WFA Agila participates in
Football Fest
HAMILTON - WFA
Agila, Waikato Filipino
Association's football team,
participated for the first time
in the long-running New
Zealand Ethnic Football
Festival held in Hamilton
on 21-22 November at
Gower Park.
This was the first time
WFA put together a football
team to participate in the
19th NZ Ethnic Football
Festival, where 28 teams
coming from Hamilton,
Auckland, Wellington and
Christchurch representing
The WFA Agila team after their first win, with Jason Li.
various ethnicities and countries
competed.
Thanks to Jun Valencia,
who called on WFA's futsal
players at the Pistang
Pilipino held in Hamilton
Ambassador Gary Domingo with Captain Radge Avergonzado
last year and Jovi
Abellanosa, who invited
others from the community,
a team of 19 was organised
with members not only from
Hamilton but also from
Matamata, Te Awamutu,
Auckland, Rotorua and
Gisborne.
Having organised the
team and with only a few
weeks until the festival, the
next challenge was finding a
coach/mentor who could
make the members work
together as a team.
Through contacts in the
community
Jason Li was
identified, who
was willing to
come on board
and see how he
could help the
team in their
training sessions
and support
them during the
games.
When WFA
announced the
establishment of
WFA Agila,
Ambassador
Gary Domingo
was quick to
express his support.
He attended the festival,
cheered the team and
joined the parade. Whilst
they did not bring home
either the shield or the plate,
it was a good first competition
that saw friendships
made and certainly the
desire to keep the team and
participate in other tournaments.
