kevin Fellezs is a doctoral candidate in the History of Consciousness Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is at work on a dissertation titled “Chameleon: Fusion and the Syncretic Aesthetic.” He holds a B.A. and an M.A. in music, with an emphasis on jazz studies, from San Francisco State University. His presentation is titled “Fused and Re-Fused.” Single day passes to the conference are $10.
