The district plansto expand testing to Burke-MemorialElementary and McGovernElementary in March. Onlystudents for which families haveconsented will be involved in thetesting initiative.The district has opted to jointhe state’s COVID-19 pooledtesting initiative, which fundsweekly COVID-19 testing foreach participating individualwithin the district for six weeks.Participating districts are pairedwith a vendor who assists withtesting logistics and provides thedistrict access to materials, technologyand lab space. If a pooledtest result is negative, then allindividual samples within thatpool are presumed negative. Ifa pooled test result is positive, atleast one individual in the pool ispositive for COVID-19 and eachindividual in the pool is given anindividual rapid test to identifythe positive sample(s).At Medway Middle andHigh Schools, the pooled testingprocess involves identified staffmembers who visit classroomson the designated testing dayseach week to gather the participatingstudents. Students thenself-administer the nasal swabtest under the direction of staffmembers. Participating studentswill now be tested once per weekbased on their assigned cohort.“We are very excited to bestarting with this initiative in ourmiddle and high schools,” SuperintendentPires said. “Weeklytesting will allow us to better understandthe prevalence of thevirus in the school communityand potentially identify asymptomaticor pre-symptomaticcases. This presentationand discussion featured renowned Victoria Alexander,a diversity educator, and critical race scholar.Alexander led a discussion for allies of BIPOC,answering such questions as, “How can I help?” and“What can I do as a non-BIPOC person?”More about Victoria Alexander: Alexander conductscritical research challenging myths regardingthe distribution of power and the role of racism andanti-racism in social, professional, and educationalspaces.
