Chief Brooks thanks OfficerGrasso for pulling togetherthe data. We've seen some interestingtrends.Largely due to COVID, andconsistent with crime trends nationwide,we've seen significantdrops in break-ins. Housebreakshave been trending downwardthe past few years anyway, butacross the country many communitieshave also seen dropsin residential B&E's, presumablybecause people are homeand criminals seldom breakinto an occupied home. By thesame token, many communitieshave seen increases in commercialbreaks, presumably becausemore businesses are closed andthe buildings empty. We have notseen that here. For instance, shopliftingsare up, and we've also seena significant rise in fraud cases.Many of these fraud cases havebeen criminals exploiting theCOVID-related unemploymentsystem. So the rise in thefts andthe drop in breaks has given us afairly stable year in crimes againstproperty (+6%).As for crimes against persons,nationally offenses like sex assaultand robbery are down, while homicidesand non-fatal shootingsin major cities are through theroof. Fortunately, we don't havemany shootings (the New Year’sDay shooting at Windsor Gardensnotwithstanding). Consistentwith that, our crimes againstthe person are down (assault andbattery -29%, robberies downfrom 8 in 2019 to 5 in 2020).As everyone knows, we alsotrack drug overdoses. In 2019we had 20 overdoses with 2 ofthose fatal, and in 2020 we had28 also with 2 fatal. We're happyto answer any questions youmight have on our Facebookpage, NorwoodPolice.A Warning to Thieves: Stay out ofNorwood!For anyone who's interested,our latest "hot spot" is The HomeDepot, which has recently startedattracting people who want thosetools and building supplies butdon't want to pay for them. Someseem to just walk out with merchandise,some conceal it andhead for the door, some take fromseveral stores in a few day’s span,and a few steal off the shelvesand try to do returns. But here'sthe good news: WE CATCHNEARLY ALL OF THEM.That's right, looking at ourstats, over the past six weeks or so(as of Jan. 12), we've respondedto The Home Depot 14 times fortheft reports and have charged... wait for it ... 14 people - withtheft, receiving stolen property,etc. In a few cases, the propertywe've caught them with has beenstolen elsewhere, and in a few,stolen from other home improvementstores. We've recoveredthousands in stolen good duringthese arrests.To be honest, in a few of those14 cases we haven't caught anyone(yet - still under investigation)and in a few more we've arrestedmore than one subject. But hey,14 for 14 isn't bad!We want to be clear here;the folks at the Norwood HomeDepot, particularly their LossPrevention employees, have beenfantastic to deal with. This isn'ttheir fault and they've workedhard with us to resolve this issue.We've seen these kinds of crimetrends before, and this one won'tbe permanent, but for now we'redealing with this spree. So tothose trying to decide where togo thieving, stay out of Norwood!We're on a roll here.So if you're shopping at TheHome Depot and you see acouple of Norwood police officersstrolling the isles, they're nottrying to find that perfect paintcolor. They're doing what you'reused to seeing us do; using focusedfoot patrol to deter crimeand solve a problem. Feel free tostop them and say hello.2020 A Good Year in Fire SafetyFor the first time in recordedhistory, no children have died inhouse fires throughout the Commonwealthin 2020.This milestone has partiallybeen attributed to modern fireprevention laws and the StudentAwareness of Fire Education(SAFE) program.In Norwood, the SAFE programis run by Firefighter (FF)Paul Ronco who visits everygrade at every school in townthroughout the year. FF Paulteaches age appropriate basicsof fire safety, including kitchensafety, the importance of smokedetectors, and evacuation plans.We hope this is a new standardand Massachusetts never sees theloss of a child to fire again. Thisyear’s SAFE program has beenlimited by COVID but FirefighterPaul is looking forward togetting back into the schools andhopes all the students continue toremind their parents to test theirsmoke detectors and practicetheir evacuation plan.

In the undressedwinter season, it’s easier to seefeatures that may be hiddenwhen everything is green andlush. The “bones” of your property– its architectural features,interesting and imposing trees,rock outcroppings and the like –are totally exposed.Take advantage of a bright,sunny day and take a walkthrough your yard. Make a listof what is already there. Includebuildings and other structures(trellises, gates, fences, gardensculptures, iron accessories) treesand hardscape (driveways, walls,stairs, walkways). Note whichfeatures you like as well as thosethat you consider liabilities andwant to change.Also note areas that have distinctivefeatures such as steepslopes, berms, peaks, and particularlywet or dry areas. Lookfor potential hazards, such asa crumbling staircase, hangingtree limbs or tripping hazards.Note nuisance items too – likemarauding deer, street noise, anunattractive view, or a neighbor’stree that drops its leaves in youryard.Spend some time becomingfamiliar with the patterns of sunand shade at different times ofthe day. (This should be done inother seasons as well.) Note howdense the shade is in particularareas. If there is snow on theground, make note of the areaswhere the snow melts quicklyand where it lingers.As with sun and shade patterns,analyze typical wind speedsand direction at different times ofthe year. Wind settles and poolsin low-lying areas, just as it doeswith water. This can create frostpockets where the yard dips. Thedata will be invaluable in helpingto you decide where best to placetrees and plants to block wind orfunnel it.Once you have made yournotes outside, take a look at youryard from the inside – especiallythe windows with the most importantviews such as from thekitchen sink, the family roomor the bedrooms. Note how theview can be enhanced or improvedfrom each area. Is thereanything blocking the view?Would you rather be looking atsomething else? Do you haveenough privacy?Over the course of two tothree weeks, keep notes on thewildlife that visits your property.Are there gangs of squirrels frolickingabout? What type of birdsdoes your landscape attract? Doyou see deer tracks in the snow?Where do they lead?Finally, take photos from insideand out so you will have avisual record. No matter howgood your memory is, it’s seldomperfect.
