Dean Emeritus Donald E. Wilson EndowedScholarship RecipientKaéla Kuitchoua is a current first-yearstudent at the University of MarylandSchool of Medicine (SOM). Shegraduated from Emory University in2018, where completed a Bachelor ofScience degree in Neuroscience andBehavioral Biology. While at Emory,she conducted research at the YerkesNational Primate Research Centerstudying the neurodevelopmentaleffects of early life stress in a rhesusmonkey model.Prior to medical school, Ms. Kuitchoua spent two years working for theNIMH’s Clinical and Translational Neuroscience Branch through the NIHPostbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award Program. She usedneuroimaging and genetics to study patients with schizophrenia in order tobetter understand the hereditary traits of the illness. During her time at theNIH she also served as a Volunteer Coordinator for the NIH Academy, aprogram for NIH postbacs to learn more about health disparities inaddition to volunteering in the Washington DC community.Since coming to UMSOM, Ms. Kuitchoua has been volunteering withThread, an organization dedicated to providing resources to young peoplein Baltimore facing academic and social challenges. She has also joined theCombined Accelerated Program in Psychiatry (CAPP) elective track and is amember of the School of Medicine’s Second Look Day Committee.Ms. Kuitchoua was recently elected to be a Co-Vice President of UMSOM’sStudent National Medical Association chapter for the 2021-2022 academicyear. She is looking forward to the opportunity to supportunderrepresented minority students and continuing to work towardsserving underserved communities as a medical student and throughout hermedical career.
The Dean Emeritus Donald E. Wilson EndowedScholarship FundThe Dean Emeritus Donald E. Wilson Endowed Scholarship Fund wascreated by alumni, faculty, and friends of the University of Maryland Schoolof Medicine to honor the legacy of Dr. Wilson and continue the School’senduring commitment to enhancing the diversity of the School’s students andthe medical profession. The Fund facilitates the recruitment of a bright,diverse student body and helps ensure quality health care for all populations.It provides financial assistance to students at the School of Medicine.Dr. Wilson served as Dean of the School of Medicine from 1991 to 2006.During his tenure, he was nationally recognized by the Association ofAmerican Medical Colleges as a national leader and role model for increasingracial and ethnic diversity in academic medicine among physician leaders,faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Wilson was named Dean Emeritus upon hisretirement as Dean.In 2000, Dr. Wilson was the Inaugural recipient of the Herbert Nickensaward from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
